M. High — what special magic your name evokes both to uncertain freshman of faltering step and knowledgeable senior alike. What mysterious web ensnares us in the four years we tread your stairs, move through your halls, and sit in your classrooms? We enter your doors as freshmen of various sizes, shapes, talents, and personalities. When we emerge four years later, we are still different; but there is a golden thread that binds us to you and to each other. For want of a better name, we call it “school spirit”, but it goes far beyond that. It is a special blending of knowledge with dreams, youth with ex- perience, and fact with fancy. There is a gleam in our eye and a belief in our heart that our school is a good place — a place for emerging, developing, seeking, and finding. Could we but package these ingredients, the world would beat a path to our door. Come with us into fantasy and let us tell you what we think the magic recipe might be . . . Take One Student And Add A Cup Of Inspiration John R. Lutz You’re Special To Us Because . At the commencement of our high school career, you, Mr. Lutz, impressed us most. Your overwhel- ming knowledge awed us; but the interest you displayed in your subject and in us, your stu- dents, made us feel at ease. Your example taught us that knowledge cannot be acquired un- less we dedicate ourselves to finding it. In grati- tude for your unselfish concern for the students of Kings Mountain High School, we dedicate to you this 1964 edition of MILESTONES. The Audio-Visual work proves to be a full-time job. Mrs. Lutz with John Jr. and Juanita. An active Jaycee, Mr. Lutz helps to sell Christmas trees. ACADEMIC Separate Doubt From Knowing; Cream Together With a Goodly Portion Of Faith and Patience Administration Mr. Otto Williams, Mr. George Mauney, Mr. James Herndon, Chairman, Mrs. J. L. McGill. Mr. Holmes Harry not present. Kings Mountain Board of Education Elected by the people of the Kings Moun- tain School District, the five members of the Kings Mountain Board of Education repre- sent the “policy-making” branch of our edu- cational system. With our school population increasing each year the problem of space for all our students has been one requiring time and thoughtful study to solve. Through the efforts of this group final plans are being state approved for the erec- tion of a high school plant to adequately house a student body of almost a thousand students. To you community-minded men and wo- men the MILESTONES staff would like to express its sincere gratitude and apprecia- tion for the giving of your time, your talent, and your wholehearted interest. 10 Miss Alice Averitt, A.B., Atlantic Christian; M.A., George Peabody. Keeps “Pulse of School” Normal As Supervisor for the Kings Mountain school system, Miss Averitt has the responsi- bility for co-ordination of the basic educa- tional programs which are accomplished by the teachers. Her expert guidance has helped both students and teachers solve the prob- lems of education which they meet every day. She also provides films and teaching aids so that students may have the advantages of more progressive knowledge. In the years that Miss Averitt has been associated with our schools, she has proved her worth as an able administrator and un- derstanding person. Miss Averitt encourages use of audio-visual aids by teachers. Mr. B. N. Barnes, Superintendent Kings Mountain City Schools. Superintendent Gives “Whole Self’ to Job The Kings Mountain High School has an interesting history. In 1786 Captain W. T. R. Bell, a Confederate officer, opened a private boarding school in Kings Mountain. Soon, a two-story building was erected on the site of the present Kings Mountain High School and a military feature added. Students from South Carolina and other states as well as from North Carolina attended this school. In 1878 the school was changed from the Kings Mountain Military School to the public high school of Kings Mountain. Through the support and cooperation given by patrons, teachers, and students, this school made splendid progress through the years and has given us a rich educational heritage. We are happy to see our patrons, teachers, and students continue to give this school wholehearted support. A school continues to be good, not just because it has a commend- able history — it continues to be good through design, careful planning, and cooperative sup- port. With the spirit of cooperation existing at the present time in our school district and especially in our High School Student Body we look forward to the future with confid- ence. 12 Mrs. Becky Seism brings a sunny disposition to new position. Mrs. Wanza Davis, Secretary to the Superintendent performs efficiently in all phases of her work. Capable Staff Assists Mr. Barnes Mr. Barnes prepares for a new year. Miss Martha Houser, Secretary, adds warmth and humor to the principal’s office. Progressive Principal Creates Scholastic Climate This school year serves as a vivid reminder that three major areas of life directly affect you as students. These three areas are a part of our New Day in education in North Caro- lina. The first area centers on public interest in formal education. We have been able to determine that student interest in achieve- ment is tremendous. By parental influence and personal desire your accomplishments far exceed those of students a decade ago. Most of you are preparing well for the space age and this particular year rates superior. The second area reflects a constructive at- mosphere for human relations. We find that you are most anxious to respect the rights of others and that you reflect an acumen of the basic problems involved. The moral force ex- emplified here is most encouraging. Always remember that your faith in the Supreme Being must have more depth than an inveter- ate worshipper of religious custom. The third area tells of a compeling desire to keep the ideals of your country strong and free from totalitarianism. Threats from num- erous sources confronted us this year and we have realized that rights of free men are earn- ed through great sacrifices. I trust that you will let the three ideas of (1) Strong faith in God (2) Excellent formal education (3) Keen human understanding of individuals and nations constructively in- fluence you throughout life. Let this annual help you remember that Kings Mountain High School was a vital part of your preparation for success in these endeavors. Mr. Harry E. Jaynes, Principal Mrs. Helen B. Ausley B. Their work of soliciting advertisements (the principal source of pub- lishing this annual) was begun during the summer months. Proceeds from a sock hop, the concession stand at basketball games, the student supply store; and subscriptions also aided in financing the 1964 edition. The members of the business staff are to be congratulated for giving so freely of their many hours to make this annual available to you, the students. Through them, you have a pictorial review of your high school year, 1963-64, to give you many hours of enjoy- ment in the future. The responsibility placed upon them is great and they are to be praised for their excellence. P 1 I ' Our efficient office aides are indispensable to the principal, the guidance counselor, and the faculty. Acting as the “eyes and ears” of the school, they perform a variety of services during the hour which they devote to this voluntary work. Mastered in the basic rudiments of the gridiron sport, our last year’s products of reconstruction set their sights toward vic- tory and the SWC crown. This was our year of attainment, the result of hard work and enthusiasm put forth by the Mountaineers. The team we had waited so eagerly for had now materialized, and with confidence unex- celled, the Mountaineers began a football season never to be forgotten. If nervousness is any indication of an open- ing night, the Mountaineers did not show it as they chalked up their first conference vic- tory by romping over the Ironmen of Cherry- ville, 18-0. Success was attributed to fine ac- tion on offense. Stanley was next to fall victim to the K. M. Gridders. The entire line played excellent football offense and defense. The Stanley Blue Devils were smothered 28-6 by the Mounties. The Mounties continued their winning streak at Chase. A final score of 36-6 proved the better team, as K. M. came out on top with ease once again. East Rutherfordton, next on the agenda, was destined not to be an easy game. But the K. M. gridders not only had confidence but also skill. Tedious practicing proved benefi- cial to K. M. as the Mountaineers ripped East with a score of 26-8. I ter, Fred Dixon, Rodney Smith, Louis Cook, Gerald : Carrigan, and Steve Grigg. Fourth row: Peter Hauser, Jim Wells, Jay Powell, Charles Ramsey, Pat Hord, Hubert McGinnis, Richard White, Robby Suber, Ken Bolin, Lyn Cheshire, Fred Wright, Dale Putnam, I George Plonk, and Jimmy Owens. Coaches Don Parker, Bill Bates, Head, and Bill Cashion plot strategy. The Mountaineers, SWC Co -Champs Homecoming highlighted the next game as the Mountaineers butted heads with Besse- mer City. A large crowd not only viewed fine homecoming activities, but also a well-played game by the victorious Mountaineers. The final score was 45-7. The conference crown loomed ahead as, for the first time in years, it came within our grasp. Shelby was perhaps our leading contender for the SWC title. Thousands turned out to see the annual battle between the Mounties and the Golden Lions, in one of the most thrill- packed games ever played for a high school championship. Both teams were undefeated, and the tension mounted heavily on both sides. At the end of the fourth quarter the score was 7-7, a deadlock which meant sharing the conference crown, if both teams went on un- defeated. All participating K. M. gridders played a very fine game worthy of praise. The following week an inspired K. M. foot- ball team downed a highly regarded Moores- ville eleven 14-0. The K. M. defense held Mooresville to a total of 136 yards, while the Mountie offense rolled up 290 yards in rush- ing and passing. The victim of the next K. M. attack was R. S. Central. The final score was 6-0. Belmont was next to fall to the mighty Mounties. The final score of this non-con- ference game was 20-0. Lincolnton, our final game, was one of the most important. It determined whether K. M. shared the SWC title with Shelby. A 14-7 victory by the Mounties secured our position as SWC co-champs. This year K. M. shared the crown — next year we may be the conference champ, bar none.
