Rudolf Schleich came to King's in 1957,7to join the Department of-History. Having emigrated from Germany at an. early age, he was raised in Buffalo, New York. During the Second World War he served with the American Armed Forces in Italy. He subsequently received his baccalaureate degree from Canisius College and the MA. from the University of Buffaio. As a Fulbright Fellow, he did his primary research in Vienna and Munich in seventeenth century Austrian-German his- tory which led to the Ph.D. at Fordham University. The years at King's have witnessed his promotion in rank to full professor t197D, the chair- manship of the History Department t1968 ',69t and the deanship of the College t1969i.Dean Schleich and his wife the former Johanna Gradl have been blessed with five daughters: Lisa and Katherine who are students at King' 5; and Kristin, Lauren and Maria. L The Class of 1974 has been very fortunate to make many special friends during their short stay at King's. Several of these individuals have had a tremendous influence on us, but none as much as Dr. Schleich. There are many sides to this man known to so many of us simply as HRudy. He is a scholar, teacher, administrator, athlete, and friend. For seventeen years he has endeavored to serve our Alma Mater to the best of his ability; his life in King's has taken so many forms that he has become our Hman for all seasons. Many students have encountered him in the most unexpected circumstances-eperhaps on the basketball or paddleball court; or at a car rally; or on the Walk for Bangledesh or backstage at the annual King's Follies; or as a competi- tor in the River Regatta; or in animated discussion at a departmental symposium; or on a dorm night rap session; or in ttmucking out after the Agnes Flood. In all these and the many other relationships the essential dimension of his presence is contained in the genuine, unsti'nting personal interest he takes In his students. It is with great pleasure that we the Twenty-fifth Graduating Class of King' 5 College dedicate the 1974 REGIS to Dean Rudolf 'J. Schleich, Ph.D. Teacher-Administrator-Friend
