As we, the Senior Class of 1949, planned this second edition of KING'S CABIN we naturally thought of the Forty-Niners of a century ago. We, like them, are striving for our pot of gold, the successful completion of our Senior year in high school. The printing of this annual is a great step forward in our quest. The editing of this annualwould not have been possible without the endless patience of our teachers and sponsor. Our many thanks to them for everything that they have contributed to this volume of KING'S CABIN. N 4 .Sap 0I'l'l0I e5 In September of 1948, 43 students entered the doors of King High School for their tenth' year. Most of us were thinking that we were going to have a good time and learn our lessons with little or no effort--Biology soon changed our minds! At first we were all in Room Two withMr. O. T. Neal as our teacher. Since we were very crowded, eight of the girls were sent down to the commercial room with Mrs. Newell Newsom. During the year we have lost JoAnn Boyles, Eunice Wall, and Margie Newsom, who took that great step into matrimony. Billy Gibson quit for unknown reasons, Sophia Mae Tilley moved to Germanton. We welcomed .Tack James back from Pennington Gap, Virginia. We elected the following class officers: James Smith, Presidentg Sherrill Gray Hall, Vice President: Melvin Southern, Secretaryg Sally Meadows, Treasurer. We elected Mr. and Mrs. Paul Meadows and Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Southern grade parents. Mrs. Meadows sent us a cake which was enjoyed by everyone. We are looking forward to a party which our grade parents are planning for us. On the day we got out for Christmas holidays, the girls prepared lunches and the boys bought our drinks and we, along with our teacher, had a wonderful indoor picnic in the gymnasium. At last basketball season rolled around. We were proud that our boys won the high school tournament. Our girls did a great job but lost to the ninth grade. A few of our boys and girls made the school team. You can be sure we were right there rooting for them. That is what you might have heard had you attended any of the games that our girls played this year. The year was a very successful one for the girls. They played eighteen games during the regular season, winning all but one. Not only did they have a successful season, but they won the Stokes County Tournament for the third year in succession. In the Journal-Sentinel Tournament both teams went to the semi-finals, the girls losing to Walkerton 31-2.8, and the boys losing to Leaksville 40-32. Doris Kiser, Peggy Loggins, Betty Taylor, Minnie Frances Tedder, Betty Meadows, players, and Johnnie Slate, manager, are Seniors this year, but even though we lose them, there will be other girls to take their place next year. We cannot give the team all the credit. If it hadnot been for the training that their coach, Mrs. Voss, gave them and her patience when they did something wrong, they would not have gone as far as they did. We have been proud of our team this year, so we say to all the girls on the team, Well done, girls. To Mrs. Voss we can say from the bottom of our hearts, You deserve the best of everything. 19 SUMMARY OF GAMES PLAYED King Opponents Nancy Reynolds Lawsonville Francisco Pinnacle Germanton Francisco Pinnacle Lawsonville Rural Hall Walnut Cove Nancy Reynolds Shoals Germanton Walnut Cove Rural Hall Old Richmond COUNT Y TOURNAMENT King Opponents 47 Pinnacle 22. 41 Nancy Reynolds 26 37 Pine Hall flfinalsj 2.7 JOURNAL-SENTINEL TOURNAMENT King Opponents Z9 Stony Point Zl 46 Denton 36 Z8 Franklin 27 19 White Plains 18 Z8 Walke rtown 31 Sandy Ridge Old Richmond Anne Lewis, Chief, Harold Gravitt, Cleo Bennett, Max Baker, Crow McGee. Neal, won 15 games and lost 3 during regular season play. Teamwork and sportsmanship have been very outstandingly displayed by every boy on the team. The teamwill lose to Ole Man Graduation five Seniors. They are Wesley Brown, Arnold Moore, James Smith, Aaron Holder, and Johnny Newsome. However, the rising Junior Class, from all appearances, contains enough material for two good teams. Nevertheless, Aaron Lefty Ho1der's hook shot and Johnny Newsome's defensive methods will be conspicuous by their absence. Our boys were crowned Stokes County champions after winning from a smart Germanton five. The Journal-Sentinel Tournament was an interesting one. Our bbys played their way into the semi-finals, losing to Leaksville, who won the Tournament. Mr. Neal is to be congratulated on the fine basketball team which we, the fans, have so thoroughly enjoyed seeing play this year.
