GIRLS' ATHLETICS Athletics for the girls this year have been confined chiefly to basketball, We did, last fall, play softball and volleyball during Activity Period, We hope to again this spring, We may be able to form a softball team and play a game or two with other teams, We did this last spring, playing two games with the Strong girls, The basketball girls, under the able coaching of Principal Clunie, have finished a very successful season, The squad lost two players from last year's team, Christine Donahue and Viola Reid, but it gained new ones from the Freshman class, Early in the season the squad chose a manager Lillian Nile '49 and as assistant manager Louise Taylor '50, The team played eighteen games in all: Seven non-league games, ten league games, and the All Star game, They lost four of the non-league ones, but, of the four, three were with Class M Schools, They won all ten of the games, thereby be- coming Champions of the Franklin County Small Schools League, Because they were Champions, they played, at Phillips, in the All Star game against the team composed of three All Star players from each of the other schools, The three Kingfield girls chosen as All Star were Naida Loucks '49, Bettie Packard '49, and Dena Vose '50, Following is a list of the girls on the squad, Forwards Dawn Davis '49 Bettie Packard '49 Dena Vose '50 Helen Knapp '51 Beatrice Morrell '51 The schedule of games played and the scores follow, Home starred: Kingfield 26 'FKingfield 28 'Kingfield 45 Kingfield 10 'Kingfie1d 2.4 4'Kingfield 27 '9'Kingfield 27 'Kingfield 32 Kingfield 30 Farmington Jay North Anson Jay Rangeley Town Team Strong Stratton Phillips Guards Naida Loucks, Captain '49 Arlene Niles '49 Ruth Donahue '52 Gloria Dyer '52 Eleanor Pinkham '52 Virginia Trask '52 Irma Turner '52 games are 4'Kingfield 28 Mexico 34 '9'Kingfie1d 34 New Sharon 13 Kingfield 27 Strong 23 Kingfield Z3 Stratton 16 fKingfield 22 Phillips 7 Kingfield 34 Kingfield 1 6 Kingfield 22 BOYS ' ATHLETICS New Shar on l 8 North Ans on 1 8 Rangeley l 6 The boys were very fortunate to have Mr, Graham for their athletic coach again this year, He asked all boys who were going to run Cross Country or to go out for basketball to meet with him after school, September 27, A large number answered that call, Both groups began running at once in order to get into condition, The boys who ran Cross Country were Gene Boyce, Wendell Dunham, Russell Riggs, and Austin Thompson for Juniorsg Leo Boyce, Hedley Reid, Odlin Thompson, and Richard Trenholm for Freshmen, Friday, October l, they ran their first meet over their own course, Because of the unfavorable weather not all of the teams that were invited participated, On October 8, the boys went to Rangeley to run against Phillips, Rangeley, Stratton, and Strong, The Kingfield boys won the meet, The following Tuesday, October 12, the boys journeyed to Bates College, Lewiston to run against the Bates College 24
