Seven publications have appeared since that time. In 1930 the name was changed to the Yellowjacket, to correspond with the name given the football squad by Max Thomas who was then a reporter on the Kingfisher Times and Free Press. In 1948 the seniors sponsored the book, and it was a senior project for three years. In 1951 it became an all-school project. The book received a Merit award in the con- test conducted by the Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association at Oklahoma University in 1951. This group having been discontinued, the staff joined the National Scholastic Press Association of the Journalism Department of Minnesota Uni- versity. In so doing, they hope to improve their book. From the Old to the New The first permanent home of Kingfisher High School was built in 1911. At that time it seemed commodious and luxurious and in the upper story of the condemned Beard Building, When we moved into our new high school building, the junior high school moved into their new home, the Chicken Coop, built from the old Methodist Church building, which had been moved to the rear of our building. to us, for we had held our classes in the basements of churches As our numbers increased, our home became inadequate, and the school board built a new home for us in 1922. When we moved into this, we bequeathed our old home to the junior high school, and they have occupied it ever since. We now have a Shop Building, built in 1940, which houses the Industrial Arts and Mechanical Drawing classes. Seven years later we added to our buildings, a garage to accommodate the five school buses. -3- ,mga 1 vi ,W .mr-wwf-rs-w MW Lg -rm vmu. gxx X, .A .. we f Q X rat? ,1 iw ' , ' AS? fs T53 .IE-R5 MR. He also teaches a class in Problems of De- mocracy. He is a past president of the Lions Club. Administration MR. RUSSELL PURSELL Superintendent The Kingfisher schools are to be congratulated upon having Mr. Rus- sell Pursell for their new superinten- dent. Mr. Pursell received his bachelor of science degree from Central State College at Edmond and his master of education degree from A Kr M at Still- water, He has taught in the cotmty schools for twenty years, coming to Kingfisher this year. He is secretary of the county O. E. A. group, secretary of the School Masters' Club, and is a member of the Rotary Club. Board Gives Superior Backing Our efficient board of education has exercised a general supervision over the affairs of the school system through the years. It is composed of 'J' five members who meet once a month to consider and to act upon current I 11 problems. i This year it has made available a goodly quantity of teachers' supplies and has added new furniture to class rooms which needed it. Through its help new equipment has been added to the home economics, commercial, and science departments. In fact, it stresses all worth-while activities and keeps the school in good standing in the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. Mr. Guy Boyd is serving his third year as Presidentg Mr. Jack Steele is Vice-Presi- dent, and Mr. Howard Smith is the clerk of the board. Mr. Lewis Solomon has been au- ditor for thirty years, and Mrs. Thelma Ogden has served as treasurer for thirty-eight years. We give much credit to our school board for successfully managing the affairs of our schools, for without its backing we could not have had such an outstanding band, such a good athletic department with an undefeated record in the district for its football team, and an F.F.A. chapter which has more American Farmers than any other chapter in the United States. Our school also has a high scholastic rating in the district and state. First row, clockwise. Bonnie Boecher introduces the last act of our Homecoming Skit. Seniors Class officers, left to right: Mona lVlcLarty, President: Bud Wheeler, Vice-President, Mary Lou Bentley, Secretary: and John Dixon, Re- porter. Our last year is rapidly vanishing into the annals of history: yet we feel that we, the senior class of '54, have made our mark on the pages of Time. We began the final steps of our quest for knowledge in Kingfisher High School by electing our class officers to lead our forty-seven members through the rigid schedule we had set up for ourselves. Our very able and competent sponsor through our high school life has been Mr. Jack Edge. Homecoming was made an indelible memory by the following events. For three successive years we have won first place in the annual Homecoming parade, but this year we climaxed all our former efforts with our Titanic model of a Mississippi steamboat, carrying our beauteous queen, Joyce Kay Hill, That night we won an important victory over the hard-fighting opponents in the homecoming football game, and the crowning of our charming and vivacious queen caused all of us to catch our breath with pride. After the game we enjoyed all the festivities that followed-the victory march and the home- coming dance. One of the most memorable events of the year came on the cold, rainy night that our eight senior football players helped break an eleven-year jinx in the game with Watonga. The last event of which we were proud was the election of our candidates, Mona McLarty and L. H. Snider, to be Annual Queen and King. Our class has had leaders in every field of achievement, together with equal measure of success in all undertakings. As we look to the future, we eagerly anticipate even greater prosperity lying over the horizon we are so rapidly approaching. What Is It? Early construction of our prize winning float. Let's See . . . Craterville or Crater- ville, says Sponsor Edge. ..10.. o-O' DONNA BAKER KATHEY HUDSON ROBERTA CHRISTIAN JOHN NEWKIRK Donna Baker .... They are found in every activity of school life: twenty-one in band, sixteen in athletics: eleven in F.H.A. and F.F.A.3 fourteen in pep club, and seven on the Annual staff. Many of them hold office in these organizations. We have worked hard to accomplish our goal, the best Junior- Senior Prom ever held in Kingfisher High School, this was made possible by having the concession stand at the games, by having a paper drive, and by selling all-occasion cards. Our class play, Plain Jane, was given March 5, and we were very proud of all the cast headed by Jim Hunt and Nancy Reherman. Three members of our class, Terry Christy, Ann Larrabee, and Aletha Cerny, were awarded memberships in the National Honor So- ciety, and four members, Terry Christy, Billy Jones, Wanda Stewart, and Aletha Cerny, were made members of the State Honor Society. Mrs. Enid Buswell and Mr. Leonard Ward were our sponsors and gave us untiringly of their help and encouragement, and we feel that we owe them much gratitude and many thanks. Be Happy! Go Lucky' T . ed Coch- rane makes the thi rty day test. ll T, We started the year feeling very big, for it now was our first year to really be a part of the high school. One of the first things that we did was to elect our officers: President, Carol Campbell, Vice-Presi- dent, Inez Snider, Secretary-Treasurer, Billy Davis, Reporter, Jimmy Parham. Then we chose our class colors, aqua and white. Our class sponsor was Mr. Carl Books. Homecoming seemed to come very soon after school started this year, and we spent quite some time choosing a theme and a slogan for our float for the Homecoming Parade. We finally decided on Stairway to the Stars. Mary Lyle Dulany was our queen and made a beautiful picture as she graced our float in the downtown parade. Our skit, The After-Effects of the Kingfisher-Yukon Football Game, presented at the Pep Rally the night before the homecoming game, won first place and was presented in assembly the next day. We are very proud of the boys in our class who played on the football and basketball teams. We also have a large number of our members in the band and in other school activities. We give the credit for much of the success of our class to our sponsor, Mr. Carl Books, who has always been ready with a helping hand and a cheery word of advice. With him as our sponsor, we hope to go on through high school as a very successful and outstanding class. A Nose for News! Mr. Books looks for a hot tip. Jes' Workin'! In the contests entered so far this year, they have won a Superior rating in Class B at the State Marching Contest at Midwest City and an Excellent rating in the parade at Norman on O.U. Band Day. The Annual Christmas Concert was well attended as were the Religious and Spring Concerts. These public appearances show the friends and pa- trons the improvement the band has made from-time to time. The band members are very active, having had a watermelon feed, a mixer, and a Homecoming Dance after the Homecoming Game. The rummage sale netted a good sum, and the magazine sale was the largest ever held by the band. The people of Kingfisher and the Band Sponsors have honored the band annually with a banquet given during the pre-commencement period. The band is looking forward to another successful year and hopes to improve and add to the list of its accomplishments. Vocal The high school vocal department has had its share of busy activity throughout the year. In the fall all attention was focused upon the Thanks- giving Choral Festival at Stillwater, November 23rd. The mixed chorus, together with choruses from eighty other schools in the state, participated in this event. The numbers to be sung were practiced for several weeks previous to the Festival Day. On the scheduled day a joint rehearsal of all choruses began in the morning, and continued throughout the day, a con- cert was given that night. Next on the agenda was a Christmas concert on December 19th, given by the instrumental and vocal groups. The vocal numbers were performed by the mixed chorus, girls' chorus, and boys' quartet. These same selec- tions were sung at an assembly program four days later. With Christmas over, attention was given to organization and rehearsal of small ensemble groups. Demands of civic organizations for special music were frequentg these ensemble members were kept busy with numerous out- side rehearsals, Also at this time thoughts turned to contest time in the spring. Several large vocal groups, together with small ensembles and solos, entered vocal contests in March and April. These groups also took part in the Tri-State Festival in May which is held annually on the Phillips University Campus in Enid. From the newly-organized high school chorus we are expecting much in the future years. We hope interest in it will grow, and that it will be- come a necessity in the lives of Kingfisher High music lovers. .42- JUNIOR I-IIGI-I GIRLS' TRIO Fayruth Van Horn, Shirley Smith, Marylu Boyd. -1 Robb anna De 00 31 fy L ass NWT Ou S09 B911 I1 BOYS' QUARTET John Solomon, Joe Dulany, Harold Long, Joe Pyatt .43- Amr Ref: A Our Homecoming Float F. H. A. We, the Future Homemakers of America, started our year by attending a district meeting at Weatherford, and a sub- district meeting at Watonga. The goal for the year, One hundred per cent participation, was accepted by our chapter. Our officers were installed by the Dover chapter at a for- mal meeting. The program of activities included: a food stand at the fair, a display window during F.H.A. week, guest speakers at several business meetings, a coffee for the teachers, sewing banquets, a talk on careers by different professional people, and the FHA-FFA Christmas dance. Other highlights included the state meeting in March and a talk by Miss Blanche Port- wood, state director of Vocational Homemaking, about her European trip. As a special project we adopted some Navaho Indian girls whom we will remember on all special days. We gained twenty-two members this year, making the chapter a total of fifty members. The high school girls' basketball team of 1953 has completed a very successful year. Twelve of the thirty girls who came out were freshmen. There are six seniors, but with the material coming up, the outlook for a good team next year is very bright. Of the twenty games played, only seven were losses. The team participated in three tourna- ments: the County, the Medford Invitational, and the District No. ll. At Medford they went to the finals, being defeated there, but they won the sportsmanship trophy, In the Dis- trict tournament they won by a score of 40-38, winning by Sudden Death in the sec- ond overtime.
