It is the chief purpose of the Science Department to follow o planned and co- ordinated curriculum. By so doing it will enable the student to learn the principles and laws of nature and then apply them to situations met by every day living. This is accomplished by lectures, classroom dem- onstrations, projects, and actual laboratory experience. Problem solving increases in difficulty from ninth grade General Science to Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A thor- ough understanding of mathematics is a basic requirement for advanced science courses. Mr. John Lutz, A.B., Lenoir Rhyne; General Science; Freshman Advisor; Science Club Miss Odessa Black, B.S., O. C.; Biology; Sophomore Ad- visor; Speech Contestants SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Mrs. Helen Ausley, B.S., Mississippi; M.S., Yale; Chem- istry, Physics; Junior Advisor; Junior-Senior Banquet 13

We of the Mathematical Department have two objectives: (1) mathematical competence for every person who attends Kings Mountain High School, and (2) advanced mathematical knowledge for those who go on to further study. Mr. Fenton L. Larson, M.A., U, N. C.; General Math, Eng- lish 1; Freshman Advisor; Debating Club Our general mathematics course is pre- pared for those who have only the first ob- jective. Algebra and geometry are designed to meet both objectives for those who wish college study, particularly further study in mathematics, and the physical sciences. We hope to send to college students who have learned to handle accurately mathe- matical manipulations and to reason log- ically in order to carry on independent study. Mr. Walter F. Powell, A.B., U. N. C.; Algebra man Advisor; Key Club MATH DEPARTMENT 1; Fresh- 12 Miss Kittie Lou Sutton, B.S., T. P. I.; M.A., Peabody; Algebra II, Plane Geometry, Solid Geometry; Junior Ad- visor; Future Teachers Club

BUSINESS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The Commercial Department endeavors to train students in usable skills and work habits in the field of typewriting, bookkeeping, and shorthand. The theory of these courses is introduced to the student in the classrooms through lec- ture, visual aids, and practice. When these fundamental skills are devel- oped, extensive practice work is provided in the various departments of the school and in the development of community projects. The major objective is to prepare students for of- fice positions or to provide a good foundation for specialized study in this field.
