1969-70 YELLOW JACKET Kingfisher High School Kingfisher, Oklahoma Volume XXIII “Our World” Even as man walked upon the surface of another world, our world within the walls of KHS also presents the same excitement of new discovery. New friendships, new responsi- bilities, new ideals, and lasting memories constitute the pattern of our everyday lives. “Our world at KHS is an era in our lives that will in- fluence our future immensely. Small things such as the crowd- ed halls between classes, the noises in the classroom, and the yells and laughter at the noon hour all make up as big a part of this world as well as the long study hours and the dreaded semester tests. All these things, no matter how small they may seem, make KHS a very nice place to be. ... And so the pages of this book extend to you a welcome to OUR WORLD ! Table of Contents Faculty and Administration 6 Senior High Classes 14 Junior High Classes 54 Royalty 72 Sports 86 Organizations 104 Activities 126 Senior Directory 138 Annual Contributors 143 3 4 5 6 Our world encountered its first crisis with the un- timely death of our superintendent, Mr. Russell Pursell, in early October. Mr. Pursell, who had never worked outside of the Kingfisher County School System, was beginning his 16th year of service at Kingfisher High School. We would like to commend Mr. Bartlett for the fine job he has done since his arrival last February. He has worked hard with school board members, Pat Rivers, John Ruth, Joe Blair, Curran Krittenbrink, and Bill Thom- son, to carry on the school's policies. The faculty and administration, although they are a minority, find themselves in a position as the leaders of our world. Their constant efforts to wage a winning battle against the foes, ignorance and inability, result in countless hours of conferences with other teachers, heads of faculty, and parents. Their unending efforts are rarely rewarded with verbal praise, but we hope that they, like all true leaders, have learned to accept rising grade averages and increased initiative in its place. 7 School Secretaries and Counselor PAT GILMORE and PAT STOCK Superintendent's Secretaries PITSY NICK Principal's Secretary JAMES YOUNG High School Counselor 9 JOYCE BATES Cosmotology - Sponsors Junior Class and VICA. To start the year, we elected our officers as follows: Roxie Patterson - President, Jane Wood - Vice President, Deb- bie Barnard - Secretary, Don Garms - Secretary, and Mary Ann Teders - Reporter. The Junior Class float, entitled Tumbleweeds, placed third in the Homecoming Parade. Our float was graced by our class queen, Denise Post. Debbie Jech and Robert Hester were elected class favorites. After a hard fought battle with the Seniors and Sophomores, we came in first and Robert and Debbie were crowned Annual King and Annual Queen. Our lives became very active due to the responsibil- ities of working in the Junior stand through football and basketball seasons. To add to our busy year, we had the important task of planning and presenting the Junior- Senior banquet and prom. Our theme was Camelot.” We would like to express our thanks to our Junior Class sponsors - Mrs. Dage, Mrs. Storm, Mrs. Bates, Mr. Seefeldt, and Mr. Rexroat - for the great amount of help and guidance they have given us. Looking back over our accomplishments, we realize that we are better prepared for our Senior year, which we are anxiously awaiting. 31 Juniors Enter a New World Mike Adam LuAnn Allred Linda Baker Linda Barker Debbie Barnard Linda Bernhardt Peggy Blehm Barry Bollenbach Bill Bollenbach Mike Browne Brenda Cummings Steve Cupp 32 of Responsibility and Leadership George Scott pulls 2nd place basketball mini-float. Although many hours of hard work were spent in preparing our float which was entitled BC, ” things just didn't shape-up as we planned. Our hours of hard work were repaid with a fourth place in the homecom- ing parade. Our float was graced by our class queen, Vicki Voskuhl. Our class favorites, Donna Lawler and Micheal Martin, were candidates for Annual King and Annual Queen. Some of our activities to raise money during the week included an egg throw, cake and stuffed ani- mal raffles, games, and a food sale on Friday. We would like to express our appreciation to our Sophomore class sponsors, Mrs. Post, Mrs. Keller, Mr. Musick and Mr. Jech, who have spent much time and energy for the benefit of the class. We would also like to thank our class parents - Mr. and Mrs. Gene Arm- strong, and Mr. and Mrs. Oral Stake. The Yellowjackets football team, through spirit and determination, finished the season with a six win, four loss record, the best that Kingfisher has had in over ten years. Both the boys’ and girls' basketball teams did ex- tremely well by advancing all the way to State com- petition. Both teams had exceptionally good records, the girls finishing with a 19-10 record, and the boys finishing with a 26-3. Those fantastic baseball boys got a slow start this year, but finished the season with a 14-4 record, one of the finest for KHS. The KHS track boys really burned up the track this year. The Yellowjackets ran, jumped, vaulted, and hurdled their way to win several key meets and the Con- ference championship. They also made a fine showing by advancing several boys to the State finals. The KHS golf team of 1970, which is composed of freshmen and sophomores, blasted their way out of the sand traps and onto the green to finish their season with a four win, two loss record. The Kingfisher Junior High teams kept the ball bouncing by doing extremely well also. 87 Yellowjackets Have Winning Season — 6 to 4 1st ROW (L to R): Kendall Evans. Kim Finley. One big event of the fall was the football homecoming which was held October 30, 1970. A bon fire which was held the night before kicked off the homecoming activities. Other events included a parade, football game against Garber, and a homecoming dance. On February 13 we observed basketball homecom- ing. Something new this year was the making of mini- floats. The queen was crowned during the halftime of the boys' game with Mustang. The speech class presented many plays during the year. A big event for the Seniors was the Senior Play, which was presented the 7th and 8th of May. A most memorable occasion for the juniors and seniors was the Junior and Senior Prom held on April 25, 1970. The theme was Camelot. Other spring activities included the FFA banquet, senior tea, band concert and coronation. Winding up the year's activities was the Senior graduation held on May 21, 1970. At this time 73 Seniors received their diplomas. Looking back one can see it has been a busy and memorable year. 127 Football Homecoming Creates Enthusiasm LEFT TO RIGHT: Tri-Captain Rich Cowell, Queen Attendant Donnita McMullin, Junior Attendants Holly Harris and Roger Post, Tri-Captain Don Franz, Queen Karen Myers, Tri-Captain Jimmy Don Smith, and Queen Attendant Joyce Bredel. 128 Kingfisher versus Garber in homecoming game. This is true all over the world. In fact, each school represents a world of its own. The world of KHS is brimming with memories of friends.classes, teachers, noon-hour events, sports, and trips to the office. In the course of many years, however, these memories may become blurred and indistinct. The staff and I hope that we, through our efforts with the 1970 YELLOWJACKET, have helped to keep many of these mem- ories as vivid as the day they occurred. The key to success and the future lies in cherishing the mem- ories of the past and living for the present. 142 Annual Contributors Kingfisher Agricultural Supply- People's National Bank Hukill's Kingfisher Nursing Home, Inc.
