x VARSITY BASKETBALL 1957 The King School Varsity quintet, with an overall record of seven wins and seven losses, did not have as profitable a season as anticipated, finishing with the identical record of last year's squad. The Kingsmen's main problem was height. Having only one starter over the six foot mark, the Maroon and White lost several games due to this lack of rebounding strength. Coach Olson's charges were aided by the return of four lettermeng Fred Willis, Clark Yarnum, Abbot Schwebel, and Vincent Rinella. Newcomers who round- ed out the squad included ,lim Cackler, Gordon Dancy. Stanley Rothenberg, Ed Silver, Richard Price and John Feldtmose. The Kingsmen opened the season against St. Nlaryfs and the Maroon and White led up until the end of the third quarter behind the high scoring of Fred Wfillis and Yin Rinella. when the score was knotted at 54-54. Both teams played on equal terms in the last session and the game was sent into overtime. In the overtime, Augustine's three-point play won the game for St. Mary's 63-62. Willis dropped in 37 for the Colonial Roaders. In the Brunswick game, neither team held too great an advantage and the score at the end of three periods was tied 36-36. However, the combined efforts of Frick and Zoubeck in the last quarter gained for the Bruins the victory 56-49. Playing their first game at home, the Maroon and White easily downed Cherry Lawn by a 56-39 score. Returning to the road, the Kingsmen clashed with a powerful St. Lukes Five. The Saints used an effective fast break to lead by twenty points throughout the game. The only thorn in their side was the Kingsmen's Fred Willis, who poured in 48 points. However, this was not enough as St. Lukes downed King 79-59. Still in a team slump the Kingsmen lost their fourth game at the hands of Hamden Hall. The Hallmen en- joyed a spectacular percentage from the field through- out the game and had built up a twenty point lead at the end of the third quarter. But then in the last quar- ter Fred Willis caught fire and threw in 25 points. The lead was gradually decreasing. However the game came to its end with the Kingsmen 6 points behind 72-66 despite Willis' 47 points. Furious because of their previous close losses, the Kingsmen played excellent against Roosevelt. With Willis and Daney leading the scoring column, the Kingsmen rolled up a 36-21 lead at the half. ln the second half, the Roosevelt Five used a man-to-man defense. However, Fred Willis began to drive through the opponents and registered 34 points in the second to lead King to a 81-62 victoryg Willis broke all previ- ous league scoring records with 22 baskets and l3 foul shots for 57 points. Next, the King Five battled St. Mary's at home, and this game was without a doubt, the thriller of the year.
