FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The study of foreign languages makes a material contribution to any student in that it helps create a better understand- ing of other peoples through a knowledge of and an appreciation for their language and a respect for their civilization and culture. At the same time the student develops a more effective use of his native language through an increased vocabu- lary, clearer ideas of sentence structure, and greater accuracy in diction. Mrs. Laura Gentry, A.B., Limestone; M.A., Duke; Lotin, French; Senior Advisor; French and Latin Clubs THE LIBRARY The library is a service center of the school, established for a two-fold purpose; first, supplying materials to make the cur- riculum more interesting and more valu- able for pupils and teachers; and second, making available books and periodicals to give enjoyment, as well as information, to those who read for pleasure. In a sense it is the heart of the school. Mrs. Josephine E. Weir, A.B., Winthrop; M.A., Columbia; Library; Notional Honor Society; Library Club; Senior Advisor

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT We in the English Department regard the study of English as a challenging opportunity to boys and girls to become persons of culture and character whose mastery of the language provides them with resources of pleasure and stimulation to intellectual activity. Our aim is to teach English as a useful tool. Instead of presenting grammar for gram- mar ' s sake, we endeavor to stress the useful applications of the basic rules. Our goal is such mastery of the fundamentals of speak- ing, reading, and writing as will make the pupil acceptable socially and efficient ' voca- tionally. In order that the pupil may acquire such mastery of language, we subscribe to the educational precept that training in language is training in logical thinking. Miss Helen Logan, A.B., U. N. C.; English IV; Senior Advisor; Vocational-Guidance Club Mrs. Sue H. Moss, A.B., Meredith; English III; Junior Advisor; Statix ' n Dramatix Club Mr. Carl O. MeWhirter, A.B., Limestone; English II; Junior Advisor; Speech Club Mrs. Betty Bates, B.A., Lenoir Rhyne; English I, Journal- ism; Freshman Advisor; Cheerleaders; Mountaineer 10

We of the Mathematical Department have two objectives: (1) mathematical competence for every person who attends Kings Mountain High School, and (2) advanced mathematical knowledge for those who go on to further study. Mr. Fenton L. Larson, M.A., U, N. C.; General Math, Eng- lish 1; Freshman Advisor; Debating Club Our general mathematics course is pre- pared for those who have only the first ob- jective. Algebra and geometry are designed to meet both objectives for those who wish college study, particularly further study in mathematics, and the physical sciences. We hope to send to college students who have learned to handle accurately mathe- matical manipulations and to reason log- ically in order to carry on independent study. Mr. Walter F. Powell, A.B., U.
