Involvement gets school off to a spirited start The school year got off to a good start with expectations for a better year Principal Kent Pogue set the standard rules ot conduct and dress codes, with an additional privilege of mid-term final exemptions tor seniors. King took on a new look in activities. Winning a coed volleyball tournament was Mrs. Lucy Hill ' s Over the Hill Gang. It took students no time at all to get the school spirit. October activities include academics and communit Students took a running start in aca- demics and other interests in October. Paul Erb, Kay Hendricks, Ptiillip Kurzner, Deborah Laningham, Eric Sisson and Jennifer Wade became National Merit Semi-finalists, compet- ing with more than 655,000 students in about 16,600 schools nationwide. Homecoming honors were dis- pensed at half time of the Ray-King game October 15 Pam Hewlett was crowned King ' s third Homecoming Queen and Jane Andrus as Football Sweetheart. Cele- bration of the victory ended in the caf- etorium with a dance. The first mass student council meet- ing was held the eighteenth with each class meeting in their respective assemblies. All gripes were aired and future meetings were announced. The newly passed twenty-sixth amendment permits the voting eligibili- ty of all eighteen-year-olds in federal elections. Deputized assistants regis- tered students meeting age require- ments. Concern for surfing privileges off Bob Hall Pier encouraged surfers from King to attend an open meeting at the county commissioners court October 12. Surfers and fishermen were in dis- pute over the distance posted be- tween the pier and area designated for surfing. A petition was presented to the court by King student Laura Col- lins and signed by more than 100 stu- dents. The petition called for the privi- lege of surfing right up next to the pier, which forms the best breakers on the beach.
