Not only are the seniors leaving for new schools, but also the underclass- men are leaving for a new school. In this period of transition, there is a large amount of activity. Therefore, there are many events to be remembered. We hope that the 1965 MILESTONES will aid everyone in re- taining these me- mories. 6 Our Thanks for a Job Well Done In the years he has been with us at Kings Mountain High School, Mr. Bates has given generously of his time and efforts for the betterment of the school as a Whole. In posting two undefeated football seasons, one of them with ten straight Wins, he helped maintain both high school spirit and a high degree of good sportsmanship. To show our appreciation for his untiring efforts as a teacher and a coach, We respectfully dedicate the 1965 MILESTONES to Mr. Bill G. Bates. Mrs. Bates, seated beside Beth, holds Becky. 7 dministration To Teach is to faff f M ' glqwff., K f ,. Share One's Knowledge The Board of Education Is Concerned with Man Matters The Kings Mountain Board of Education members are state officials elected by the people of the Kings Mountain School District. Functioning as a team, their main responsibility is to give the local young people the best possible education with the available funds. Their diverse duties include approval of the budget, election of the teach- ers, and the assignment of the pupils to their schools. They must make cer- tain that the school system is operated according to the school laws. They work closely for the common good with other government officials in CAGO. They remain in close contact with the public, as in the case of the Stadium Committee. At the present their paramount concerns are the use of the state bond money, the new stadium, and the new high school. S E. ly 3 Board members view a drawing of the new stadium. Mr. Holmes Harryg Mr. H. O. Williams, vice chair Left to right, Mrs. Lena McGillg Mr. George Mauneyg mang and Mr. James Herndon, chairman. The Superintendent Heads the Administration of the School System The superintendent is the commander- in-chief of the Kings Mountain School District administration. Although he has no vote as the secretary, he advises the Board of Education and follows their dic- tates regarding school policy. He Works with the principals to insure smooth management of each school. He handles the official correspondence for the school district, interviews prospec- tive employees, sees that the buildings are kept in good repair, makes out the budget, and informs the public of import- ant school matters. Indeed, he is the most important man in a system that deals with the commu- nity's most valuable asset-its youth. Mr. B. N. Barnes, Superintendent, looks through his files bnmm' The Supervisor Works Closely with the Teachers Miss Alice Averitt, Supervisor, leafs through a new book. Efficient Secretaries Aid the Administration, Faculty, and Students h tine 'I 'Q V .X I Principal Looks Forward to thc New School Four long years-four years of tri- umphs and defeats, four years of a new school district and consolidation. You have lived through it all and have played a vital role in an unusually suc- cessful story. Your cooperative attitude has helped us endure adverse physical conditions in the light of phenomenal growth in educational development. A beautiful sight to behold has been the blending of three communities of young people into a far reaching educa- tional force. The unselfishness and hard work of the faculty and students have made this task easier. Our community is not the only consolidated community, but it certainly ranks near the top in cogent arguments for unity and esprit de corps. Much ground work has been laid in pre- paration for our move to the new high school next year. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will experience a new land- mark in this unusual occurrence. I trust you will cooperate to the fullest degree in helping to develop sound procedures that we may use for years to come. Seniors have led the spirit of Kings Mountain High School to its present fe- verish pitch. Your benignant acts have made school days for all more pleasant and you often have hidden your disap- pointments, signifying a fine quality of leadership. You will face many more chal- lenging conditions next year in college and in the work-a-day world. Your class has been a class of destiny-so continue to meet your numerous challenges face to face and let education be your soaring cynosure. -Harry E. Jaynes, Principal Our Facult Our faculty has guided us, prepared us, and showed us new horizons during our most formative years. Its members have introduced us to new worlds ranging from the beauty of great literature to the practicality of home economics. They have given each of us a firm basis either for our employment after graduation or for the furtherance of our education. Their wise counsel and aid have been frequently bestowed upon all of us. To our teachers, we extend our deepest gratitude for their interest, dedi- cation, and service. li ' fan. Mr. J. Fred Withers Miss Sybile Wilson Mrs. Eddys Ware Mr. James Teague A. This year, for the first time, the editorial staff is headed by two co-editors, rather than by a single editor-in-chief. The co-editors chose ten very capable people to form the staff. The net result of their work is MILE- STONES '65. Staff members Jim Pressley, Richard Franks, Debbie Smith, Rita Caveny, Linda Fitch, and Diana Bunkowski await assignments. 90 Co-editor John Caveny prepares pages for submission to Delmar. mwah Co-editor Jan Williams reviews last year's best seller. Pete Hauser and Speedy Ramsey prepare pictures for use. 91 Photographer Tommy Plonk starts on a field trip. Business Staff Supplies Funds . Business manager Neil McCarter works on his financial statement. In August, 1964, the business staff was called to a meeting at the school to discuss the forthcoming edition of the 1965 MILESTONES. Some of you might ask what the business staff of the annual does that is so important as to start in the late days of August. At the time, the members of the staff receive instructions concerning the sale of ads for the advertise- ment section of the annual. The sale of the subscriptions to these ads comprise most of the revenue to publish the yearbook. Other sources of income are the proceeds from a sock hop, the concessions stand at the bas- ketball games, and student subscriptions to the annual. These means of acquiring revenue are the backbone of financial backing for publication for the MILESTONES. The members of the business staff are to be congratulated for the time and efforts that they contributed to make the annual available to the students. Because of their work, the students have a pictorial review of this year in high school. The members of the business staff hope that you will have many hours of enjoyment as you look through this annual in future years. 92 l Yin? Goforth, Ramsey, Suber, Mullinax, The 1964 football season for the Kings Mountain Mountaineers was truly one of triumph. The Mountaineers proved them- selves to be even better than last year's team, co-champions of the Southwestern Confer- ence. This year Kings Mountain claimed sole possession of first place in the SWC with a perfect 10-0 record. The first game for the Mountaineer squad was against the Blue Devils of Stanley. The winning of this game proved to be no hard task for the Mountaineers as they trampled Stanley 38-6. The Mountaineers were equally impres- sive the next week. Local fans saw them roar to a 33-6 victory over Cherryville's Ironmen. The gridiron stars of Coach Bill Bates put on a fine exhibition of offensive and defensive power. 6 Mountics C The following Friday, the undefeated Mountaineers again hoisted the victory flag as they ripped the Trojans of Chase High 32-13. By racking up a score in every quarter, the Mountaineers upped their winning streak to three victories. The Mountaineers did it again against their next opponents, East Rutherford. The red hot Mounties routed the strong East Ruther- ford team 21-0 to remain on top in the SW 3-A Conference. Bessemer City was the next unfortunate team to fall to the mighty Mountaineers. Bes- against the Mounties, to be 28-6. the agenda, was des- semer scored only once leaving the final score Mooresville, next on tined to be a difficult ties again were victorious with a score of 13-6 for the first real test of the season. 5 game. Cloninger, C. n Undefeated The next week thousands turned out to see the annual battle between the Shelby Lions and the Mountaineers. The Moun- taineers proved themselves to be expert lion tamers, as they downed Shelby 19-7. The 1964 Kings Mountain Homecoming game held Mountaineer fans on the edge of their seats as a fired-up Rutherford-Spindale Central eleven waged war on the Mounties for the lead in the Southwest Conference. However the aggressive Hilltoppers were successfully beaten off 21-20, in a really close battle. Belmont was the next to suffer at the hands of the Mountaineers. The 35-13 score left Bel- mont still looking for its first win over Kings Mountain. Bridges, Weisner, E. Bridges, Philip Putnam, F. Wright, Gaffney, Anderson. The game with Lincolnton was one of the most important of the season. The results of this bout between the Wolves and the Moun- taineers named the champion of the SWC. As the Mountaineer fans watched the game, their team secured the SWC crown with a 24-6 victory over the Wolves. The 1964 regular season for the Moun- taineers ended as the first perfect season for Kings Mountain since the 1920's. The Mountaineers played the first game in the Conference play-off against Hickory, the Northwest division champions. The Mounties met with their first disappointment of the season when the game ended with Hickory as the victors. The 6-0 score ended the no-loss streak of the Mountaineers for this season.
