Contents Dedication Headmaster's Address Faculty Seniors Sports Activities r Graduation Dedication . ' r 'WL A We, the class of 1977, dedicate our yearbook in gratefulness to two men who have given us and Kimball Union Academy years of valuable and devoted service. With the CONCORDIA dedication we also give these two men, George Akerstrom and George Prescott, our respect, our love, and our best wishes for the future. George Prescott ff' A lisf When we remember Kimball Union twenty-five years from now, we will probably remember only the good parts. We have a way of forgetting the bad. I expect it will be that way with us, but the question is, How will we remember? Will we be able to laugh about our experience together? I hope so and I hope we can be together so we can laugh together. Remember the good times because those memories make life enjoyable, or at least tolerable. Learn from the bad times, then forget them. I hope you will take a moment through the years to remind me of the good times. At the age l shall be, l may have a tendency to forget both the good and the bad. ln your class we finally have a full slate of officers-the first since 1966. You are a class of excellence, as evidenced by the standard you set in GUYS AND DOLLS and your spring sports successes. Your academic excellence has been evident in the competition which existed for the top academic average. You are also a class of latent talent. I believe the years will reflect growth far beyond anything you have shown us in the years you have been at Kimball Union. Mausi Olga Manno hasn't given twenty-six years of her life to Kimball Union without some considerable effect upon the atmosphere of the academy conveyed to so many generations of students and visitors. Since 1951, under Chief Brewster, Coach Carver, John Cotton and Tom Mikula, Mausi has served as hostess of the guest house, librarian and instructor in German. And much of the civilized grace which so many of us have come to associate with Kimball Union over the years has a direct correlation to the presence of this woman on the campus. This year, though she will remain as hostess of the guest house, Mrs. Manno is retiring from most of her active involvement with the academy-and, along with twenty-five other classes, the class of 1977 wishes to say, Thank you, Mrs. Manno, for all you have given to us. W X 4 geffagkm-..., 5 -f-- ..---hwnl. ., v F N W. 11111 I I If i i 4 2 2 Graduation 1977 Commencement Address Mr. Peter Holland I was flattered when some members of the senior class decided that they wanted me to speak at their graduation. Actually, I was more than a little surprised in that, for a good part of the year many of them have already subjected themselves to some of my less than coherent monologues in one or more of our senior electives. One might conclude, It seems, that there is a good deal more masochism in the class of '77 than meets the eye, While I have taught for fifteen years, I have also avoided successfully for fifteen years any hint of a public speech. As I proceed, some of you will no doubt ask, What in heaven's name possessed him to ruin a good record? I have always felt that graduation addresses should be light and short. When one part of me begins to make a heavy remark, another part points a finger and snorts derisively. This, then will be light and short. One problem is that I made the mistake of reading last year's speech in the alumni magazine, and I discovered my friend and mentor, Lionel Mosher, said it all. I have nothing to add. But I'm supposed to say something, so I guess l'lI have to resort to plagiarism-or as we in the academic world call it, research. ln school I was lucky from time to time to have a great teacher--a teacher who was interested in helping students to develop what Schumacher in his book SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL calls the Center -that is, the place where a person has to create for himself an orderly system of ideas about himself and the world, which can regulate the direction of his various strIvings. One such teacher at Dartmouth was the late Professor Herbert Faulkner West who was loved by many of his students, but who was looked down upon by some of his colleagues for giving what were then called gut lor easyl courses, and who frightened the administration because he laughed at them when they got pompous. Professor West, however, had done a good deal of reading and thinking. He saw much more about life than did most of his colleagues, and he had the rare ability to make his students see the possibilities. What he had to say was often so simple that many people he met dismissed It. I remember one thing. From time to time Herb would look at us and say, Don't be doltsl The world is peopled with dolts. All I hope is that you become reasonably civilized human beings who think for yourselves. I remember saying to myself, Well, that's a nice thought, but-I mean-we're all reasonably civilized-we all think for ourselves. You see, I knew even less then than I do now. So for those of you taking notes, I guess that this is the message of this talk. Members of the class of 1977: Don't be dolts! The world IS full of them. I'm sure that other members of the faculty join me in hoping that you all turn out to be reasonably civilized persons who think for yourselves. Now, what is a civilized person? Most of you have answers to that question, but, as I am the speaker, this is my neither exhaustive nor particularly original list. Being civilized, of course, by definition involves other people. A civilized person must try to be sensitive to and tolerant of other people. He should shy away from needless, damaging criticism of those around him. He should feel uneasy and unhappy rather than good about hurting someone else. He should at least make an attempt to look at people and ideas from a point of view 'other than his own-to admit the possibility that he is wrong even when he is sure that he is right. ' I think that a civilized person is someone with inner resources-someone who not only can, but who occasionally NEEDS to spend a little time alone-someone who finds himself reasonably good company. A civilized person, it seems to me, must have some knowledge of and feeling for those things in our culture which have uplifted and sometimes enobled us: our Judeo-Christian tradition-our language-literature-the visualuand performing arts. QQWV W nd WF H- I would say also that one is hard put to be civilized without a sense of humor. l won't try to define that. - Of course, a civilized person tries to think for himself, and I think the best way to do that is to be something of an iconoclast-that is, one who attacks cherished beliefs and traditional institutions when he feels that they are based on error or superstition. To do this one doesn't necessarily have to be a strident, obnoxious challenger of all established traditions and ideas. One CAN be a gentle skeptic. One can occasionally ask himself, ls that true? When was the last time I thought that through? Have l ever? The message being over, l would like to suggest a motto for the class of '77 a motto which l think is appropriate for different people, different times-different moods. The motto I would like to suggest is the Latin word Excelsior! For those of you who still have idealistic moments and feel the need for inspiration Excelsior means, of course, Ever Upward! --For those of you feeling a bit jaded and cynical, excelsior is also what they stuff furniture with. So, you see, such a motto can have many uses. l wish you all much peace and love in your lives. ' M ,ff 35 I Q, mf 4 ff- 42 3 f 5' 1' if Q.
