a OM; . Wm VoeI-Uv kw w 3 u, ts ,. ., 2:- - up I . '1' Rev. Lane D. Kilburn, C.S.C., Academic Dean notifying Present Academic Dean Rudolf J. Schleich and President Richard Passon of his honorable mention and Edward Rev. Kilburn,C.S.C.ata recent River Regatta. Hanlon of his acceptance as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. THE PRESIDENCY OF REVEREND LANE DIXON KILBURN, C.S.C. Father Kilburn was indeed no stranger to King's before his rise to its Presidency in 1964. He Hrose through the ranks so to speak. His first position at our college was centered around the duties of a faculty member of the Philosophy Depart- ment. After three years as a teacher he was appointed to the administrative office of Academic Dean and Vice-President of the College under the Presidency of Rev- erend George Beneglia, C.S.C. It was from the Dean's chair that he ascended to the College Presidency. Father Kilburn's Deanship was indeed a very colorful one, one which distin- l guished him as a very weIl-bred and learned man. He seemed destined to achieve l greatness. The highlight of his tenure was his selection to travel to India on an United States Department Field Trip with other national educators. After six years in the post of Academic Dean, Father became our President. Father Kilburn's tenure of office, 1.964 to 1974, has been described by one ad- ministrator as a Decade of Progress. And indeed it was. During his Presidency the College building program realized its full potential. Today King's is graced with one of the finest and modern campuses in the United States for its size. He has also extended an arm of friendship to the community, which has in turn resulted in a healthly community-college relationship. Through his efforts King's has de- veloped into one of the most democratic college campuses in Pennsylvania. or in the United States for that matter. King's is also represented on various national, state and local committees and organizations through his initiative. Despite these accomplishments, Father always remained a very personable individual. He was al- ways compassionate and always concerned about all King's people, as indicated by i the following 1965 REGIS dedication: The 1965 REGIS is dedicated to the Reverend Lane Dixon Kilburn, C.S.C., known to students primarily as a friend and incidentally as the college President. He looks the part of a college president, an intellectual, a fine man, all of which he is. His voice is pro- nouncedl y clear and low pitched. His eyes are clear and direct. noting things which usually i escape the attention of some one less astute. Most encounters with him take place by chance, happening in a crowded cafeteria, on a quiet Sunday morning, or during the rush on a class break. But with each meeting comes a feeling which can be explained only by the ingrained aura of courtesy which emanates from the man toward everyone. Only a person surrh as F r. K ilbum could make so universal an expression seem so personal. The period in which Father Kilburn served as President of King's College was not an easy one. It was a very dramatic and changing era. Our American society was constantly in flux. King's made several advancements in times when many col- leges and universities were falling behind. For these advancements the entire King's Community will forever be grateful to Father Lane Dixon Kilburn, C.S.C., for the time he has spent with us.
