Volume XX IV Table Of Contents To float on air, to soar effortlessly, to glide and drift on feathered wings . . . Man has always dreamt of sailing aloft with the birds. For centuries. he has tried on wings of feathers, cloth, and paper. His attempts were many, his failures frequent, but he set a goal and began the long trek toward it. i fi cafifiimxg Started iv xii., I -qefif I l 'lf Q I I It . 45 5 .s ' Q - YV X' 5 -Q he , if a nl1 'Eff Lip' 9 T f : Z.- fx.: -, . - , . 14-A xl S n GMC 'K ' :if ,xii 2+ Z' 4 va x -in-ng U, 117- 'a , I Q n - I , YI aff VG- LN., V iii 1- BQ ri -Ria 1 ., .- f 1 '99, 'f ff ' .ff 155 wfcf 'f Rl mf if I K ' E Q' 'gl ' 1 v TI. as . ,Q U 1 I 'wx I R xx ff : 52121. A 4 , f lli F I f Gerry Kamon Ray Felix The staff of the I98l Chieftain are proud to honor two very special men, Mr. Gerry Kamon and Mr. Ray Felix, Both men leave King Philip this year for two very different reasons: Mr. Felix to begin a new life as he retires from many years of service to King Philip, and Mr. Kamon, whose life ended tragically this year due to a rare form of cancer. Mr. Kamon was always known to his students as more than a teacher, but a friend. He could often be seen working late in the shop helping students on their cars, or doing some work for the Teacher's Associ- ation. Mr Felix. whose official title was SECURITY OFFlCER . was always there whenever you needed help, from protecting the school from vandilism, to opening a stuck locker. He will always be known as a friend and a champion frisbee player. We all wish Mr. Felix the best of luck in the future. and in everything he does. We the staff of the I98I Chieftain, dedicated this yearbook to our friends Mr. Kamon and Mr. Felix. 17 l 2 1 QRWT' gsxg A . ...iv 4 u all P? 'f FQ'-fa 5.5313 1-' .1 Q .- ,rdr-5 -gT T :1-! Qs, -gp, .. Class History ln September of l977, the Class of l98I entered King Philip Regional High School. Under the leadership of Freshman class officers, Beth Nichols-President, Pam Park-V. President, Debbie Caston-Secretary, and Jeanne Darling- Treasurer, the Class of l98l bagan its four year flight. With the guidance of Mr.Kasparian , our advisor, the first float was built in Helen Guenthner's garage. Though we were not victorious, we believed that our angelic Foxboro Warrior with the slogan King Philip Warriors, Young and Brave, Will Put Foxboro in Its Grave, was truly a masterpiece. We began fundraising almost immediately by selling Class of l98l tee-shirts which were designed by Bruce MacVarish. The candy sales also helped add to our treasury. The Semi-Formal. Just the Way You Are, which was held at the Red Snapper in Foxboro. was a new and wonderful experience for many of us. Joanne Thompson and Paula Dolan were selected as the Freshmen in the Queen's Court. Our Freshman year passed quickly, but our hopes and dreams remained. The Class of l98l was finally getting off the ground. Our Sophomore year brought a change of class officers. Joe Cataldo-President, Tom Lang -V. President. Robin Kettell-Secretary and Colleen Molloy-Treasurer, as well as a new advisor, Mr. Finase. As Sophomores, we lost all our uncertainty and we believed that we could fly as high as we dreamed possible. The first sign of our school spirit was shown at the Homecoming pep-rally as the Class of l98l won the most cheering contests. We were proud to watch our President. Joe Cataldo, as he accepted the award for best clasher. After having built a float, we knew that the second would be even better. Our Bulldog was created in a garage near Carol Mucciarone's house in Wrentham. Much to our surprise, we did not win, but our float. KP Warriors Will Keep'Em Pantin' and Send the Bulldogs Back to Canton, was something of which we could be proud. The Super Sophomore Spirit was present at many of the football games in the form of a pep-squad. These girls. predominately sophomores, were Beth Nichols, Carol Mucciarone. Lori Colletto, Kim Hollis, Julie Linsley. and Penny Shaw. They cheered and kept the KP spirit strong. The Semi-Formal, We've Got Tonight, was a success. We enjoyed a wonderful evening at the KP ballroom with the music of Joshua Tree . The Queen was Sue Villemaire and her court was Susie Shurmur and Tammy Reed. In order to raise money which we desperately needed, we sold KP visors and conducted bake sales at track meets and basketball games. In our Junior year, the skies were clear and we were flying with the wind. Graduation seemed very far away. Again, we chose new class officers and a new advisor. They were Tim Botka-President, Tom Lang-V. President. Janice Palmer-Secretary and Leah Ruprecht-Treasurer, under the supervision of advisor. Mr. Houde. ,..sv ' ZCZCSITJC3 lalnii P if-sul can 'l' Uilllllm fgff .fy 6 i -..-yi. f fxfli ffl, ' :wr T , MM! r gg ,. ' sf, at 1-uf' ,, 1 43' wr Tajik rwfrir Sh. This year's float gave us all a buzz Cs-s-s-sb. The Mansfield Hornet nested in Brad Hughes' garage for two weeks while we prepared for Homecoming. The Mansfield Hornets Will Lose Their Sting,When the KP Warriors Do Their Thing was our slogan, but once again we lost to the Senior class. At the Powder Puff football game, the Junior- Senior team defeated the Freshman-Sophomore team by a score of 26-6. The girls may owe their victory to those sexy cheerleaders. The Class of l98l had the longest Spirit Chain at the annual Turkey-Day pep-rally. Our spirit was exhibited in the form of cheers which rocked the bleachers of the old gym. During the year, we raised money by selling left-over visors and pens. The Pen Sale was a new form of fundraising. Many members of the class either sold pens door-to-door or drove those who did the selling. Though the weather was extremely wet, the Pen Sale was a worthwhile endeavor which boosted the unity of our class. The Prom Committee with Junior. Helen Guenthner, planned a very successful Junior-Senior Prom Ctheme: Always and Foreverj. The Junior court members included Paula Dolan and Susie Shurmur. The Prom was held at the Hearthstone lnn in Seekonk. The flight through the years of high school were almost over as the Class of I98l entered King Philip as Seniors. Our selection of class officers was Helen Guenthner-President, Claire Gouthro-V.President, Stephanie Vickory- Secretary, and Mary Loughlin-Treasurer. Mr. Schmidt came through for us as class advisor and for that we owe him a great deal of thanks. At the Homecoming pep-rally, the Class of l98l won the Spirit Week trophy after a week long competition in class spirit. The Senior and underclassmen were proud to be represented by Queen Robin Gage, and her court Jeanne Darling and Dawn Jaworski. Our float, When the Warriors Are Through, Big Red Will Lose Its Chew, lost to the Freshman class. Though we lost the float contest, we did not lose our Senior Spirit. The memories of the teamwork and friendship which were exhibited during the long, last nights of preparation at Helen Guenthner's house will linger on in the minds of those who were there. The Senior Supper was a success as was the Senior Prom which was held at the Sheraton Inn in Mansfield. During our last year we made money for the class trip and graduation by selling candy and mugs and by having bake sales. In the course of the four years in high school, the Class of l98l may have met with some turbulence along the way, but we had a perfect landing. King Philip High School has provided us with many learning experiences and it is up to the individual to decide how high he or she will fly in the future. YEAR I While many students felt that the number of days until graduation or the number of days until the next dance were the most important news, we must realize that many significant events were happening around the world. These events influenced our lives in the years spent at King Philip. The year I98l had many noteworthy happenings. In Janu- ary, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. and as a form of nonagressive retaliation, the United States refused to participate in the Summer Olympics in Moscow. This was a disappointing decision for American athletes, especial- ly since it was at the Winter Olympic games in February that the United States ice hockey team had been the surprise winners of the gold medal. Racial and economic unrest continue to burden that state as a result of the sudden influx of population. Not all the events of l98O were terrestrial, however. The flight of Voyager through the cosmos transmitted valu- able information to earth-bound scientists. Its color pic- tures of Saturn were dazzling. and showed astronomers that instead of the previously thought six rings, Saturn actually has over IH. 7-1-JJ l98O also brought new faces into the spotlight. including a star of the movie, The Empire Strikes Back. Yoda the little green wizard, was an irresistable hero. Also apparently irresistable to voters, another actor, Ronald Reagan, was swept to victory in the November Presidential election. defeating the Democratic incumbent Jimmy Carter. ln the latter part of the year the question on everyone's mind was Who shot J. R.? The revelation of his assail- ant in a Dallas episode was watched by the largest tele- vision audience in hisotry. Sadly, a real life shooting in New York City ended the musical career of John Lennon, a former member of the Beatles, the singing group that set the sixties to words and music. Also, a fatal heart attack ended the exploits of Inspector Clouseau, alias Peter Sellers, of the famed l Another group of people who received attention in the news were the 53 hostages taken from the American Embassy in Iran during November of l979. Their stay spanned the year, from a failed rescue attempt by U. S. Commandos in April to the negotiations and final release on the twentieth of January, I98l. As if to signify the importance of this first year of a new decade, Boston celebrated its 350th anniversiry with festivals, parades and a display of the famous Tall Ships in the harbor.
