'x KIMBERLY HIGH SCHOOL 9 D1 CAT! 0 E v DEDICATION We hereby dedicate this first edition of the Kimet to Mrs. J. R. Gerritts, the former Miss Winifred Lynch of our High School Staff. Through her efforts, eleven years of faithful and unceasing service, we have seen many developments and achievements in the student body, and many laurels given Kimberly in the Dramatic Department, of which she was the head. Mrs. Gerritts' home was in New Richmond, Wisconsin. There she attended the parochial school. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree at River Falls' Teachers College where she majored in English and minored in History. During various summers, she attended summer school at the University of Minnesota. The students of the Kimberly High School regret the loss of such a capable person, but wish her much success in her new role in life. QYNOOL BOUPD Joseph T. Doerfler Clarence J. Fiewener Joseph H. During the six years he has been with us, our school has become one of the most respected institutions. We are fortunate to have such a fine leader as director of our school and through his ambitious efforts, an addition was annexed to the former building. Mr. Gerritts attended grade and high school at Little Chute Wisconsin. At Lawrence College, Appleton, Wisconsin he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. With a scholarship he attended the University of Illinois in 1920-21, and in the summer of '68 he went to George Washington University, Washington D. C. His teaching experiences have included nine years at Union Free High School, Oxford, Wisconsin, four years as chemistry instructor at Marinette High School and six years as supervising principal at our school. We appreciate his efforts in making the function of our school that which com ands notable mention. To him-our thanks. 4 3 F Elizabeth A. Joe Van Thull was chosen as president by this group of hashful but enthusiastic freshmen. Throughout the school year. these freshmen, just like many other freshmen, listened in silence to the DOOSUIIEZ and Jeefiflg of the upper classmen. There were only forty-three sophisticated sophomores who re- turned to Kimberly High School in 1936 to resume their studies. Those who did not answer to roll call this year were: George Vanden Hoogen, Joe Van Hout, James Williams, Martin Vydeven, Iva Ven Dinter, June Thein, Johanna Vermeeren, Bernice Wiedenhaupt, Katherine Vander Pas, and Martha Gerrits. Ann Van Zeeland decided to continue her career on the opposite side of the river and transferred to Little Chute. This ambitious group of sophomores chose as their president,John Dictus. Ralph Howard joined the sophomore CLHSS, but did not remain the entire term. John Van Sambeek decided that a naval career would be more beneficial and educational to him and subsequently he joined the Navy. The junior year proved to be very successful and interesting, the only disappointment being that eight more students decided to withdraw from school to pursue different occupations and ambitions. We lost Robert Busch, Harold De Bruin, Herman De Leeuw, Frank Hubers, Marie Stals, Anastasia Wyngard, Ambrose Lemmers, and Tom Walton. The great event, which gave these juniors so much prestige, was the Junior Promenade. For this event, the gymnasium took on all the aspects of an ocean liner. Robert L8 Barge was admiral of this liner, and he chose Elayne Busch as his mistress. During the school term Leroy Kumbier and Alyce Weiss joined the junior class. Robert La Berge presided over all the class activities, as president. September 1938, 59 dignified students returned to complete their high school careers. Most of these students returned with the idea of making the most of their last year at Kimberly I Robert La Berge was reelected pres1dent.A Many of these students have gained recognition in one or more of the extra curricular activities. On May 51, 1939, this dignified and intelligent group of thirty-nine students in their caps and gowns received their diplomas, and thus their High School career came to an end. QXASS PROPHESY On arriving from Chicago by train I found Leroy Kumbier working slowly but surely at his position as a depot agent. K taxl driven by Jgmgg Lynch who now has a few taxies running in Kimberly, brought me to Hotel Kimberly, whose proprietor is Victor Pieters. After eating the delicious food for a couple days, I Eetermlned to find out who the chef was, and to my surprise I found that it was Joe Van Thull. To celebrate Bob La Berge's election as President of Kimberly a dance was held at the hote . Music was furnished by R1ch1e's Orches- tra who at this time is tops in the Fox River Valley. The maestro was known better by the name Ricardo Boogaard ten years ago. Among his musicians are the Dictus Brothers, Henry and John with their clarinet and saxaphone. The soloist is Elayne Busch, who left Benny Goodmans' Orchestra to keep this engagement at Kimberly. Elmer Vanden Boogaard was honorary bartender for the evening. He has his own tavern up the valley a ways. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. William Wachtendonk. Mrs. Wachtendonk was the former Ann Van Daalwyk. William runs the Kim- berly Dairy. June Van U ke and Benedict Weyenberg have just announced their engagement. Jigs has been employed as a nurse at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, while her fiance is employed as a foreman at the Kimberly Clark Mill. Friday evening, I attended a basketball game at Kimberly High School. Kimberly won, and I soon found out why,-because Driek Van Qyke is the coach. The HBH team, which has been very successTuIT'was coached by Hank Langenberg. On buying my ticket, I found Celeste Jose hs in the ticket booth. She is a member of the faculty, of course, the commercial teacher. Upon inquiring, I found James Fiewe er was principal of the school, and his secretary was Gertrude Van Cuyg. Other me bers of the faculty were Elaine Ouellette tEe Kindergarten teacher and Doroth Vanden Boo aard wEo Holds the position of School Nurse. From DoroEhy,zl'Tound oufg that Lucy Kokke was head nurse at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. On Saturday, I received an invitation to go through the mill. In the office I found Lorraine Schumacher working as billing clerk under Jack Coates, the shlpping clerk. Mar aret Thein is also employed in tHe office. At lunch time, I went to the mIII restaurant and found little Priscilla Schnese and Esther Mars working as head cooks. There were only two other people whom I'knew and they were James Gaffney who was head loader and Lawrence De Groot who was an eIecErIEIEHT' In the business section of Kimberly, we find FlOZd Ho fens er er running a butcher shop. Charles Vande: Sanden has opened a anc ng school. Lyle La enber , now Has Els own newspaper, nThe Kimberly Gazette J .E0rra ne an Berkel is part owner of a small department store with Teresa UacEE5n. Yes, YOU did it ..... not your parents, - - YOU graduated from high school andrieached a mile- stone in your life. CONGRATULATIONS! As a matter of fact, YOU are responsible for anything YOU did, do, or will do. That ninety in the algebra test - YOU did it. Being a student -of-the-month candidate- YOU did it. Serving a detention for talking too much in class- YOU did it. Future success and happiness for you may depend upon your realizing that ONLY YOU are responsible for your actions. The contemporary American poet Everett W. Hull, in his poem entitled Search Yourself , wrote: If life is not what you wish it to be, If labor of days brings naught of reward, If night brings only dread of the morrow- Then search yourself for the answer. If friends seem to fail you when you need them most, If smiles disappear and frowns take their place, Alf laughter is lost and tears crowd the eyes - Then search yourself for the answer. lf doubt rules your day and fear enters in, If truth becomes ill and honesty fails, If all of your world seems cloudy and drear- Then search yourself for the answer. You will find that happiness comes from within, And that to have friends you must friendly be, Today is your day, make every hour count - For the answer is found in yourself. The Communication or Television Department gives students the opportu- nities to be involved in television pro- ductions for cablecasting, including a student-produced news program and television theater. The many various as- pects of the department include both on-the-scene and behind-the-scene du- ties such as that of sound variation and even that of rolling the camera. Students perform many functions with other students and learn to develop their skills both written and orally in front of live audiences, as seen in the photos located above and also to the right. Special guest artists from the com- munity serve as consultants and short- term teachers. The main emphasis is placed on individual needs in a studio- type setting. This program is recommended for all students with a sense of creative ability, of inner talent, and to those who feel that their contribution to The Arts Pro- gram at The Magnet School will not only be a benefit but moreover be a reward. 1 Y ', S I I-vi ' 1 sf l as ' ' nder the direction of Mrs, Dolores Cassilli and Mr, Michael variety oftelevision and radio programming. This program gives students the op- portunities for involvement in ballet, modern and jazz. The students will par- ticipate in performances in addition to regular classwork. The dancers will take part in doing some choreography as well as performances on the Arts Magnet news broadcast, when appropriate. Students learn different forms and styles of dance. The daily procedure usually and most always begins with a warm-up exercise and the instructor may perform a routine in which the dancers may have to learn. Stretching and keeping limber are two of the many goals a dancing performer may have to set for the further development of their dance career. Fluency, creativity, and style are the three important elements of the person- al outlook ofa Harrisburg Arts Magnet Dance student. The instructor of the program is a professional dancer who has had vari- ous encounters in performances of ex- tra-ordinary and superior dance techniques and forms. There stu- dents learned basic principles and procedures of design. One assignment was to construct a small, model corner-section ofa house. This was a part of the total drafting curriculum requirements. The in- structor ofthe class was Mr. Edward Crossley. One of his objectives was to teach his students basic residential framing techniques and procedures through architectural drafting. Drafting classes were available to all students at the John Harris campus. The drafting classes were divided into three lev- els: beginner, intermediate, and for third year stu- dents, advanced. Two students from an Industrial Drafting Technology ll class emphasized that their career ambitions had been influenced by the draft- ing course. Mike Cousins and Brian Carson stressed that the class really taught them about the fundamentals of drafting used in a technological society. Both young men were looking into the fu- ture with high hopes. Good luck! TOP: Brian Mosley BOTTOM: Brian Carlson TOP LEFT. NEXT PAGE: Michael Cousins . ,AV f to 'll 9. A Q' ig? COMP TER TECH OLGGY ne of the newest and most out- standing features of our Industrial - 5 Education Department was the new color model CAD system. A CAD is an advanced computer system which stands for Computer-Aided Drafting andf or Design. The school year 1984-85 was a highlight for our campus and for our student body with the installation of the new computer CAD system in the Industrial Arts Draft- ing Technology class. The CAD system is a unique computer system which used high technology applications to design and plot drawings. The system components are: Ap- ple Ile microcomputer, Taxan high-densi- ty - high resolution color monitor, six-pen color plotter, dot matrix printer, and asso- ciated system software. Mr. Crossley, the instructor of Drafting Technology com- mented, There is not only a need to teach CAD in the high school drafting programs, but it also must be considered standard preparation for post-secondary drafting, engineering, and design programs. There- fore, our goals for teaching CAD must be an informative overview along with some specific hands-on learning experiences. A CAD system is no more than the 'modern draftsperson's and designer's tool, ba- sics are first. ' As of next fall a new course called Computer-Aided Drafting will be of- fered to all students. The major ob- jectives of the course will be: l. To develop students' skill and pride in their UF THE FU RE 4:,,,,f.,e. . ., 5, rift .as l i- i :ii E E - i - ! D drawings. 2. To provide students with the ability to reason and think logically with their hands and minds. 3. Through interac- tion instill the knowledge that each student is a part of the computer programming. On February 8, l985, a seminar was held by a representative of Chessell-Robo- com Company tlvlanufacturer of our CAD systemj to demonstrate the operation of computer design. Several inquiring specta- tors, Mr. Schrader fYearbook Advisorj, Mr. Thompson tAssistant Yearbook Advi- sorj, and Mr. Crossley tlndustrial Arts Drafting lnstructorl, along with the draft- ing class, all observed operations for per- forming a variety of designs on the computer and color plotter. The plotter drew a technically flawless outline of a house floor plan. Another brief seminar was held on May 3, 1985, and this time the entire yearbook staff was present to view another intriguing operation of the computer. A salesman from Herff-Jones Yearbook Company demonstrated a new way of drawing lay- outs for yearbook spreads. This new meth- od of designing layouts makes it much easier to compose a layout spread for a yearbook page. As soon as the Fall of l985 it is very likely that this new disk may be available. So, to all you who want comput- er education, here will be a great opportu- nity to broaden your skills. As a result, the CAD system is a step forward into the future for students ofthe .Iohn Harris campus. Timmy Moon Nichole Hamilton LaTonyu Ingram Edith Cook - 1 1 ww Ts i- .: fx :Qi 1 f mug. Despite their overall record, the Cougars came out with big wins against Bishop McDevitt and No. 2 ranked Cumberland Valley. But the most rewarding was the win against arch-rival Steel High. This defeat was the first in Roller territory since 1973. Seniors such as Mid Penn All-Star John Gilcrist, Lonnie McCraw, and Kevin Holland led a great offense. James Easter, Kenny Johnson, and Steve Roberts aided the devastating defense to proclaim rank of second in the area. The team put forth long hours of diffi- cult practices, personal sacrifices, and ded- ication to the sport. Monica Flint is considered the best female Cross-Country runner in the Harrisburg area and placed in the top twelve at the Mid-Penn Confer- ence Meet. Waddie Freeman proved himself to be the Number l Cross-Country runner over the past two seasons. Considering the fact that it was Coach Crummel's first year, he managed to do an excellent job with the students who came out for the sport. Coach Crummel was ca- pable of building a Cross-Country dynas- ty's beginning this year which should continue to emerge in the years ahead. . ,ra 2 4 F We deserve this brcuk! THIRD Ms. Deborah Reeves Coach The fall of 84-85 brought over twenty enthusiastic girls out for field hockey. This sometimes rough but exciting sport held a keen interest for those girls. There was also the dedicated coaching of Ms. Deborah Reeves who played field hockey herself. The season got off on a late start. We had to practice very hard. The girls were dedicated to playing the game. The captains of the team were Bernadette Tyler and Janet Sinclair. The two co-captains were Tammy Stewart and Teresa Green. They set an example for the new players by passing on what they knew and their experience from the game. Even though we lost games we didn't let our spirits down. We always raised our spirits to try to win the next game. 3 i i t ' ' F 'h' d 3.Llzgocstothe net serve. Because without Vicki Posey, who didn't know whether to play field hockey or tennis, and Diane Pritchard, who was busy with her job, nobody really expected the team to become a threat. The team had a lot of trouble with powerhouses such as Hershey and Palmyra as a result. ' ' nder the direction of second year coach ll Carl Rachelson the Cougars began the - f- season mentally and physically optimis- tic. The ratings for the first game had our oppo- nents picked over us. Suprisingly the Cougars came out on top. All eyes were fixed on seniors Billy Simpson, Terry Williams, Joe Holmes, and junior stars Vernon Brooks and Harold Anderson. Little did the fans know about the secret weapons waiting to be revealed. Soon after the season began new names were heard. Kenny Green helped out both on offense and defense and 6'-5 sophmore Du- jaune Greene, shocked the enemy with some devastating moves under the boards and from the outside. Still other assets for the Cougars were juniors Darryl Robinson and Dennis Early. These two also contributed when they were needed the most. There were also other ball handlers that added to the Cougar success. Byron Jones, Du- jauns Greene, and super sophmore Harold Brantley made everyoneis heart jump by their performance on the varsity and J. V. teams. Although the Cougars finished the regular season with a I0-12 record, they still had a very productive season. Even our arch-rivals had a hard time denying the Cougars' fantastic ability. I am sure anyone would agree that 1985 was a year for Coach Rachelson and the Varsity Cou- gars to remember. NATIONA THE PIAN SOCIETY ' ' his organization is one ofthe smaller orga- H nizations of our school but it is full of tal- - - ent, skill, sweat and tears. In order to be a thespian you must accumulate points through participating in theatre or drama- related projects such as, assisting with the stage crew, helping to promote one of the school's drama- fmusical productions, or maintaining a part in one of the school's productions. Being a member of the National Thespian Soci- ety has its advantages. A thespian member receives a year's subscription to Drama Magazine. The Thespian Society also has a scholarship for those who want to pursue a career in the field of drama and arts. FRONT ROW, L. TO R.: Lincoln Wilson, Toni Ridgeway, Susan Haffley, Paul Howarth. I , 35 OTHERS BENEFIT FROM HER TRAINING Washington, D.C., Commander Lewis has received numerous awards and achievement certificates for her outstanding academic and leader- ship ability. One of her greatest awards is her latest achievement, becoming N..l.R.O.T.C.'s first female commander. With this achievement many responsi- bilities have entered into the life of Com- mander Lewis. Her occupation requires her to keep the unit fBattalionJ organized and to also make sure that N.J.R.O.T.C. is properly represented in the school. Her newly acclaimed title requires her to fulfill such responsibilities as regulating native of our nation's capital, the surrounding area of the unit. She also has to evaluate her fellow peers overall ac- ademic and physical appearance through- out the semesters. The Naval Junior Reserves Training Corp has helped the Commander tremen- dously with other parts of her curriculum such as science and math. Under the influence of her mother fone of the first females in Pennsylvania to en- list in the State's National Guard and ob- tain a position as a Sergeant in the U.S. Armyj, Commander Lewis became inter- ested in the military and her first step of pursuit was to enroll in the N..l.R.O.T.C. program. Starting off as a private seaman's re- cruit, Commander Lewis became a recipi- ent of the highest honor that a student can receive from the course. This year she was awarded five gold bars which are displayed on her uniform. Commander Lewis' future goals are to pursue a career as an electrical engineer. She hopes that N..l.R.O.T.C. will be of some assistance to her with the success of her goals, maturity, responsibility, and the enhancement of her academic ability. Through her sister Leslie's beliefs in ex- cellence, the Commander gained the in- centative to always succeed.
