REVIEW OF VARSITY FOOTBALL SEASON The rafher discouraging fask of moulding a decenf foofball feam oul of a squad of ninefy unpolished recruifs and only seven of Iasf year's Ieffermen faced Coach Carver af fhe sfarf of fhe I94O foofball season. How he performed fhis feaf and furned ouf a nof only recognizable 'ream buf one which was fo be respecfed among fhe ranks of New England school feams seems nofhing less fhan a miracle unless you know fhe man.Through his unrelenfing acfivify on fhe pracfice field, and his sfrafegy in devising plays, he furned fhe squad of raw candi- dafes info an aggressive and powerful eleven. Capfains Lamson and Johnson capably led fhe feam fhroughouf fhe hard schedule and much credif is due 'lhis pair for fheir work. Affer a rafher shorf period of pracfice, fhe feam mef ifs firsf adversary in fhe imposing Darfmoufh Freshmen, B feam. The game was held on fhe home field, Safurday, Ocfober I2+h. Affer a frying game, in which if was evidenf fhaf neifher feam had had much experience on fhe field, Kimball Union emerged fhe vicfor by fhe scanf margin of 7-6. The second game, played on Ocfober I2fh, also af Meriden resulfed in a win for fhe Orange and Black over Albany Academy, by a score of 20-I4. I+ was in fhis game +ha+ fhe characferisfic spirif of fhe I940 feam was firsf shown, in coming from behind fo win fhe game. The fhird game was perhaps 'I'he one 'Ihaf was mosf desired of fhe season. The Kimball Union eleven mef Governor Dummer Academy on fhe home field, in an affempf fo avenge fheir defeaf of Iasf year. This fhey succeeded in doing fo fhe joy of fhe enfire school, by fhe decisive score of 2I-7. Ocfober 26fh was fhe dafe of fhe annual Fall Houseparfy, and fhe game fhaf Kimball Union had fo play was againsf fhe powerful Middlebury Freshmen. The game ended in a hard foughf fie af 7-all. If was on fhe following week-end, fhaf of November 2nd, 'lhaf fhe Varsify eleven mef ifs Waferloo. A+ Sfockbridge, in a driving cold rain, fhe burly boys from fhe agriculfural school were foo heavy for our hard running backs, who were unable fo gef foeholds in fhe morass of mud, and were powerless bofh offensively and defensively. The I3 poinfs which fhe Sfock- bridgers piled up in fhe firsf parf of fhe game were, as Coach Carver puf if, As good as a million in fhaf kind of weafher. New Hampfon, played fhe nexf week-end af fheir fall dance, mef shorf shiff af fhe hands of fhe men from Kimball, who were ouf fo ge+ one back because of fhe previous week- end's disasfer. The Kimball backs were all over fhe field, and fhe final fally read 28-0. The fradifional rival, Vermonf Academy, was nexf in line for Kimball Union. The enfire school furnecl ouf for fhe game, held af Saxfons River, and were well pleased by whaf fhey saw. Though fhe Kimball men had gone fhrough a rainy week wifh hardly any pracfice, fhey sfill were able fo down fhe Vermonfers fo fhe fune of 2I-0. AII in all, fhe I940 foofball season was enfirely successful, wifh five wins, one fie, and one defeaf. Some sorf of record was sef fhis year by Alan Roberfson, who, ouf of fiffeen affempfezl conversions, missed only one. Scoring honors of fhe season go fo Fred Johnson and Alan Rob- erfson. The ofher Kimball Union scorers were Alan Buchsbaum and Selby Day. ' VARSITY FOOTBALL Firsl' Row llefl' lo righfl: Roberison, Hinman, Kiniry, Flanders, E. Johnson, F. FOOTBALL SQUAD I94I I940 COA,CHlNG STAFF Leff fo righf: Brewsfer, Wiles. Barker. Carver, Sherman, Douglass, Deneaulf. THE COACHING STAFF Kimball Union may well be proud of ifs coaching sfaff. Working up fhrough fhe fufelege of Mike and Grubby , fhe fyro learns fhe spirif of fhe game and fhe essenfial fundamen- fals. Nexf he graduafes fo 'rhe squad of Chief and Mr. Wiles. If he is forfunafe, he will move on fo Coach's squad where he will eifher learn each minufe defail of backfield play from Coach or be grounded in fhe mysferies of line play by Knufe and Bunny . The frue fesf of our sfaff is shown nof only by fhe record of games won and losf buf also byl+he record of Kimball Union boys in college compefifion. No maffer how slim fhe mafer- ial may be, each year finds Kimball Union in fhe winning column. These men, headed by Coach Carver, work long and hard fo mould fheir feams info perfecf machines. We wanf fo fhank fhem individually and as a group for fheir pafience wifh our errors, fheir kindness when we were dispirifed and fheir firmness when we were wrong. Thus are K. U. A. 'reams made. SOCCER SEASON The fiffh season of Kimball Union Soccer was nofable for ifs difficulf varsify schedule, and for +he appearance of fhe firsf J. V. Soccer feam in fhe schooI's hisfory. A squad of fwenfy- four mel' Coach Boulay on fhe opening day and sfarfed pracfice. The firsf game, wifh Ex- efer, on Ocfober 5+h, was marked by fhe offensive sfrengfh of Exefer and fhe excellenf defen- sive play of Kimball Union. ln spife of Capfain Duvally's almosf flawless work in fhe goal, Exefer won, 4-0. The second game, af New Hampfon, was a hard foughf baffle, wifh K. U. A. faking fhe vicfory in fhe overfime period, 2-I. The nexf game was fhe firsf home game fhaf +he Soccer feam played. This game was againsf Darfmoufh Freshmen, who displayed a superior brand of soccer fhroughouf, and fri- umphed, 6-0. The Governor Dummer game saw a fighfing K. U. A. eleven go down in defeaf fo a ma- ferially beffer feam. This game was characferized by ifs wide-open, free-scoring play, and af fhe end fhe score was 9-3, fo fhe defrimenf of fhe Orange and Black. The season's besf game, if was agreed, was fhe one played af Deerfield fhe following weelc. Though fhe Wildcafs were defeafed 2-0, fhe game was oufsfanding and fhe play was worfhy of any college feam. The refurn game wifh New Hampfon was played fhe following Safurday af Meriden in a driving deluge and a sea of mud. Luck rafher fhan 'l'eam play was fhe deciding facfor, and New Hampfon won 3-2, in one overfime period. The final game saw a Mounf Hermon eleven, whose play was of college caliber, com- plefely oufdo fhe fighfing Wildcafs. Alfhough fhe season seems discouraging in fhe maffer of fhe feam's record, maferial re- sul+s fo fhe boys who worked and foughl' hard were well worfh if. A greaf deal of credif musf be given Coaches Boulay and Babcock. for whose hard work in coaching, fhe +eam is very grafeful. THE SKI SEASON Wifh only fwo defeafs in fhree years of coaching, Bob Densmore came fo Meriden af fhe opening of fhe l94l ski season greafly handicapped by a lack of skiers who had nafural falenf. This obsfacle did nof faze fhe feam or fhe coach, and an average season ensued. lf was climaxed by a brillianf vicfory over fhe crack Vermonf Academy feam and fhe evenly balanced group of skiers from Deerfield on February I5, fhe week-end of fhe Kimball Union Carnival. The season was inifiafed by a close confesf wifh fhe Darfmoufh Freshman Team, which upheld ifs repufafion of fhe besl- yef. Alfhough fhe ouflook was dubious before fhe meef, when fhe final poinfs were fofaled, Kimball Union frailed by fhe slim margin oflfive poinfs. Our feam's mosf able capfain, Dick McCrudden, received an iniury in fhe firsf evenf which puf him ouf of fhe running for fhe remainder of fhe meef. Individual sfarring can hardly be menfioned, for if was fhe efforfs of every skier on fhe feam fhaf produced a score so nearly equaling fhaf of fhe sfar-sfudded Freshman group. Beffer preparedness and a liffle more confidence in vicfory were nof desfined fo show againsf fhe Middlebury Junior Varsify, because poor snow condifions necessifafed fhe cancel- lafion of fhaf confesf The following week-end, a feam from fhe Universify of New Hampshire, including several varsify skiers, who, incidenfally, proved fheir worfh af fhe Darfmoufh Carnival, fook fhe meef, due largely fo fheir longer skiing experience. Durrance and McCrudden were fhe brighf spofs in Kimball Union's defeaf, faking a second in fhe slalom and a firsf in fhe iump, respecfively. On February firsf fhe feam mef Vermonf Academy, Deerfield and Cushing in a quad- rangular affair af Vermonf. The superior Vermonf Academy feam won fhis meef, faking every evenf excepf fhe downhill, which Kimball Union won by a large margin. The Kimball Union feam scored high enough in fhe ofher evenfs fo capfure a sfrong second place in fhe meef. The highligl-if of fhe season came very opporfunely on fhe week-end of fhe Kimball Union Winfer Carnival, when fhe home feam upsef fhe undefeafed Vermonf Academy club and scored decisively ahead of Deerfield. Alfhough firsf place in fhe slalom was capfured by Jim Dur- rance of Kimball Union, fhe evenf wenf fo Vermonf by a very slighf margin. The second evenf found Durrance again fhe winner, buf sfill our feam frailed by several poinfs. The deciding evenf of fhe meef can be chalked up as a vicfory for coach Densmore, whose superior judg- menf and abilify in fhe choice and use of fhe correcf wax for fhe prevailing condifions gave fhe firsf five places in fhe Cross Counfry fo Kimball Union. Capfain McCrudden was fhe win- ner and was followed by Durrance, Kimball, Reid and Davies, all of fhe home feam. This clean sweep found Kimball Union in fhe lead when fhe final poinfs were fofaled. By winning fhis meef fhe feam has refained for Kimball Union fhe possession of fhe John Burroughs Memor- ial Trophy. Credif is due fo fhe enfire feam composed of Capfain McCrudden, Durrance, J. Afwood, Kimball, Capfain-elecf Fairbanks, F. Davies, Reid and Dyer. They combined fheir spirif and cooperafion wifh fhe unfiring efforfs of Coach Densmore and produced a successful season. The frack feam had a bad day af Hanover wifh fhe Darfmoufh Freshmen. The sfar-sfudded Darfmoufh feam swepf nearly every evenf and won 67-I4. The only highlighfs of fhe meef were fhe close relay race which Darfmoufh won, and Alan Buchsbaum's win in fhe 40-yard dash. Kimball Union placed fourfh in fhe prep- school division af fhe Bowdoin lnferscholasfics. Buchsbaum was in a fie for firsf place in fhe 300 and he placed second in fhe dash.
