Doyou remem- ber that back ofthe high brick wall of our new High School audito- rium, an old building of 1911 vintage once stood, and with beckoning arms urged troops of students to come within and partake of the feast of learning? In nostalgic ret- rospect we consider the lessons learned from dedi-, cated teachers: the close friendly association of ring cheers as football teams passed in review: and the fine school spirit W that pervaded our old school. students, the stir- We know that in the past the old - . V school fulfilled its purpose, and we are Wmten by Mrs' Emd scott Bagwell' erecting a new modern plant that will maintain our tradition of high scholarship and personal integrity. Our new physical plant will make possible a pleasant, more effi- cient type of instruction that was missing in the old. The desire for learning will be keener and we can realize that the concentration thereof is the only hope of the future. In our new surroundings we must continue to foster intellectual growth as a primary object: likewise the new environment will stim- ulate an attitude for continued learning throughout life. The citizens of Kingfisher have long and earnestly thought, planned, and worked to improve their schools in every way. The entire community has participated in making possible the erection of an adequate modern school plant. Last year, under the able leadership of Superintendent Russell Pursell and the members of the Kingfisher School Board a new building project, which embodied an entirely fresh concept of a school plant, was launched. This project entailed the demolition of the old Junior High and Shop buildings: the modemization and improvement of the Senior High building: the erection of a new auditorium, class rooms, band room, shop room, science room, and F. F. A. quarters: and the enlargement of Wash- ington Grade School. This half-million dollar project will be completed ln August. It has been an unusual-and rewarding-experience to have seen the school plant materialize before our very eyes from day to day. It has been a dream come true! Do you remember only yester-year when we sat on the old stone benches out front, strolled about the campus, or just pondered about our dream school? And now-the dream is a reality. Off with the old - on with the new, has indeed been a watchword here in Kingfisher this year. This is a new day and we are keeping abreast of the times Only a few months ago man's most ancient figure of speech passed into the oblivion of reality: aiming at the moon is no longer fantasy. We too, have accomplished our dream--a new school. Once again we are gathered together as a community of purposeful men and women to further improve our educational system and create a suitable field of learn- ing for our youth. We can all share the satisfaction of knowing that the new educational program we move into reflects the conviction of our fine fac- ulty as to the way this school can be more re- sponsive to its opportunities. We are challenged to attain the ultimate in learning in our new surroundings. As we go forward into this pioneering year in Kingfisher, welcoming all future students into our fellowship, let us re- mind each other: Each of us is a citizen of this community and is expected to act as such: we are the heart of an The entrance to the new gym. institution, and what we are, it will be: our business here is learning and that is up to each of us. RUSSELL PURSELL has been superintendent of the King- fisher Schools for six years. He attended the Guthrie Business College, Central State Teachers College at Edmond, where he re- ceived his B.A., and Oklahoma State University where he received his M.Ed. Will it ever be finished? FROM OLD TO NEW Students and teachers of the Kingfisher School have had the opportunity during the year to actually see a building grow from the blueprint stage. Although this has been a privilege not many youngsters in this area share, it has also been a handicap or ordeal for them. They have suffered many inconveniences, yet they have accepted and adjusted to them in grand fashion. We are gradually undergoing a change. We are shedding the old and getting a new look. We hope that this new look comes to mean as much to you and those who follow as did the old to those who preceded you at Kingfisher High School. A genial smile which greets you every day Ye Olde School Bell MR. LOREN JOHNSON, principal of Kingfisher Junior Senior High School came to the Kingfisher School system 14 years ago He received his B.S. degree from the Oklahoma Baptist University and his M.A. from the University of Oklahoma. The school year of 1958-1959 will remain in the minds of the students attending Kingfisher Junior-Senior High School for years to come. Due to the remodeling and building pro- gram, students and teachers alike have had to make numerous changes in their' school routine. Many things that had been done in the past were of necessity curtailed, and some ac- tivities, as well as some courses, dropped for a time. Both students and teachers should be commended for the co-operation shown and the rapid adjustment made to the physical changes occurring about them almost daily. When conditions are in a turmoil, the citizenship of an individual is always tested, but the attitude shown by the citizens of our school reveal their ability to look beyond the discomforts of the present and to view the future with abiding faith. All the undergraduates will benefit by the new building and even the old building with a new face, but the Senior Class of 1958-1959 is the group we wish to commend the most be- cause they will have spent their last year in a school building neither old nor new but one in the process of growing into the new. So, Seniors, we hail you as a pioneer group and may luck follow you all the days of your lives. To the other students of Kingfisher Schools, we wish you the best in your school as it changes from the old to the new. Take care of it, use it, but leave it unmarked, except with usage, for the future students who will take your place. LOREN L. JOHNSON 7 Late Again? MRS. ENID BUSWELL ---- MRS. EVA SOLOMON .... It is with mixed emotions that we, the Seniors of 1958-59, approach graduation. We can look at our past experiences and goals, and although we may not have achieved all our goals, we have had our share. Our class was well represented this year in activities. Carol Glover honored our class as class queen, Karen Paris was a beautiful football queen, Barbara Schoelen added to our glory as F.F.A. queeng Betty Maehs was'a won- derful Pep Club queeng Don Max Tharp added to the royalty by being elected annual king and Bonnie Kuntz will always be our class favorite. Steve Smola made a handsome F.H.A. king and contributed to our pride. Ray Lee Wall has not only been an excellent class president but did justice as pep club king also. Others who have united to bring recognition to our class were Bonnie Kuntz, Student Council presidentg Barbara Schoelen, F.H.A. presidentg Gayla Pierson, annual editor: Wanda Homier, pep club president Class Favorites Don Max Tharpe and Bonnie Kuntz and newspaper editorg Jerry Linton, band president and football captaing and Ralph Kooken, F.F.A. president. Ralph has also won honors for the F.F.A. and our class. As you may see, we stand by our record of activities and the future holds great promise for furthering our achievements. We are now looking forward to numerous band and glee club activities, Edmond scholastic meet, Senior Girls Tea, Junior- Senior Prom and Banquet, Senior Trip and, at last graduation. We want to thank Carl Books for being an exceptional sponsor who has faithfully helped us during our high school years. We have high hopes and expectation for the future. Many will go on to college while others of us will marry and go into our various occupations. No matter where we go, or what we do we shall always remember K.H.S. and hope to make her proud of us. Out of fifty-five members in the class, thirteen are in the band, twenty-two are in chorus, four are active F.F.A. members, two are in F.H.A., seven are on the newspaper staff, eight on the Annual staff, eight play football, four are on the girls' basketball team, one on the boys' basketball team, three on the National Honor Society, five on the State Honor Society, four are active in Pep Club and two are Pep Club cheer leaders, three are school librarians, and four are on the Student Council. This is a record that cannot be equaled by any other class in school. Our candidate, Donna Lemon, won the nomi- nation for annual queen. Calvin Vorderlandwehr was our class favorite and Joyce Mapel was our homecoming queen. Aided by our sponsors, Mrs. Ruth Payne and Mr. Jack Edge, the class had a successful year and are looking forward to being Seniors next year. FOOTBALL The 1958 edition of the Kingfisher Yellow Jackets won four of its ten games after losing the first three in a row and the first four out of the first five. The Yellow Jackets opened the season at Bethany and looked bad in losing 0-34. The next week at Yukon, KHS lost by an even more lopsided score, 8-48. Cordell Carter scored the Jacket touchdown. The third loss came at the hands of Cordell in a 3-B conference game, 0-8. The Yellow Jackets showed definite improvement in this one. At last a ray of hope shined through as the Yellow Jackets won over Carnegie, a 3-B opponent, by a score of 34-14 with Jerry Linton scoring four times and Laverne Buf- falomeat once. In one of the big games of the season, the Yellow Jackets lost to rival Crescent 0-26 to spoil an otherwise wonderful home- coming. The Yellow Jackets' strong finish commenced as touchdowns by How- ard Johnson, Jerry Linton and Bill Harrison led the way in a 20-14 win over Fairview. The Jacket's bloom faded the next week in a listless 6-28 loss to 3-B foe Geary. Jerry Linton scored the only KHS touchdown. Re- turning to their winning ways, the Yellow Jackets downed Hinton 18-0 with Jerry Linton, Laverne Buffalo- meat and Leon Miller scoring touch- downs. The fired-up Yellow Jackets dumped traditional rival Watonga by a 23-0 count. Jerry Linton scored two touchdowns and passed to end Howard Johnson for the other. The Yellow Jackets closed out the 1958 season on a sad note. Weatherford, the 3-B champs, downed the Jackets by a 40-14 score. Weatherford led by 40-8 at the half but the Jackets played them on better than equal terms in the last half. Howard Johnson and Cordell Carter scored the KHS touchdowns. At the close of the season, half- back Jerry Linton and tackle Steve Smola were placed on the All-District team. x l FIRST ROW: Kenny Martin, Jimmy Minfield, Cordell Carter, Larry Peterson, John Yarbrough, Lyle Walton, John Thorpe, Dennis Kale, Don Younger, Jim Staudacher, Danny Webber, Emery Cole. Larry Mack Baade Born ...f X ugust 13, 1940 Died . . . March 19, 1959 Senior - Kingfisher High School 1959 We learned to value and depend upon him for his fine qualities of loyalty and con sideration of others. We appreciated his friendly smile and his happy outlook on life. Larry was newer afraid of work and was ready to take his share - or more than his share - of work to be done. He gave generously of his time to help others, We were glad to call him Friend The Lord is my shepherdg I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with meg thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oilg my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. 78 fQZ57MffM fm., ,fygpmwf M J 5515 41515 X-2 INTER-COLLEGIATE PRESS Publishers Cover Manuiuclurers Book Bnndevs FACTORY HOME OFFICE Kunsns City rsyilxgxe, 5' - W , , J.
