Hedley Reid, Odlin Thompson, and Richard Trenholm for Freshmen, Friday, October l, they ran their first meet over their own course, Because of the unfavorable weather not all of the teams that were invited participated, On October 8, the boys went to Rangeley to run against Phillips, Rangeley, Stratton, and Strong, The Kingfield boys won the meet, The following Tuesday, October 12, the boys journeyed to Bates College, Lewiston to run against the Bates College 24 QE Yi W QC: F11 BOYS' BASKETBALL SQUAD FIRST ROW: Sillanpaa, Niemi, Winter, Dunham, Morrell, Brackley, Dunham, SECOND ROW: Mgr, Hinckley, McLaughlin, Thompson, Vose, Wing, Graham, Coach, , , . 21 .. -al ' GIRLS' BASKETBALL SQUAD FIRST ROW: Trask, Turner, Packard, Loucks, Niles, Vose, Dyer, SECOND ROW: coach, Clunie, Taylor, Davis, Mon-Q11, Knapp, Donahue, Pinkham, Nile, Freshmen, On October 22, the tearn went to Wilton to run in the County Meet, They succeeded in bunching enough of their runners among the early finishers so that they won the meet, Because of this they brought' home the cup showing they are County Champions, In addition, Russell, Austin, and Gene each received individual medals for placing first, fifth, and sixth, respectively, On November 4, Mr, Graham, the squad, and the manager, Eugene Wing, traveled to Orono to participate in the State Meet, Although the competition was very keen, Kingfield finished in seventh place, and ahead of some schools much larger than ours, Because our star runner, Russell Riggs, came in second of all partici- pants, he received an individual medal, This meet brought to a close a very successful season in Cross Country, During all these weeks the basketball boys were working at their running and, as the season approached, they went into the hall to practice, The season opened officially on the evening of November 23, with the Round Robin games played here in Webster Hall, The squad lost a few men before the close of the season, The junior Varsity players included Richard McLaughlin '49, Gene Boyce '50, james McLaughlin '50, Russell Riggs '50, Garnald Hewey '51, Emerson Barron '52, Leo Boyce '52, Hedley Reid '52, Odlin Thompson '52, Richard Trenholm '52, and Robert Tufts '52, The ten on the Varsity Team, who represented us in all the tournament games were Howard Dunham '49, Eugene Wing '49, john Winter '49, Lewis Brackley '50, Wendell Dunham '50, Burchell Morrell '50, Austin Thompson '50, Robert Niemi '5l, Martin Sillanpaa '51, and Edgar Vose '52, These boys were champions in the Franklin County Small Schools League, won Consolation at the Franklin County Tournament in Farmington, and were winners of the Western Maine Small School Tournament in Lewiston, They lost a fast, but hard-fought game to Schenck High School of Millinocket, thereby losing the opport- unity to be champions of all Maine Small Schools, Because the boys were champions in their own league, on March 10, they played their final game at Phillips against the team composed of the two All Star players from other tear'-s in the league, Two of their own members, although they played with their team mates, were named All Stars, They were Howard Dunham '49, and Lewis Brackley '50, The following is a schedule of the gaxnes played by the Varsity along with their scores, Home games are starred: Kingfield Farmington Kingfield Stratton with them a cup with the following engraving: 26 S WESTERN MAINE INTERSCHOLASTIC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS CLASS S 1949 On March 5, at two o'clock in the afternoon the boys played Schenck High School of Millinocket for the State Championship and lost with a score of 46 to 48, Although this winter has been a rather poor one for Winter Sports, Kingfield was represented by several boys in carnivals at Rangeley, Wilton and Farmington, Kingfield won the County lnterscholastic Ski Nleet at Rangeley, between Rangeley, Farmington, Wilton, and Kingfield, A few practice baseball games were played last fall, Because the entire team that won the championship in 1948 are still members of K, H, S,, Kingfield hopes to have another successful year in 1949, Mr, Graham called the boys to- gether for the first time this spring on March 25, A schedule of games is being worked out with other schools, Last spring, the baseball squad consisted of Howard Dunham, Richard McLaughlin, Eugene Wing, and John Winter, from the Class of '493 Lewis Brackley, Wendell Dunham, james McLaughlin, Burchell Morrell, Russell Riggs, and Austin Thompson from the Class of '50g Robert Niemi and Martin Sillanpaa from the Class of '51, The manager for the season was Leland Huntington '50, Following is a schedule of the games played last spring: League Games Non-league Games Stratton 1 Kingfield 1 1 Strong 6 Kingfield 7
