Popular Bobbie Jean Barr Robert Newsome Margaret Faye Baker Carl Soufhem Moxt Likely To Marry Friendlieft CLASS HISTORY In the year 1948, sixty-four timid boys and girls were directed to room number 4 and the Home Economics building with Miss Burtie Carroll and Mrs. Howell Patterson as home room teachers. We lost nine out of our sixty-four that year. Wayne Hall, K. T. Gillespie, Bobby Cromer, Jack Cromer, Ina Merritt, Margaret Browder, and Ray Sands quit school for unknown reasons. Virginia Martin and Treva Webster were the first to stop for marriage. The next year we were sophomores, and we were still in separate groups. Mrs. Pauline Dun- can and Mr. Odell Neal were our home room teachers. We were very proud to have Billy Bob Barr, Betty Newsome, and Emodean Nance make the basketball teams. Leo Holder, Patsy Boyles, Alvin Hill, Betty Newsome, and Virginia Payne dropped out of school. Our junior year meant the meeting of two separate classes in one large habpy class. We were now in the Library with Mrs. Clifton Stevens as our home room teacher. Before long. Bobby Gene Lawson, Janie Venable, Margie Duggins and Norma Jean Griffin had left us. Francis Spainhour and Mozelle Rutledge did not return from their sophomore year-the reason-matrimony. Mary Anderson Booe entered Salem Academy to continue her studies. Gaynell Bennett, a new student was gladly accepted by the Juniors. The Junior class sponsored the annual Halloween Carnival in October, 1950. to raise money for the junior-Senior Banquet. It was a great success, with lots of hard work-but a lot of fun also. Geraldine Moser of our class was elected queen for the second year. One of the high lights in our life occurred on the night of May 4. 1951. All dressed up in formal clothes, the Juniors. along with the Seniors and the faculty, gathered on the Balinese Roof of the Robert E. Lee Hotel in Winston-Salem for a banquet. Entertainment was presented bv the Dorminy Studio. Everyone wanted to learn to dance afterward! Everyone got home safely as far as we know-at least they all showed up at school the next day. When Commencement time rolled around C. A. Hunsucker. Bobbie jean Barr, Marv Lee Petree, Junior Grabs, and Annie Ruth Lynch were selected as marshals. We hated to see the Seniors go, but we were glad to take their place. The junior class party was given bv Mr. and Mrs. Bill Byrd and Mr. and Mrs. Golden Baker at the Y. M. C. A. Camp. Everyone had a grand time. Then in September, 1951. we at last took our seats in the Senior room with Mrs. Nell Voss as our teacher. Our class had then decreased to thirty-five who were looking forward to graduating in the Spring of 1952. We presented our Senior Plav in November in the King High School Auditorium. We selected a three-act comedy entitled No Foolin'. Our grade parents, Mr, and Mrs. Bill Byrd and Mr. and Mrs. Coley Hunsucker, gave us a Christmas party at the King American Legion Hut. Everyone enjoyed the fun and refreshments and seemed satisfied with their gifts. When we returned from the Christmas holidavs, we found that Marv Lee Perree had married Glenn Tuttle. It wasn't long until Geraldine Moser had changed her name by marrying Wayne Hall. The Senior Class received an invitation from Elon College in February asking us to attend their Anniual Senior Day. A group of 29 seniors along with Mr. Felts left on Wednesday. February 6 for their exciting trip to Elon. We arrived a little while before lunch, and began touring the Campus. We had a lot of free time to inspect college life and then we are supper in the dining hall. That night we attended the ball game between Appalachian and Flon. We left the College at 9:45 p. m. and around 11:30 p. m. a tired bunch of Seniors stepped off the bus in King. At the time of this writing, most of our four high school years are historv. only 3 short time remains until we shall receive our diplomas and vo our separate wavs. Then will renwafn onl memories of our ha t' h ' ' f y ppy imes spent etc together. Thus we part, all with high hopes for the uture. f,' M Wivmh 5, X QAM SENIOR SNAPSHOTS !7j,93L!6y J J 6 'L777' A425 H CM cp,-M 44,193 f N- , VL 5' V , V I ' :Q V , A arf My 4- f -A 1 , A 1, Q kj? Early in the fall, at the Stokes County Fair, we sponsored several school projects. Six blue ribbons came to our school. In November, we were asked by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary to place special emphasis on November as Americanism month. During our Americanism Religious Week. we conducted devotional for the high school in the auditorium each morning. We sponsored a special Armistice Day program on the Monday after Armistice Day, paying special tribute to World War I and Il veterans, who were out guests that morning. We developed a system for grading rooms and each grade, in turn, is responsible for cleaning the auditorium. A committee was appointed to keep the first-aid room clean and attractive. We also have a committee to keep the office clean. We sponsored a Talent Show in November. We made about 3240, with which we have bought a public address system for the auditorium. The athletic committee has decorated the gym with posters and school colors for every game. They put forth much effort to get publicity for our ball games. They have also kept attractive bulletin boards in the gym. The cheerleaders have helped us with our no smoking and sportmanship problems, and we think the effort put forth was very successful. The athletic committee also sponsored a special program at our first ball game to introduce players and officials. This committee also sold ads to two local business concerns for money that was used to have schedules of our basketball games printed. We organized a hall monitor committee, but with the grades and the high school using doors at all times of the day, it is very difficult for this committee to operate smoothly. We can't say that this committee has been too successful. The publicity committee sends our school news, King Kracksf' to the county papers each week. This committee also keeps the hall bulletin boards up to date and attractive. At the beginning of school a committee was appointed to work out a plan for Chapel each Tuesday morning. Each grade was in charge one week for the first semester. The last semester was planned for clubs and organizations. During the week of Christmas, the Council asked for a few minutes in the home rooms each morning for devotional. The Council decided that all who averaged 95 and above should be exempted from mid-term exams. We were very pleased that this was approved by our faculty and principal. The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary presented an American Flag and pole to our school. The Council assisted with the presentation ceremonies on March 14. We are now planning a Home-Coming Day, which will be April 5. We plan to help the Alumni form an association. In years to come they will plan the events when they want them. Ar the present writing our columns at the entrance of school grounds have not been started- but we do have a promise they will be finished by Home-Coming Day. Our Council voted to join the N. A. S. C. We have received several helpful magazines from the National Association and a beautiful certificate of membership. Several of the Council officers are looking forward to the Western District, North Carolina Student Council Congress at Forest City, April 18 and 19. Wfe plan to again sponsor the May Day Program the first day of May. Our Countil and school has been honored this year-O. O. Grabs, jr., out Council president, han served as president of the first Stokes County Schools Student Council. He has performed his many duties well, and we are very proud to have served on various projects with him. The Student Council wishes junior much success. Ably assisted by our sponsor, Mrs, Newsom, we, as representatives of our student body, have attempted to co-operate with pupils and faculty in promoting more interest and better school spirit among pupils and better relationship and understanding among all school personnel. Eight players were missing from last yea.r's squad. Other teams in the county were rejoicing that six-foot Sally Meadows had graduated, along with our other two fast starting forwards-Lorraine Robertson and Nell Baker, and our tallest guard, Phoebe Manring. In addition, Rachel Burge, Sybil Sizemore, Peggy Hall, and Norma jean Griffin were gone from last yea.r's reserves. Led by Ernodean Nance, who was playing guard for her third consecutive year, and Edna Newsom, who shared first team guard honors with Mary Ruth johnson last year, the guard situa- tion was soon well in hand. They were joined by Melva Sue Boyles, who played like a veteran although it was her first year on the squad. Margaret Booze, playing her second year led the reserve guards. Doris Edwards, Faye Sizemore, and Anne Phillips donned the Red and Black for the first time. Many times the guards were assisted by Mary Ruth Johnson Know a forwardl. Her height and rebounding helped greatly when we met up with a tall forward or a hook-shot artist. These girls consistently held opposing teams to relatively low scores. You couldn't ask for a better set of guards! For a while our forwards suffered from first year-itis, because practically all of them were inexperienced. Mozell Tuttle and Grace Westmoreland saw limited action last year. Newcomer Nancy Jo Boyles, shooting left-handed, proved to be the highest scorer of the team. Mary Ruth Johnson did well in the pivot and added to the score with her hook-shot. The third spot at forward was sometimes filled by Mozell Tuttle, whose specialty was long shots: sometimes bv Grace Westmoreland, whose height aided her in 'udropping them in from almost any angleg and some- times by freshman Mary Edith Smith, a scrappy player that shows much promise. Doris ,lane Barr, an excellent passer, and Pee Wee Burrow, another good set-shot, rounded out the team. To make a long story short-after a slow start due partly to stage fright. these girls wound up the season by winning the Stokes County Championship for the sixth consecutive year. Three members of the team-Emodean Nance, Mary Ruth Johnson, and Nancy jo Boyles made the All- County Tournament Team. Emodean Nance and Mozell Tuttle are the only Seniors in our squad of fourteen. So, we give fair warning-Look out, future teams, for the Red and Black from King! The team would like to thank Martha Smith. manager, for a job well done. Orr thanks also to Mrs. Newsom, scorekeeper: Bobbie lean Barr. assistant scorer' and Nr, Kye, time keeper. Our deep appreciation for the splendid work of the cheerleaders, led by June Sisk. To Mrs. Voss-our coach: The team of 1952. the teams of all past years. and the basketball fans-wish to express their gratitude for hours so unselfishly spent in reaching the funflamentals of basketball and sportmanship to the girls' basketball teams of King High School, With her faith in the girls, her patience. and her thorough knowledge of the game, we can easily understand why we are so proud to be The Stokes County Champions for the sixth consecutive year! BOYS'BASKETBALL Our boys? basketball team this year has really soared like the EAGLE for which our team is named, averaging over 65 points per game, for all games played. From last year's team we missed Roy Lee Harris, one of the best b ll l 1 King, if not the bestg Dean Robertson, Orbin Kiser, and Bill Wans-ill ljirigegallviullagirs azlvhzli helped make our last years team great, had graduated, as had reserves Doyle Cromer Sherrill Gray Hall, and Boonie Whitman. From the old team only Bobby joe Harris remailned. l Y However, the reserves played almost as much as the varsity during last season. and that ex- perience really helped. Time came for -Mr. Neal to pick the team. Bobby Joe Harris, Billy Bob Barr, C. A. Hunsucker, Dan Nance, and Wimp Holder got the nod for first team They were pushed however b lunio grabs, Dicky Newsom, Robert Robertson, Wesley Hunsucker, Dennis Hartgrove, ahdylviarvirli entry. These boys proved themselves good ball handlers, and excellent shots from almost any angle on the floor. In many games their percentage for long shots was better than for crip shots. They usually scored almost at will. Mr. Neal could run in all the reserves and still have a high score. Our boys were undefeated during the regular season. They lost a March of Dimes game to a strong Welcome team, who went on to win the State A Race. They also lost to Draper by a l point margin in a State Race game. For the fifth time in the last six years our boys brought home the Stokes County Trophy. This fact gives evidence that our teams have certainly done well, and have been well coached. Where else could you find a coach with the know-how, patience, and ability of Mr. O. T. Neal? Although we lose Seniors C. A. Hunsucker, who was our highest scorer this seasong Billy Bob Barr, who with C. A. made the County All-Star Teamg Junior Grabs, Dicky Newsom, and Dennis Hartf grove, we predict for 1952-53 another strong team for King.
