In 1980, all freshman organized sports were cut. As of 1982, students will have to pay a fee to join organized sports. At the end of the 1980 school year Mr. Raymond Hill, the Band director for twenty-three years took an early retirement. He was replaced by Mr. Steve Elman, and in the first year under his direction, the band entered in three competitions, placing third, fourth out of five, and fifth out of six. A jazz ensemble was also formed. In reflection, the rapid growth of King Philip can be accredited to both the faculty and students, for without their long hours and dedication, the goals of the original building committee would never have been achieved.
