Our most vivid recollection ot Kimberley will be the strong spirit that was ever present throughout our years at K.S. We will also remember the material things that were in' tiuenced by the spirit. We were happy to welcome Judy Burns and Nancy Ferris to our class in September. With the commencing ot school there followed such a whirl ot studies and activities that it is al- most impossible to recall them all as our senior year drciws to a close. Getting into the swing ot things, we had a terrific time preparing our Fall Frolic skit. Attending the Father-Daughter Dinner was something we cannot forget, along with the sadness which came when we realized it was our last one. In November the Karnival was o tremendous success under the leadership ot June Dallery. Then came the magic night ot the Tinsel Boll. We were brought back sharp- ly to our senses by S.A.T.'s in January ond the College Board Achievement Tests in March. Just one week after College Boards, however, came the Spring Prom. How we loved it ol- though it was our lost one! Suddenly Moy Day was upon us, tollowed by college acceptances, ond then the inevitable, graduation. We shall never forget our senior year, which was enhanced so greotlv bv memorable little things, Shall we ever forget Nancy A. organizing those neat porties, Lou, Mart, Judy, and Pat playing those tense bridge gomes ot lunch, Linda A. octing in the K.A. play, Betsy B. wearing her West Point garter, Di encourag- ing the Lees with such spirit, Margie pleading for class dues, Anne B. iourneying into New York frequently, Sally frantically snapping pic- tures, Helen clutching in English closs, Betsy C. giving her all tor the yearbook, June swearing w 1-.,, ,,g7 1:f ,-f'fl3:..4 ? 7' FIRST ROW, left to right: Burns, Harvey, Braddock, Schoonmaker, Baldanza, Cole, Haskell, McCormick. SECOND ROW: Gilman, Williamson, Almgren, Bobst, Rhoades, Worsley, Grosse never to cut her hair, Kathy tidying up the locker room, .lean painting posters, Joan skiing every chance she got, Nancy F. working for Smith, Gail calling class meetings, Nancy G. impressing us with her big words, Carol Jo leading the school honorably, Loclcey playing the piano, Penny dissecting an earthworm, Mary Ann and Wendy struggling to pay for the yearbook, Linda M. announcing Red Cross meetings, Anne Mc. inspiring the Glee Club, Mary getting a B on her French exam, Gin- ger growing her hair, Carol S. presiding over Art Club meetings, Sue not talking in Glee Club, and Margo yearning for her driver's license? It is said that the senior year is unforget- table, and no one is able to believe this more readily than the seniors themselves. We shall now all go our own ways, but we shall never forget the friends we have made at Kimberley, the experiences we have shared, and the spirit that has guided us. A year later JOAN EBERSTADT joined Di in the second grade, and it might be added that these two are the only members of the old school left, that is, the old Plymouth Street School. As second and third graders, they enjoyed such activities as acting in the big second and third grade plays, hiding under desks, and putting thumb tacks on teachers' chairs. As third graders they especially anticipated the fourth grade, when they would learn to speak French fIuentlyI' enough so that no one could understand them, As fourth graders, they soon realized that Rome, or rather, that a romance language wasn't built, or learnt, in a day, now as seniors, too, they are still aware of that fact. It was not till the sixth grade that the class really began to expand. LINDA ALMGREN, BETSY BARNEY, and JUNE DALLERY were all very welcome additions. The class became dilettantes with an insatiable interest in singing, playing the marimba, acting in plays and finger painting in art class, where their names placed high on the Magpie List instead of the honor roll. The seventh grade was a carefree year, when dancing school and the ability to climb in and out of the windows of room 202 were the requisites for social success. MARGIE BROWN, hailing from Washington, D, C., entered the class that year. The Fall Frolics was an exciting first for the class, and they were enthusiastic working on their Red Hen skit, which didn't even place. Slightly bloody, but unbowed, they had much confidence in their skit the next year. On this occasion they performed the seven stages of lite for a Kimberley girl, ranging from the intrepid first grader to the insecure senior. Although no prize was capped, the performance was a tremendous moral victory. NANCY ADAMS by now had skipped seventh grade to ioin the notoriously full-of- ioie de Vivre class. The class was iso- lated in room 244, far from all other activity, since they were the cause of an excess of noise. Slamming desks, opening windows as for as possible, and screaming loud choruses of Ronnie fan arbitrary name engraved on one of the desksj to the tune of I've Told Every Little Starl' figured largely in the daily routine of the class. However, under this veneer of a gay, mad life lurked the more serious aspect of frequent visits to the assistant headmistress's office and detention after school. As freshmen the first glimmer of responsibility became evident. The class, enhanced by LOUISE ALFORD, KATHY D'AMBOLA, PENNY HASKELL, MART HEYDT, CAROL-JO GROSSE, SUE SCHUELER, and MARGO WILLIAMSON, assumed the tasks of heading the Junior High Student Council and paper, Although the class suffered frequently from chronic outbursts of over enthusiasm and uncontrolled hilarity, there was good reason to believe that this young and foolish class might not turn out so badly after all. This thought was made evident by the fo- that the gals were honored by being on water ballet and re ceiving national Latin and French awards. The year ended with the realization that many caprices and frivolities would have to be quelled since the students of the class were to leave the confines of room 244, whose walls incidentally still, in 1958, echo with their laughter. What adequate thanks could be expressed to Miss Bosshard, their faithful homeroom teacher who stood by them through the dark ages of grades seven through nine? Her confidence and patience were only too typical of her. In the tenth grade, ANNE MCCORMICK, ANNE BOBST, JEAN EAGLESHAM, WENDY WORSLEY, NANCY GILMAN, PAT BAL- DANZA, HELEN BRYANT, and BETSY COLE augmented the class number to twenty three. Faced first with Fall Frolics, on the night of the performance, the Sophs racked up an honor- able mention with their Gates of Paradise skit. Enioyed under 50 the elegant backdrop of the Tour Eiffel and the Champs Elysees, the Evening in Paris of that year's Father Daughter Dinner was an epicure's delight as well as an overwhelming success. Myriads of lights from candles on surprise birthday cakes sparkled up this year. The Senior Prom also was a gala affair as the girls' dates whirled them around the carousel- transformed study hall. As tenth graders, they respected the honor system, and al- though it was difficult for them to learn not to speak in study hall, they controlled their verbosity, adjusting to the system rapidly. College was becoming uppermost in their minds, and the realization that college entrance was not just a rosy glow beyond the horizon jolted them suddenly. They waved farewell to the seniors and thought their turn would never come. As juniors, however, they knew their time was coming too soon. The year wooshed by with a plethora of things to do and a paucity of time in which to do them. The class was almost complete when SALLY BRADDOCK, GAll. GARNAR, LOCKEY HARVEY, MARY ANN LAWRENCE, LINDA MICHELE, MARY O'DONNELL, GINGER RHOADES, and CAROL SCHOONMAKER joined the ranks. Voices were hoarse from cheering, after it had been an- nounced that the class of '58 finally won Fall Frolics. The skit's presentation at the Father-Daughter Dinner went very well, and thanks to the arduous dance routines, the performers worked off any pounds they might have gained at the dinner. The KOURIER was another class triumph, as was the Trinity mixerl The Under the Sea prom provided an extremely enjoyable evening too. Source themes handed in, and S.A.T.'s out of the way, the class proceeded to plan the L'il Abner class day. When the performance was given on that warm, momentous day in June, many tears were shed as the juniors said adieu to the seniors. At commencement the class of '58 stood proudly, class rings on their fingers, and green sashes around their waists, singing the Alma Mater for the first time as seniors. NANCY FERRIS and JUDY BURNS have supplied the missing pieces to the complex puzzle, fitting in perfectly to the pattern. Out of that former giggling group of gals has evolved a unified and industrious class-a class that prides itself on its spirit. They can wink at those happy-go-lucky years, and all the doubting Thomases who called them juvenile and hopeless, for this class has soared to heights never dreamed of pre- viously. In this last year, the Kimberley Karnival, because of the constant efforts of the head of the Chest, was the most successful ever experienced, with an intake of over 51000. The Glee Club, the most serious ever, proved that by paying attention and cooperating, they could accomplish much. Vespers was attributed the honor of being the most beautiful to date. Even the year- book is the bestl However, a chink in their armor has been discovered-the class loves bon voyage parties-and they realize with a sigh of relief that they are still a little young at heart. Aside from S.A.T.'s, College Boards, and source themes, they enjoyed their twelfth year to the fullest. The Princeton mixer, the Tinsel Ball, and the Senior Prom, were only a few of the highlights, Almost as important as receiving a letter of ac- ceptance from college, was receiving a letter of acceptance from Joe college. December 27 is a date circled on all their calendars, for it marks but one of the annual reunions of the class. Their varsity hockey teams have challenged those of next year to a game during Thanksgiving vacation. So you see, the class will be happy, but also very sad when they receive their diplomas in June. But they cannot be blamed for their tearful nostalgia, for as we finish reading their archives we realize that they were happy just being together. 51 5 . ate-. fx Zi- Done Mosf for K.S. , Mosf Scliool Spirif , Mosf Likely fo Succeed Besl' Mos? Amaz- ingly enough, after parading around in togas for a good ten minutes, we were overioyed to find that we had won. Later we had quite a lot of polishing-up to do in order to give the skit at the Father-Daughter Dinner! Nevertheless after many lunch meetings, we managed to give the fathers a rather unique skit. As soon as we had finished practicing for Fall Frolics, we started appointing committees, commit- tees, and more committees for the Karnival. On the day of the Karnival, we had a wonderful time selling cakes and brewing tea to earn money for the Chest. After Christmas vacation, we had exams to help keep us in a serious frame of mind for a few weeks. Then there were those Pingry, Montclair Academy, and Princeton concerts to keep our Glee Club members busy, while the Dramatic Club meme bers were diligently rehearsing lines at all lunch hours in preparation of the K.A. play. The Spring Prom was a big success and was the topic of conversation for several weeks. Throughout the year many members of the class played on athletic teams and took part in the Water Ballet. Now the year has drawn to a close. We know we will never forget all the hard work, fun and excitement that have comprised our junior year. We are anticipating an even greater senior year. SUE SCANNELL I The eighth grade has twenty one members this year. The new students are Lynn Skinner-Klee, who previously spent several years in Puerto Rico, Nancy Haviland, who attended Hillside School in seventh grade, Sara Hall, who also attended Hillside, and Holly Fry, who came to us from George lnness. One of the eighth gradels main activities this year was the planning of our Fall Frolic production entitled Commercials . Early in the year, our class decided that we were not getting enough exercise to keep our always on the go muscles in tone. So we organized our Friday afternoon activities under the supervision of Miss Dorothy McCrory. We hope everyone noticed on display the IGY booklets that we made as a special project for our General Science course. Our class party, the places we visited, and the things we saw all helped to make the eighth grade year a year for us to remember with happiness. The Father-Daughter Dinner was a thrill for us all as this was the first year we have been invited to attend. We have a great deal to look forward to now that we are in the Upper School at Kimberley. EDITH HOYT 64 ...Ri K ACTIVITIES STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council, which is composed of elected representatives and presidents of grades ten through twelve and heads of various organizations, is the govern- ing body of the school, To promote friendship and co- operation among the students and faculty is the main objective of this council. Another aim of this organization is to strengthen Kimberley's Honor System, which was established four years ago. The Council publishes a handbook of the rules and regulations of the Honor System at the start of the school year. This booklet informs the student of her responsibility to uphold the system. ln addition to the handbook the Council has a column in the KOURIER, the school news- paper in which members of the Council are able to ex- press their views on problems that may arise. Upper School meetings are held under the direction of the Coun- :il to discuss rules of the Honor System. This year the Council has increased its bank account a great deal. This increase was accomplished through the selling of food during recess and lunch. The Council also sold pens, banners, and other supplies. The Student Council sponsors such activities as the New Girl's Tea, a name contest, social functions for the vari- ous classes, Fall Frolics, the Father-Daughter Dinner, and the Senior High Spring Prom. At this time, we of the Council would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Miss Spurr, the faculty, and the student body for their spirit, cooperation, and enthusiastic support throughout the year. Because of the wonderful leadership of Mr. Coursen and co- operation of all the girls, we had an excellent year. Work began in the fall to prepare for Vespers, in which grades seven through twelve participated. Hard work kept us all busy. Our accomplishment was great. Also, at Christmas time, the Glee Club took its songs and good cheer to the patients at Kessler Institute. Christmas vacation being over, the Glee Club had to return to serious work. Our first joint concert was with Pingry. The two glee clubs did a commendable job. The dance following the concert proved to be full of fun. THIRD ROW: Raines, Rogers, Reilly, Garretson, Kuzmick .l., Shaver, Kuzmick, K., Evans, Wechsler, Francisco, Williamson, MCCOU' nell, Bowen, Bobbi, Bell. Next on the agenda was our annual concert with Montclair Academy. Mr. Coursen worked himself almost to death, but his efforts were not in vain. Another success! lt was with the Freshman Glee Club of Princeton that we had our last concert, a new experience for the Glee Club, but one to which we quickly adapted ourselves. The dance after the concert was a great deal of fun and ended a happy evening. Again, we scored success. Singing at graduation ended the activities of the Glee Club. It was with a little sadness that we com- pleted our very full program. The success was possible only because of Mr. Coursen's tolerance and patience, for which we are all grateful! The seniors leaving Glee Club will miss Mr. Coursen. He has been a wonderful director and friend. The best of luck to next year's I Glee Club. Beauty and the Beast in the form of a puppet show was the Dramatic Club's addition to the convivial atmosphere of the Karnival. On February 15th the annual K.A. fKimberley and Montclair Academyl play was given. The play, ON MON- DAY NEXT, by Philip King was under the able direction of Mr. Paul Geang, Amid numerous activities, the Dramatic Club sponsored the fifth annual poetry reading contest of Kimberley and awarded a volume of poetry to the winning contestant. Members of the club found a means of expression through participation in one act plays such as My Aunt Agatha, a short mystery filled with suspense which was presented to the school during March. Now as the year closes, we, the members of the Dramatic Club express gratitude to our advisor and friend, Mrs. Dallery, and to Miss Hoyt for her great help in prepara- tion for our presentation of Beauty and the Beast.
