The REGIS STAFF and KING'S COLLEGE present ................................ .............................................. THE1974 REGIS YEARBOOK, Volume 27 KING'S COLLEGE r C: WILKES ' BARRE h-l i: PENNSY LVANIA 1 8 7 1 1 inn September 1, 1974 REGIS 74 marks the end of an era The Decade of Progress. It commemorates the Graduation of the first class with a full complement of women, the largest Class in the history of King's College, and the Twenty-Fifth Graduating Class. With this in mind, it is my honor to present this annual on behalf of the 1974 REGIS STAFF to the whole College Community. Many students ask the ever-increasing question: Why is there a yearbook at all? Isn't it a victim of the nonsentimental sixties? The King's College yearbook has somehow managed to remain a viable organization that we hope fulfills a role within the structure of our total campus life. Large measure of this success is due to the people who've worked hard to produce this book. Most of the credit is due, however, to the nature of the yearbook role itself. The yearbook is the only campus publication that produces an overview of the school as seen by students. It also provides the type of coverage that allows a single event to be related to the total pattern of what happened in the social, political, academic and sports year. Yearbooks which failed to capture a year's essence are usually failures. At King's we are continually forced to reevaluate the strengths and weaknesses of past books. Then we use what we learned as guides for future editions. These lessons have led me to make several changes in the structure of the 26th Edi- tion, refining it further in this edition. The structural changes were coupled with a major reorganization of our staff. For the first time in the REGIS' history, women have played a major roll in the development of this edition. Two major editorial positions were held by women. Freshmen and Sophomores have also held major editorial positions. Our book has a pictorial theme CHILDREN , reminding us that we were once young and have progressed from infancy to maturity. The 27th Edition contains ten sections of and about the people in the King's Commu- nity. It is packaged in 320 pages, 38 of which are color pages, and includes 2,151 photos with 76 pieces of art work. The cover and dividers are of similar design. Each di- vider has in introduction that goes into the photo and comes out of the maze into the section. It demonstrates an unending cycie of travel. For example: The Senior Section has the last initial of each member of the Graduating Class beginning with the Class Offi- cers and comes out of the maze with the Degrees they earned. Lastly, there remains the need to define the College's commitment to student journal- ism in general and the REGIS in particular. With our recently developed Communica- tions Media Department, the valuable display of confidence from Miss Mary Barrett, Yearbook Moderator, and the support of the Board of Student Communications Media during my past two years as a REGIS official, I am sure that the commitment is genuine. Finally, it is the students that make the REGIS and they must retain student interest in the book and keep it a leader in campus publications. W David L. Rudolf Schleich came to King's in 1957,7to join the Department of-History. Having emigrated from Germany at an. early age, he was raised in Buffalo, New York. During the Second World War he served with the American Armed Forces in Italy. He subsequently received his baccalaureate degree from Canisius College and the MA. from the University of Buffaio. As a Fulbright Fellow, he did his primary research in Vienna and Munich in seventeenth century Austrian-German his- tory which led to the Ph.D. at Fordham University. The years at King's have witnessed his promotion in rank to full professor t197D, the chair- manship of the History Department t1968 ',69t and the deanship of the College t1969i.Dean Schleich and his wife the former Johanna Gradl have been blessed with five daughters: Lisa and Katherine who are students at King' 5; and Kristin, Lauren and Maria. L The Class of 1974 has been very fortunate to make many special friends during their short stay at King's. Several of these individuals have had a tremendous influence on us, but none as much as Dr. Schleich. There are many sides to this man known to so many of us simply as HRudy. He is a scholar, teacher, administrator, athlete, and friend. For seventeen years he has endeavored to serve our Alma Mater to the best of his ability; his life in King's has taken so many forms that he has become our Hman for all seasons. Many students have encountered him in the most unexpected circumstances-eperhaps on the basketball or paddleball court; or at a car rally; or on the Walk for Bangledesh or backstage at the annual King's Follies; or as a competi- tor in the River Regatta; or in animated discussion at a departmental symposium; or on a dorm night rap session; or in ttmucking out after the Agnes Flood. In all these and the many other relationships the essential dimension of his presence is contained in the genuine, unsti'nting personal interest he takes In his students. It is with great pleasure that we the Twenty-fifth Graduating Class of King' 5 College dedicate the 1974 REGIS to Dean Rudolf 'J. Father Kilburn was indeed no stranger to King's before his rise to its Presidency in 1964. He Hrose through the ranks so to speak. His first position at our college was centered around the duties of a faculty member of the Philosophy Depart- ment. After three years as a teacher he was appointed to the administrative office of Academic Dean and Vice-President of the College under the Presidency of Rev- erend George Beneglia, C.S.C. It was from the Dean's chair that he ascended to the College Presidency. Father Kilburn's Deanship was indeed a very colorful one, one which distin- l guished him as a very weIl-bred and learned man. He seemed destined to achieve l greatness. The highlight of his tenure was his selection to travel to India on an United States Department Field Trip with other national educators. After six years in the post of Academic Dean, Father became our President. Father Kilburn's tenure of office, 1.964 to 1974, has been described by one ad- ministrator as a Decade of Progress. And indeed it was. During his Presidency the College building program realized its full potential. Today King's is graced with one of the finest and modern campuses in the United States for its size. He has also extended an arm of friendship to the community, which has in turn resulted in a healthly community-college relationship. Through his efforts King's has de- veloped into one of the most democratic college campuses in Pennsylvania. or in the United States for that matter. King's is also represented on various national, state and local committees and organizations through his initiative. Despite these accomplishments, Father always remained a very personable individual. He was al- ways compassionate and always concerned about all King's people, as indicated by i the following 1965 REGIS dedication: The 1965 REGIS is dedicated to the Reverend Lane Dixon Kilburn, C.S.C., known to students primarily as a friend and incidentally as the college President. He looks the part of a college president, an intellectual, a fine man, all of which he is. His voice is pro- nouncedl y clear and low pitched. His eyes are clear and direct. noting things which usually i escape the attention of some one less astute. Most encounters with him take place by chance, happening in a crowded cafeteria, on a quiet Sunday morning, or during the rush on a class break. But with each meeting comes a feeling which can be explained only by the ingrained aura of courtesy which emanates from the man toward everyone. Only a person surrh as F r. K ilbum could make so universal an expression seem so personal. The period in which Father Kilburn served as President of King's College was not an easy one. It was a very dramatic and changing era. Our American society was constantly in flux. King's made several advancements in times when many col- leges and universities were falling behind. For these advancements the entire King's Community will forever be grateful to Father Lane Dixon Kilburn, C.S.C., for the time he has spent with us. The pres ence of an increasing female enrollmen contributed an impressive measure 0 spirit which aided the class' socia projects. The atmosphere surrounding the Sophomore Class this year was one of llwe made it . At this time it is the norm that a class slack off. Not so for this year's crop of survivors. After a rather blase freshman year the class seemed to become ignited with spirit and a determination to break the tradition of the sophomore slump. There were trips to the Plaestra and the John Long Center and bake sales, more or less the staples of present campus organizations. The really ex- citing aspect of the class has been the word sup- port. This will to participate was evident by the class winning first place in the Homecoming Float Contest and by the uniquely successful 13th Freshmaanophomore Cotillion. The C0- tillion, traditionally a financial night. due to a lack of interest, it was the reverse this year with a packed house. Perhaps. as the class reaches collegiate ma- turity, an even larger segment will realize that a successful scholastic career entails making it in other areas than classroom proficiency. Perhaps the brightest aspect of the Class of '74 is that they're always improving. This year's improvement can be best measured by the activities and influence which the class sponsored and fostered respectively. Money seemed to be the Juniors' primary objective during the first semester. The class promoted a fund-raising drive called the 1750 Club which made a profit of $800. While spon- soring this the class also spearheaded an attempt for a larger class allocation from Student Government, the end result being an additional $150 per class per semester. In addition to these financial ventures the Class also planned and operated the Tri-Class Party, a traditional Home- coming social function for Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors. The second semester was dominated by social activities since the class was well above a $1,000 budget all semester. in February the Juniors sponsored a Golden Greaser Night which drew approximately 500 people, while operating the food concession during the Student Government's All-Night Concert that same month. In March the class sponsored two keg parties at the Pocono Downs Clubhouse. both of which were social successes. The entire year, however, was highlighted by the annual Junior Dinner Dance on April 27th, which, besides other ex- tras, featured an open bar. At this time the class honored one of it's most outstanding members, Thomas J. Nardone, a three-year S.G. Representative, as Junior of the Year. A week later, on May 5th, the class sponsored the second AIl-College Ball for the entire college community and alumni. The presentation of the lst All-College Award took place with Mr. Frank Swingle, Miss Mary Barrett and '73 Graduate John DiPiertro being honored for their outstanding service to King's. In many respects this year was a turning point for the Class of '74, and with three of this year's officers returning for Senior Year, even more improvement seems eminent. Charlie Galbraith. 6-9 senior center in his last game. led the way with 33 points and starred off the boards. He had 25 points and 12 rebounds at the half as the city collegians took an imposing 54-35lead. Many fans in the Albright gym were heard to say they thought King's was the best team in the event with the type of play dis- played last night. The Monarchs were loose and hitting the open man. A highlight of the win was the fact that Tom Kenney, high scorer of the squad all year, notched two goals to hit his 1,000th career point. Kenney senior from Philav delphia, was playing briefly on a very bad ankle and was in the game just long enough to get the four needed points. Wilkes-Barre Times-LeadeVRecord 1'Klm ms MI! t mo. BASKETBALL King's Junior Varsity basketball enjoyed a fine 12-3 season under Coach Pat Kennedy this year. This squad a high scoring aggregation averaging close to 90 points a game played some really good teams. Among the victories are ones over St. Peter's of New Jersey, Brandy- wine Junior College. Monmouth College and Scranton U. Jayvees. The team was most impressive in Philadelphia against a tall St. Jo- seph's College junior varsity in an extra period one-point loss. Leading scorer was a 6-1 Hwalk- on . Fred Groser of Long Island. He burned the cords for 23 per game, many from orbital range. Dave Shipula of Hanover Town- ship, who played at Staunton Mili- tary Academy in Virginia, averaged 12.5 points and 10 rebounds a con- test. Dave is a 6-8, 240-pound fresh- man who needs a lot of work but has good potential. Charlie Brady, former Riverside star, a 6-6 sophomore finished with an average of 14.7 and 7 rebounds a game. Ed Nolan is a 6-3 freshman guard from the New York City Re- gion who had an average of 18.6 per game. Ed Jones, sophomore from Phila. filled in several games in the backcourt when Nolan was out of the lineup. Little Joey Walker from Norwalk. Conn., ended with an 8.8 average average and showed good moves as a ball handler. Zip DeFrank of Camp Hill averaged eight points per contest and did a real good job at both ends of the court. Breon Wil- liams, 6-4, from Washington DC. was a spot player and will be work- ing hard in the summer months. Many of these Javees will be strong candidates for the Varsity next fall. The coach then, Ray Kressler, was leaving for a post at Rider College tNJJ and the teams' future looked bleak. Wrestling coach Ned McGinIey took the job even though he knew little about the sport. Apparently McGinIey adapted quickly as he coached the team to a conference Championship a mere three years later. Gregg Nelson Mark Matlock Jeff Nelson Gerry Wasculis Joe Sterbinsky The person, along with McGinley, mainly responsible for this about- face was Junior co-captain Gregg Nelson. Gregg had an incredible year with three dual meet victories, 2nd places in MECCA tbehind an All- Americanl and the Glassboro Invita- tional and other various strong fin- ishes. This three year MVP also smashed the four year old course record at Kirby Park his first time out with a 25:18 for five miles. Joe Karoly, our itZ man, started slowly but by the fourth meet was breathing down Gregg's neck for the remainder of the season. Karoly placed 3rd in MECCA, 8th at Glass- boro and tied for lst in a dual at Baptist Bible. Joe was named co- recipient of the Most Improved Run- ner trophy and also set a new soph. record. The other Junior co-captain Jeff Nelson, came back after a knee injury and was named along with Karoly, as most improved. Jeff, running under the old school record all three times at Kirby Park, placed 5th at MECCA. The most valuable freshman, Gerry Wasculis, placed 6th at MECCA, and tied for lst place in the Baptist meet with Karoly. Senior Mark Matlock and sophomore Joe Sterbinsky saved their last races for the last race at Kirby Park. They also clinched the MECCA title with 13th and 14th respectively. Freshman Joe Neidig and senior Bill McWade were 7th and 8th men and added to the depth for the close races. The 1974-75 squad should be even more powerful with the top five harriers returning for another shot at the conference title. TOP SEASON AVERAGES Ed Markowski 78.2 Bob Zagorsky 79.7 Adam Serafin 81.4 142 The golf team's season was marked by several ups and downs throughout the year. The final record was a respectable 6-4. Although the team lacked the con- sistency needed for a better record, they did come up with severaI outstanding performances. The golfers began the season in sunny Florida as a result of accept- ing an invitation to the Miami Invitational Golf Tour- nament. This marked the 3rd consecutive year for the Monarchs to participate in this event. Although the golfers finished well down in the standings against some top competitive condition, they certainly gained needed practice under competitive conditions. The highlight of the season followed in the first match which was against Scranton. The duffers upset Scranton by a score of 12-6 after trailing 4-2 midway through the match. They thus gained the lOO'th victory for Coach Budash in his coaching career at King's. This was an especially fine win as Scranton went on to an 18-3 record and a bid to the NCAA tournament. Due to several cancellations, the next match was a return date with Scranton. This time the golfers were defeated despite exceptional performances by Bob Zagorsky and Adam Serafin who each fired l-under par 71's. In spite of these performances, the depth of the Royals was too much to overcome. Defending Champions of S.U.N.Y. Invitational Golf Tournament pictured above are Bill Yunkunis, Adam Serafin, Captain Ed Markowski and Bob Zagorsky. In the remaining weeks, the Monarchs went on to de- feat Western Maryland, Mt. St. Mary's, Harpur, and Oneonta State while losing close decisions to Mercy- hurst and Lycoming and being soundly defeated by a strong Kutetown squad. They finished strong by up- setting York in the final match of the year, thus gaining another winning season. In their defeats to Mercyhurst and Lycoming, the golfers were plagued by the inablility to field their strongest squad as several of the starting performers were unable to compete due to tests or late classes and labs. This was a problem which plagued the team throughout the season and led to the cancellation of a match at East Stroudsburg. Individually, the Mon- archs were led by the always consistent and often spectacular performances of their top three players, Ed Markowski, Adam Serafin, and Bob Zagorsky who each participated in every match during the season. Each of them averaged in the 70's with Captain Ed Markowski leading the way with a 77.8 average. Ed completed a fine 4-year career with the team in which he compiled a fine 45-12 dual meet record. Ed also gained the dis- tinction of participating in every match and tournament in his 4 years at Kings. Both Serafin and Zagorsky con- tributed several fine performances in which they played near par golf. Also aiding the cause of the Monarchs were Mike Harostak, Joe Conzetta, Bill Yunkunis. John McLin, and Wes Shaw. Although they didn't play in all the matches, each of these individuals contributed key wins in leading the squad to victories in several closely- contested matches. This was the first time in league history that King's won the top spot, always losing to Lehigh on the last clip in five previous seasons of competition. King's also established a new team record with a 1336. Individual per- formances saw John Katchko score a first place 275, some 30 points above his average with Chris Kovalchik copping second with a 274 and Mick Gentilesco registering a 271, thus making it a complete sweep for King's. Of the top ten individuals in the League for the year, senior Chuck Pearson, the captain of King's team holds the top average with a 268.375. His teammate Chris Kovalchik proved to be a strong competitor averaging 268.0 for second place honors. Mick Gentil- eseo averaged 260 to place fifth and Tony Burshnick had a 252 to place ninth giving four men in the top ten standings. Ending the season with a 10-1 record, the Monarchs proved themselves to be one of the finest Rifle teams in the State. Next year King's will be joinging the Tri-State Rifle League to compete against 18 teams from many of the big Colleges and Universities in the states of New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Coaching the most winning team in the school, Mr. William Kane, has seen his team participate in the most prestigious West Point Invitational Tournament usually finish- ing in the middle of 50 select teams from all over the country including many Olympic champions. ' , SMNS Apparent optimism has guided the '73 team to a 6-2 record with veteran mentor Tom Denby at the helm. With a 7-1 record behind them and a six game winning streak on their shoulders, the Golden Knights, led by four year veterans and tri-captains Gary Krudys, Ray Payne, and Ed Sickler, launched their attack. As the season approached, it became ap- parent that for the Golden Knights to garner any honors. the team had to pull out a vic- tory over Canisius. the home opener. But the Canisius team proved to be too much for our men to handle. Defeated by a score of 16-6. the King's Club realized that this loss might have ended all dreams of an encore to the preceeding campaign. Determined to snap back from this defeat. Coach Denby turned his boys loose on a weak Oswego Team on the opponents field. Behind the running of backs Dave Begliomini of Wyoming and John Jacobs of McLean, Va. and the HGolden Toe of Ed Gongleski of Swoyersville, the black and gold ripped Oswego State by a score of 35-13. But victory was short-lived as Duquesne University of Pa. routed King's. 26-15, to put our record at 1-2. Pitted against the na- tion's top rated Club Football team, the Golden Knights just couldn't beat that Duke Iron offense. Compiling 246 yards to Duke's 426 and being the underdog on first downs clearly indicated that the t'we're No. 1 chant would never be echoed on the campus. Other season action saw the Golden Knights top Scranton University, 48-22 in the homecoming contest. Mike Liscovitz, the speedy halfback from Middlesex, New Jersey. led the King's scoring by snatch- ing three touchdown passes from Quarter- back Tony Matraselva of Wyoming, good for 14, 32. and 57 yards. Dave Begliomini received the trophy for the outstanding of- fensive player for compiling a total of 135 '3, 1 t s, t i z i E yards. Led by the running attack of John Jacob and Begliomini. the dead eye passing 0 Matrasselva. and the outstanding defens of Joe Piasecki, Curt Hart. and Gary Krudys all Jerdeyites, the Golden Knights romped to victories over Sienna, St. Francis of Loretto Pace, and Rutgers. Left with a debt of over $1,200 from the previous year, the Junior Officers were faced with what seemed to be an insur- mountable problem. Pre- sident Bruce Chirinko, with help of his fellow class of- ficals and Pete DeRagon led the class in their endeavors. The class sponsored a suc- cessful concert, contributed to Homecoming 74 with their Spirit of '76 display, helped with the Tri-Class Party. The Elizabethan theme of the Freshman-Sophomore Cotillion provided a great op- portunity for other members of the class to get into action. The officers worked along with Dr. Robert Paoletti, class moderator, to provide this successful Sophomore year. Junior Year Officers will be: Pete DeRagon, President; Michael Cosgrove, Vice-Presi- dent; Joni DeCIeene, Secre- tary, and Marie Basante, Treasurer. This year's lively freshman class was led by the following officers: Eric Fogg, President Claire Horos, Vice-President; Jo Ann Feddock, Secretary, and Jim Valentine, Treasurer. The accomplishment which evoked such commendition was the Class of '77's capture of the first place in the '73-'74 Homecoming Display contest. Inci- dentally. this year was the first time fresh- man took the initiative to enter the contest. Other activities in which the Class of '77 participates t'behind the scenes, much to the enrichment of the college, included sponsoring the 'tT.N.T. dance; handling the concession at the S.G. allinight concert, and co-planning this year's annual Fresh- man-Sophomore Cotillion. Hopefully, such intense spirited activity on part of the Class is indicative of tithings to come in their remaining three years at King's. Elected in April to continue this spirit were Jim Valentine, President; Claire Horos' Vice-President: Deborah Burshnic. Secree tary: and Joyce Stack, Treasurer. GETTING HOMECOMING DISPLAY READY. D S T N E D U T S REGISTRATION Registration is probably one of the most perplexing experi- ences for any student during his or her college career. It can be a time of joy or a time of disap- pointment; a time of quickness or che longest day. At King's REGISTRATION tends to be a more positive than negative experienceIAfter several years of experience at this phenome- na, Miss Mare Luksic, Registrar, has a system which keeps stu- dents satisfied for the most part. The best aspect of this sys- tem is that students have a FREE choice of' instructor, course and time. However, as is to be expected, there are cases when some students walk away very disgruntled. Registration like life has its ups and downs. If you're a Freshman and discouraged - just think of how much better it will be next year, and finally when you're a SENIOR. As one song suitably puts it: ttYou can't always get what you want. Freshman Orientation, like Home- coming. was gifted with an excess of enthusiasm this past year. The various administrators. faculty and student leaders who contributed their time and efforts to this annual . V , , event are to commended. Mr. Frank nu. . : ' '4 l... r, Pasquini. Some of the varied social events sponsored for the incoming Class of 1977 were Cabaret with a K a pizza and film night; an outdoor buffet in Regina Court: an evening concert by HTomorrow a popular group at King's this past year. and some comedy skits by KING'S very own ROSSI and STOUT. An Activities Fair was sponsored by Student Govern- ment to help acquaint the freshman with the varied extracurricular activ- ities available to the new students. Also held were the traditional opening assembly. conferences with faculty advisors and meetings with various departments of the college. student personnel and housing offi- cials. all of which were designed to acquaint the new students with their academic and campus environments forthe next few years. Music was supplied by RALPH. During the course of the evening those in attendance were introduced to the contestants for Homecoming Queen. The winners of the Homecoming Display Contest were also announced with lst, 2nd and 3rd places going to The Freshman Class, Senior Class and Football Cheerleaders respectively. Saturday's activities commenced with the Home- coming parade to the football game. The football game, the traditional highlight of the weekend was won by the King's Golden Knights over the Univer- sity of Scranton by a score of 48 to 22. Attendance at the game was exceptionally good. A freshman cheering section helped to further Iiven-up the fans. At halftime the 1973 Home- coming Queen, Miss Linda Leighton, Class of 1976, was crowned tand kissedl by Mr. Frank Swingle, As- sociate Professor of Speech and Kissing. The annual Homecoming parties, the Senior- Alumni and the Tri-Class entertained Kings- people that evening. The First Senior-Alumni Party was held at Pocono Downs Race Track Club while the Tri-Class took place in King's Susquehanna Room. Both were social successes. Day and dorm students alike decided to put their creativity to work and join in this Hspooky celebration. The girls of East Hall volunteered their time and effort to enter- tain a group of orphans from St. Stanislaus with a costume party. The children went Htrick or treating to all of the rooms on the fifth and sixth floors and received can- dy, popcorn balls, and many other goodies donated by the girls. Krantz serves as editor of the college yearbook and is completing plans for the 1974 edition. TIMES-LEADER, EVENING NEWS, RECORD, WILKES-BARRE, PA. First Wilkes-Barre Press Statement: I wish to express my thanks to Mr. Mel Boyne and to the other mem- bers of the Board of Di- rectors of King's College for the confidence in me that they have expressed in this appointment. The presidency of a college is a challenging task these days and a heavy respon- sibility; I hope, however, that l will be able to fulfill the expectations that are placed in me, and l pro- mise my best efforts in the conscientious perfor- mance of the obligations that I am taking on. I am glad, too, to be coming to Wilkes-Barre and to the Wyoming Val- ley. and I am anxious to know the community better and to come quick- ly to call this place home. It is importantthatl know I can be of service and how King's College can best serve the people of this area. In addition, King's has always had a special relationshipto the local Catholic communi- ty, and I believe that this community should have a part in the College's future. I welcome also the opportunity of ser- ving the Church here through my priesthood in any way that I can. l am, most of all, anx- ious to join those who be- long to King's College itself. The acceptance and encouragement that I met in my visit here last December have played a great part in my decision to accept this position. I personally hope that the acquaintance that l have just begun will lead to friendship. 259 1939: GOLDFISH at HARVARD 1952: PANTY RAIDS at VANDERBILT 1959: VOLKSWAGEN STUFFING at LONG BEACH STATE, CALIFORNIA 1964: FIFTY ON A BED at WAKEFIELD TECH AND ARTS, ENGLAND and now 1974: STREAKING at KING9S ON MARCH11,1974,AT 6:00 P.M., THE FIRST STREAKER AT THE COLLEGE VENTURED OUT. up in turdty and t6 spec a The came volved rest 11 i1 umxb're engt . th tinued, world , year-oj dormii ty in: grandt. ; SUNDAY INDEPENDENT, WILKES-BARRE.
