In the distance the lofty mountains slowly rise to majestic grandeur providing a back- drop of unmatched beauty for the ac- tivities of work and play enjoyed by us who proudly harken to the call of Mountaineer. Amid this splendor we find all too soon that our strivings for knowledge have become just a memory and four short years have receded into the past. Towering over us somewhat in the fashion of our neighboring peaks is the ever present challenge of education. Like a broad avenue that leads into the future our educational road leads up- ward culminating the joys of friend- ship, athletics, studies, and other ac- tivities into one shining pinnacle. Seek- ing for truth we climb the sparkling stairs that bring our footsteps closer to our various goals. May the scenes contained herein serve as a mirror to reflect the many pleasant hours spent within and around our school. Our aim is to teach English as a useful tool. Instead of presenting grammar for gram- mar ' s sake, we endeavor to stress the useful applications of the basic rules. Our goal is such mastery of the fundamentals of speak- ing, reading, and writing as will make the pupil acceptable socially and efficient ' voca- tionally. In order that the pupil may acquire such mastery of language, we subscribe to the educational precept that training in language is training in logical thinking. Miss Helen Logan, A.B., U. N. C.; English IV; Senior Advisor; Vocational-Guidance Club Mrs. Sue H. Moss, A.B., Meredith; English III; Junior Advisor; Statix ' n Dramatix Club Mr. Carl O. MeWhirter, A.B., Limestone; English II; Junior Advisor; Speech Club Mrs. Betty Bates, B.A., Lenoir Rhyne; English I, Journal- ism; Freshman Advisor; Cheerleaders; Mountaineer 10 FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The study of foreign languages makes a material contribution to any student in that it helps create a better understand- ing of other peoples through a knowledge of and an appreciation for their language and a respect for their civilization and culture. At the same time the student develops a more effective use of his native language through an increased vocabu- lary, clearer ideas of sentence structure, and greater accuracy in diction. Mrs. Laura Gentry, A.B., Limestone; M.A., Duke; Lotin, French; Senior Advisor; French and Latin Clubs THE LIBRARY The library is a service center of the school, established for a two-fold purpose; first, supplying materials to make the cur- riculum more interesting and more valu- able for pupils and teachers; and second, making available books and periodicals to give enjoyment, as well as information, to those who read for pleasure. In a sense it is the heart of the school. Mrs. Josephine E. Weir, A.B., Winthrop; M.A., Columbia; Library; Notional Honor Society; Library Club; Senior Advisor We of the Mathematical Department have two objectives: (1) mathematical competence for every person who attends Kings Mountain High School, and (2) advanced mathematical knowledge for those who go on to further study. Mr. Fenton L. Larson, M.A., U, N. C.; General Math, Eng- lish 1; Freshman Advisor; Debating Club Our general mathematics course is pre- pared for those who have only the first ob- jective. Algebra and geometry are designed to meet both objectives for those who wish college study, particularly further study in mathematics, and the physical sciences. We hope to send to college students who have learned to handle accurately mathe- matical manipulations and to reason log- ically in order to carry on independent study. Mr. Walter F. Powell, A.B., U. N. C.; Algebra man Advisor; Key Club MATH DEPARTMENT 1; Fresh- 12 Miss Kittie Lou Sutton, B.S., T. P. I.; M.A., Peabody; Algebra II, Plane Geometry, Solid Geometry; Junior Ad- visor; Future Teachers Club It is the chief purpose of the Science Department to follow o planned and co- ordinated curriculum. By so doing it will enable the student to learn the principles and laws of nature and then apply them to situations met by every day living. This is accomplished by lectures, classroom dem- onstrations, projects, and actual laboratory experience. Problem solving increases in difficulty from ninth grade General Science to Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A thor- ough understanding of mathematics is a basic requirement for advanced science courses. Mr. John Lutz, A.B., Lenoir Rhyne; General Science; Freshman Advisor; Science Club Miss Odessa Black, B.S., O. C.; Biology; Sophomore Ad- visor; Speech Contestants SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Mrs. Helen Ausley, B.S., Mississippi; M.S., Yale; Chem- istry, Physics; Junior Advisor; Junior-Senior Banquet 13 BUSINESS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The Commercial Department endeavors to train students in usable skills and work habits in the field of typewriting, bookkeeping, and shorthand. The theory of these courses is introduced to the student in the classrooms through lec- ture, visual aids, and practice. When these fundamental skills are devel- oped, extensive practice work is provided in the various departments of the school and in the development of community projects. The major objective is to prepare students for of- fice positions or to provide a good foundation for specialized study in this field. The Old Testament and the New Testa- ment are taught on alternate years. The poli- cies are governed by the Ministerial Associa- tion and the class is financed by the churches of Kings Mountain. Miss Jeannine Easterling, A.B., High Point; Bible; Bible Club SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT One of the privileges and responsibilities we have as Americans living in a democratic nation is thinking for ourselves. In order for us to exercise intelligently our freedom of thought, it is not enough for us to know only that which lies within the boundaries of America. It is necessary for Americans also to know about the development of mankind in order to understand better the problems facing our contemporary world. Through the study of such courses as Civ- ics, Geography, American History, World His- tory, and Economics and Sociology, Kings Mountain High offers to its students an op- portunity to gain a thorough knowledge of our own country and a graphic picture of our world. We analyze the events of the past and their solutions in order to understand more fully the decisions that are made today. Mr. Donald L. Parker, A.B., Maryville; Economics and Sociology, Guidonce; Monogram Club, Head Coach Bas- ketball; Sophomore Advisor Mr. Fred Withers, B.A., Lenoir Rhyne; M.A., S.
