Quill and Scroll inducts new members Quill and Scroll, an honor society organized to recognize outstanding journalistic abilities, inducted nine new members this year, A ceremonial ban- quet was held later in the year to for- mally initiate the new members. Stu- dents were selected on the basis of being a junior or senior, in the upper third of their class, and must have done superior work in the field of jour- nalism. Second year members were Debbie Newby, Jeff Kanipe, Sally Sni- der, Susan Diemert, and Kay Hendricks, a Quill and Scroll members this year were — Clockwise Melissa Roberts, Patti Minton. ' Moongerms help finance trip to FHA Conference The Future Homemakers of America started out the year by sponsoring the 1971 Richard King High School Un- favorites Christmas dance, A week prior to the event, elections were held for the unfavorites. Due to lack of in- terest, the dance was called off, but winners in the elections were an- nounced. FHA members sold moongerms, fuzzy little toys, to help finance a trip they were planning on taking to the State FHA Conference in Dallas. Separate speech, drama coaches strengthen NFL This summer, 18 NFL students at- tended various workshops in Houston. Austin, Nacogdoches, and Washing- ton, D. C. At the same time, Phil Kurzner and Paul Gold represented south Texas in National debate com- petition in California The NFL traveled to Houston, Beaumont, Austin, and San Antonio for tournaments, and sent a debate team to the Greater Southwestern Debate Tournament in Oklahoma. King placed fourth out of 70 schools in the biggest tournament in the nation, held at Bellaire in Hous- ton, King ' s own tournament was scheduled for Feb., with schools at- tending from Texas and Louisiana. Of- ficers for 1971-72 were Craig Fisher, president, Suzy Hutchinson, vice pres- ident; Charlie Shaw, recording secre- tary; Phil Kurzner, corresponding sec- retary; Aaron Bazan, treasurer; and Shannon Walker, historian. Mrs. Nancy DePuy became coach for fo- rensics, while Mrs. Nikki Boynt was the NFL ' s new dramatics coach. a.
