The first Glee Club was begun in 1932 and was led by Mrs. Marguerite Gentry. Miss Sadie Wilson came in 1935 and was the fiist public school music teacher. She taught music in the grades and led the Glee Club. Mrs. Ma rgue rite Gentry assumed this position in 1945 when Miss Wilson left. Mrs. Bla n c h e Bullock followed Mrs. Gentry in 1957 and she served un- til 1960. Since this date there has be en no public school music teacher, and Mrs. Rebecca Moser has directed the Glee Club. Brenda Westmoreland, Penny Smith, Pat Keiger Nr-J MISS VIOLA TUTTLE The Piano Department, in the King School, was es- tablished in the fall of 1924, with Miss Viola Tuttle as the teacher. She has taught twenty-six years in the school, but not consecutively. The department has g rown tre- mendously through the years. The present enrollment is fifty-five-seven boys and forty-eight girls. The success of Miss Tuttle's teaching is reflected in many of the churches in the King community, through competent pianists and organists. We had a youthful cou- rageous Commander-in-Chief at the helm. Then, he was dead! Felled by an assassin's bullet! The tragedy plunged not only our school, but the whole world into one of its darkest hours. A strong link in our chain of democracy was broken! It would be quickly mended with tears and the influence of the things for which John Fitzgerald Kennedy worked. We can best per- petuate his memory by keeping always before us the torch of his courageous life, and the flame of his high ideals. Through these, we are assured of the perpetuity of our democracy. The men in whom this power is developed are the men who bear Responsibilities, who are leaders in enterprise, and influence Character. lt is the worlc of true education to develop this power to train the youth to be thinkers, and not mere reflectors of other men's thought.lnstead of confining their study to that which men have said or written, let students be directed to the sources of truth, to the vast fields opened for research in nature and revelation.Let them contem- plate the great facts of duty and destiny, and the mind will expand and strengthen. Instead of educated weaklings, institutions of learning may send forth men strong to think and to act, men who are masters and not slaves of circumstances, men who possess breadth of mind, clearness of thought, and the courage of their convictions. Such an education provides more than mental discipline, it provides more than physical training. lt strengthens the Character, so that truth and uprightness are not sacrificed to selfish desire or worldly ambition. lt fortifies the mind against Evil. Instead of some master passion becoming a power to destroy, every motive and desire are brought into c on form i ty to the great principles of Right. As the perfection of His character is dwelt upon, the mind is renewed, and the soul is recreated in the image of God. What education can be higher than this? What can equal it in value? On December 6, 1963 the students of King High School presented a program entitled Our Sweetheart in which they honored Miss Kathleen Hall. Miss Hall left King after seven years of working with us. At the end of 1963, Miss Hall completed fifty years of teaching. In the program we had a chance to bring back happy memories and to tell Miss Hall how much her thoughtful- ness, inte rest, and helping hand have meant to us. A representative from each graduating class since Miss Hall had been at King came to pay her a special tribute. The highlight ca m e when Miss Hall was crowned our sweet- heart. Billy Long and Harrell Smith added warmth as they performed her favorite songs. The program was concluded as Miss Hall was escorted out of the auditorium and to a reception by Gerald Smith. Though Miss Hall is no longer teaching at King, she is still working for us as she helps to get the new schools ready by planning our classes for next year. South Stokes High School ' 5 ., -1 cgfcn ' South High School Stokes County, N. C. Ne xt year our students will join the students of Pinnacle, Pine Hall, and Walnut Cove at our new, consolidated high school, South Stokes. 140 Autographs 75911.
