CAROL CAMPBELL Vice-President EDDIE GLASS President MARY LYLE DULANY Secretary-Treasurer BOBBY WOOD Reporter We entered Kingfisher Junior High School, fifty-six strong, a happy group of twenty-four girls and thirty-two boys, on September 2, 1952. The theme for our float was the wishing well, and our queen, Inez Snider, rode on our float. Our skit, “Sissy Football,” won first place and was presented at the homecoming program. We have three girls on the high school basketball team and one boy on the high school football team. We are very proud of our freshmen boys’ basketball team. The president of the student council is a member of the freshman class. The Kingfisher High School Band is enriched by fourteen of our members. Most of the class participated in the Junior High Christmas Operetta, and many had leading parts. It has been a pleasant and successful year with laughs, disappoint- ments, and happy memories of our achievements. We have enjoyed a hayrack ride and wiener roast and are anticipating the coming events: pro- motion exercises, our assembly program, skip day, and the Eighth-Ninth Grade Prom. We are proud of the fact that we inherited two of the best sponsors, Mrs. Buswell and Mr. Ward. Our class float representing the “Pathway to Knowledge” won third place in the Homecoming Parade, and our queen, Janet Johnson, was beau- tiful and gracious. We are proud of our athletic record—seven lettermen in football, and two boys and one girl on the first team in basketball. Most of our mem- bers are in band, F. H. A., or F. F. A. Our accomplishments this year have been a source of joy to us, and we are hoping that our class will maintain this same interest in school activities through the rest of their school life. MARY LOU BENTLEY Secretary-Treasurer EUGENE WHEELER Vice-President MONA McLARTY President BETTY HELT Reporter JunicrA Our dass entered the 1952 school year with twenty-five boys and twenty-four girls. We worked diligently in the concession stand during football and basketball season helping to finance the annual Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. Our annual play, directed by Miss Argus Dickerson, Love Is—Too Much Trouble, was well-received and was a financial success. Our class has taken a leading part in all school activities, not only being members of the groups, but also holding offices. Five of the six boys who went out for football played on the first string. Six boys and six girls went out for basketball, and several made the first string. Our float, a replica of K. H. S., won first place in the Homecoming Parade, and we were proud of our queen, Roberta Christian. Mary Lou Bentley won additional honors for our class by being elected Annual Queen. The student body elected Joyce Kay Hill Turkey FTincess for the Annual State Turkey Show. Mr. Jack Edge and Miss Joy Blevins, our sponsors, deserve much credit for our successful year. Under the spon- sorship of Mr. Books, we elected our class officers and prepared for the business of our last school year. Our class has been comparatively small with only thirty-six members. But seniors have been active participants in all school activities, thus making up the lack of quantity by an abundance of quality. Our first social activity was our hayrack ride, and even though some of us almost froze, every one had a wonderful time. We seniors were in charge of homecoming festivities. Homecoming is always one of the big events of the school year, but this year it seemed better than ever to us seniors, anyway. Our float, decorated in blue and white and built around the theme, “Let Freedom Ring,” won second prize in the parade. At the game that night, our senior football queen was crowned, and we were very proud of her. The beautiful scene seemed to inspire the football team, too, for we won a decisive victory over the other team. “Gather ye rosebuds while you may, Old time is still a’flying,” seemed to have influenced the senior girls, for at the last count three were married and six were engaged. The reali- zation that “old time really is a’flying” came to us with a shock when we ordered our graduation announcements. But we feel that the year has been one of our very best—full of memories, laughs, hard work, some trials, but not one single regret. Only five per cent of the junior class and fifteen per cent of the senior class are eligible for membership. According to national rules, selection is based on scholar- ship, character, leadership, and service. Initiation of the new members of 1953 was held in a public assembly. Each candidate was presented an official pin and membership card. Mrs. Lewis Solomon is sponsor of the group. The State Honor Society includes those who rate scholastically in the upper ten per cent of the high school. This is computed on the basis of the past two semesters’ work. Vocal hepar intent VOCAL SOLOISTS George Stallcup anrl Shirley Ogden This year the Junior High department of vocal music has rung the bell in accom- plishments. The really big event was the Christmas Operetta, The Christinas Bazaar, presented by the entire Junior High student body of one hundred and fifty. The capacity crowd in the auditorium thoroughly enjoyed the operetta which was “highlighted” by two numbers from the Freshmen Boys’ Chorus. Numerous small programs have been presented by the Junior High with great suc- cess. George Stallcup, an outstanding soloist, went over in a big way at a Rotary Club program. Miss Dickerson, with a group of girls, demonstrated a music class for the Kingfisher Business Women’s Club. Jo Ann Hodgson, Johnnie Solomon, and Shirley Ogden have helped to present several successful music programs in high school. Their willingness to co-operate and perform on the spur of the moment has been appreciated by all. The department is looking forward to a busy and successful contest time this spring. Some of these high points of achievement are: recog- nition of the Kingfisher chapter of F.F.A. as the most out- standing chapter in Northwestern Oklahoma, for the second time; establishment of the chapter as the sheep showing center of Oklahoma, members of the chapter having ex- hibited the Grand Champion or Reserve Grand Champion Lamb in every major show in Oklahoma. Norman Hale has had the Grand Champion Lamb at the Tulsa State Fair for the last two years, and Kingfisher Norman Hale holds his lamb which was Reserve Grand Champion at the Tulsa State Fair. fs I members exhibited ten of the top eighteen lambs there this year. Johnny Bengs had Grand Champion Barrow in the County Fair. Dale Wendt let every one know that Kingfisher was present at the Oklahoma State Fair w'hen he exhibited the Champion Guernsey cow. In the sheep show at the Houston Fat Stock Show, Norman Hale, Fred Walta, Norman Harrison and Dale Wendt helped the Kingfisher chapter make a clean sweep by winning seven of the top prizes in the ten classes in which Kingfisher exhibited. At the American Royal Livestock Show, Fred Walta exhibited Champion Barrow in the Junior Division. Kingfisher F.F.A. members have won sixteen American Farmer Degrees, a larger number than any other chapter in the nation. There are many, many, more achievements which might be named and we are proud of all of them, for when we win honors for the Kingfisher chapter, we have won honors for Kingfisher High School. The news is contributed by the student body to the reporters who write the class, highschool. junior high school, and grade school news. The Staff hope the students and teachers have enjoyed the paper as much as they have enjoyed publishing it. They feel that they have learn- ed to gather, type, and mimeograph the news. Working on The Stinger” Mr. Ward helps junior students—Jerome Fike, Gladys Gilmour, Bobbie Brasher, and Paul Toepfer, Bud Wheeler, Bill Redwine, and L. H. Donna Baker balance the books. Because of the able coach- ing of Burl Bartlett, the Yellow Jackets have grown in strength since he came to Kingfish- er two years ago. The Yellow Jackets won their opener at Waynoka by a margin of 40 to 6. It was the second time the two teams had met on the gridiron. The next week they played Hin- ton at home, winning 32 to 0. On September 26, Kingfisher easily defeated the Okeene Whippets by a margin of 19 to 0. This was the first district game of the season and the second consecutive year K.H.S. has beaten Okeene 19 to 0. The following week Edmond, one of the top class A teams in the state, defeated K.H.S. 45-7. Next, Kingfisher played host to Crescent and beat them 32-7. This was Kingfisher’s Homecoming game. The team elected Bobby Foote honorary captain and Richard Mitchell honorary co-captain. The Jackets’ defense was strong when they journeyed to Yukon, and they rallied over the Millers by a 18-6 margin. On Oc- tober 24, Kingfisher played Perkins and won an easy 27-0 victory. The second district game was with Geary. Kingfisher came from behind to win 26-13. The following week Watonga came to Kingfisher for the annual gridiron tilt. The Jackets fought valiantly, but the Eagles ral- lied in the final quarter to a 32-27 win. K.H.S. was seeking its first win in 11 years. The Jackets suffered their third loss, 19-14, at the hands of Weatherford in the District 3B playoff. Jay Calhoun, Richard Mitchell, Bobby Foote, Eugene Wheeler, and Lloyd Orr rep- resented Kingfisher on the All-District team. Orr was also nominated for All-State, but was not elected. The Yellow Jackets, standing third in the Cimarron Valley Conference, were not able to win a place in the county or in- vitation tournaments which were held in the new Kingfisher gymnasium, completed this year. The district tournament will be held in Okarche this year where Kingfisher plays their first game with Calumet. The team played twenty games this season, winning six and losing fourteen. They participated in an invitational and a county tournament. Many of the games played this year were lost by only a few points. With the experience gain- ed in the last two years, they hope to make their next year one of the most successful in the history of girls’ basketball at Kingfisher. The four cheerleaders were attired in blue skirts and gold sweaters, each bearing a leader’s blue mega- phone. The club sponsored many pep rallies during football season, two of which were climaxed by snake dances downtown. Wanda Boyd and Wesley Hicks were crowned Pep Club King and Queen during the Homecoming rally held on the eve of the game.
