I2 :F CLASS HISTORY OW, besT beloveds, lend Thine ears To The hisTory oT ThaT immorTaI class of I936 which wove and Traipsed iTs way Through The halls oT Thai' sTaTely edifice, The Kimberley School, which sTands on The pompous PIymouTh STreeT in MonTcIair. STORY I On a cerTain scinTiIIaTing SepTember morn, The Tollowing young ladies: RuTh Kane, BeTTy Bell, EdiTh Finlay, EIizabeTh Howe. BeTsy Lawes, PaTsy Soverel, Douglas Taylor, EIizabeTh Van Wie, and a number oT small, Timid youThs Took Their sTand on sTolid TeeT and sTared sTernly aT The sTrange world. The young women, needless To say, were domineering Towards The young genTIemen as becomes Their sex. Through The year, These bIiThesome souls had cocoa and crackers laT elevenl, on which They IosT Their TronT TeeTh, made inTeresTing and limp rag dolls Trom whiTe sTockings, and crammed Their small minds wiTh smaTTerings oT reading, ariThmeTic, and spelling. WiTh Miss Soverel. as The general, The children were herded inTo The greaT army known as The educaTed. They gave plays wiTh3The wholehearTedness oT young people, buiIT a posT oTTice Tor ValenTines, and generally sang The year away. STORY II Now a year older, we again greeT you, and wiTh The class increased by CharIoTTe AlTemus, Mary Ayres, Doris Keller, Polly O'6orman, and minus Miss Lawes and several of our IiTTIe genTlemen. Miss Iv1cDeviTT was our Teacher and in rapid succession, we were Indians wiTh all The paraphernalia oT prairies and in wigwams, Then Eskimos wiTh igloos and all The Trimmings, ending up aT The end oT The year wiTh a neaTIy wiggled TogeTher shop smock and some pIasTer of Paris horrors. Our brains grew larger and conTained more. STORY III The Third grade, no more, no less, wiTh a large demon called French pursuing us round and round. Miss Lawes reTurned To our midsT To add To The cheery number. To our amazemenT, we became versed in The inTricacies oT a large, TIaT geography book wiTh a picTure of ChrisTopher Columbus on The TronT. During The winTer monThs we Took greaT pleasure in bombarding all and sundry wiTh large snow ballls. We IeTT The saTe realm of The second Tloor and descended To The honor oT The TourTh grade. STORY IV Now. being in The sacred halls oT The TirsT Tloor, and much Too near The oTTTce Tor comTorT, we Tound ourselves joined by Doris Ferry. This momenTous year we became The proud possessors oT green gym Trousers, which we wore on every and all occasions. Our desks This year were a biT awkward. as They had drawers which we spenT The enTire year Trying To open and shuT. On May Day we disTinguished ourselves-or so we ThoughT-by cavorTing genTly on The greensward. All in all, iT was a year oT Triumphs and marked The beginning oT our growing up. STORY V Behold The TriumphanT,enTrance of Olive Cawley, The sole addiTion To our garland of girls, and who Tilled in The Temporary loss oT Douglas Taylor, who wenT To school in England. The class was divided inTo Two clawing, howling soccer Teams which venTed Their wraTh daily aT recess in a mosT unorThodox Tashion. We Teared The TrighTTul fracTions and sTudied The ancienT Romans under The experT supervision oT Miss WrighT and Mrs. Reed, respecTively. I3 9 STORY VI ln fhe sixfh grade we were enlivened by fwo small whirlwinds, Miss Winpenny and Miss Rhoades, losing anofher of our merry fhrong, Miss Finlay. We daredifhe dreadful decimal and gave our own impression of fhe use of windows by pouring ouf of fhem fo fhe dismay of all. Our new quarfers had sliding blackboards which we shuffled. back and forfh many fimes a day, buf we ended our rollicking mornings wifh neaf curfseys fo Miss Flannery. STORY VII Af fhis poinf our calm was upsef by fhe enfrance of Elaine Beling, Cecilia De Golyer, Marguerife Penflarge, and fhe refurn of Miss Finlay fresh from Ausfralia. We foiled over our increasingly difficulf work buf managed fo mix a considerable amounf of playing in wifh if. Our French became so experf fhaf we presenfed liffle French plays which our loving parenfs dufifully affended. Throughouf fhe year we sfrove hard. feeling fhe impending doom of fhe upper school, where we would be nexf year. STORY Vlll Now being in fhe upper school, we considered ourselves young women of infinife resource and sagacify. Wifh fhe addifion of Jackie Isaacs and Kiffy Ward, we blundered abouf fhe halls in a vain affempf fo change classes correcfly. The movies enfered our lives af fhis poinf and we spenf mosf of our fime worshipping fhe differenf sfars, whose picfures we fackecl under our desklids. Their only compefifion was l'larvard's foofball capfain, Barry Wood, whom we felf if necessary fo adore. The climax of fhe year came wifh a class picnic af Lake Valhalla, where we had a hilarious fime. STORY IX A knock af fhe door and enfer Miss Osborne. Marching down fo assembly would have been an ordeal if we could nof have casf admiring glances af fhe seniors. By fhis fime we had become accusfomed fo fhe bells and differenf classrooms. We spenf mosf of our Monday mornings discussing our fabulous week-ends which consisfed of felling abouf fhe Junior Assemblies. STORY X Our firsf year in fhe big room! We won fhe prize for our Fall Frolic skif, fhanks fo fhe inspirafion of fhe NRA. Affer Chrisfmas we welcomed Eva Menfzendorff and Marcy Buffum. Aside from fhe usual mixfure of sfudies and fudge, we failed fo acquif ourselves in any oufsfanding manner. STORY Xl Enfer Rufh l-lunf, Beffe Surbrug, Jodie Murray, and Kafie Websfer. The Glee Club was organized and many of us ioined if and Ienf our voices wifh greaf zeal fo fhe fwo concerfs given fhaf year. We spenf fhe enfire year preparing for Class Day, buf we felf fhaf fhe praise received when if was finally produced rewarded us. STORY XII And now, O Besf Beloveds. we have come fo The end of our fale. wherein we are seniors in 'rifle if nof behavior. We are beginning fo feel sad af fhe fhoughf fhaf affer so many years of happy companionship our class is going fo break up and each member musf pursue her way alone. We feel fhaf we are unable fo fully express our grafifude fo Kimberly and her able faculfy for all fhey have given fo us. THE YEAR BOOK STAFF, '36. ThereTore we have considered The music classes worThy oT a place in our year book. Such wonderTul and inTeresTing improvemenTs have been made ThaT we Think They should be called To The aTTenTion oT The readers oT This book. To begin wiTh, The regular singing class has Taken a new lease on life. Miss Bauer and Miss CarpenTer have sTimulaTed a sparkling response boTh wiTh Their excellenT selecTion oT music and Their own charming personaliTies. WiTh This Training, The group singing aT CommencemenT and on -May Day has been greaTly improved and made well worTh hearing. ln The TourTh and TiTTh academic grades an orchesTra has been Tormed under The leadership oT Miss Bauer and Miss CarpenTer and conducTed by Ellen Tonnele. This orchesTra gave a concerT Tor The Three upper classes and made Them realize whaT good opporTuniTies Kimberley has Tor The musically inclined. The girls play Their own insTru- menTs and have succeeded in blending Them inTo a very harmonious group. In The lower school The children have a Pipers' Club. where They make Their own pipes ouT oT bamboo sTicks and Then play Them. The pipers have proved Themselves To be a greaT adcliTion To May Day: The soTT noTes lend Themselves very well as an accompanimenT To The English Tolk Tunes which The oTher girls sing. The smaller children wriTe Their own music, and iT is charming. FirsT They compose a liTTle poem and Then TIT iT To Their own Tune. They have wriTTen songs abouT WinTer and have iusT Tinished one on Spring. This year The seniors were given a Music AppreciaTion course, which has been TascinaTing. This class has sTudied The hisTory oT music, wiTh lives oT The greaT com- posers, and The girls have also learned how To Take musical dicTaTion and To iclenTiTy The works oT The diTFerenT composers wiThouT any hinTs Trom Miss Bauer or Miss CarpenTer. The main aTTainmenT is a deeper appreciaTion oT beauTiTul music and a realizaTion oT The many Tields ThaT music has. Now ThaT The year is almosT over, The graduaTing class hopes +ha+ This rebirTh oT music in Kimberley will carry on and become a TradiTion, necessary To The school acTiviTies. ' EDITH FINLAY.
