Then this armored star gave Kimball fans their biggest thrill of the seasong he took the ball on the first play from scrimmage and roared 65 yards for a touchdown! Soon, however, it began to happeng completed Sunset passes became as numerous as giggles at a sihc year old's birthday party. The Knights fought to the bitter endg Jimmy Stewart staged an aerial attack of his own! He passed to Brown in the third quarter for a TD, and flipped the ball to Smith to pick up the extra points. ln the fourth Stewart lofted one to Robb for another score. The Knights were, however, rained out due to precipitating pigskins from Bison- land, 56-20. 2I3 f I2 i x Brown charges for yardage. HARVEY ROTHELL, Junior SOC OVERPOWERS KIMBALL To climax High School Day at the State Fair of Texas, October 23, Kimball met the South Oak Cliff Colden Bears in the Cotton Bowl. The Bruins, a highly spirited team, were the pre-season favorites for the city championship, an honor which they lived up to by a display of their speed, power, and vast experience. SOC scored on runs of 13, 30, 25, and -L yards, and passed for one more tally bringing their total for the night to 37 points. The Knights, youngest member of the list of Dallas football teams, received during the course of the game several injuries and had breaks, and were, for the first time unable to score. The Knights went all the way to Denison, Friday night, October 30, and returned home under a comfortable blanket of fog and drizzle with that long awaited, well accepted victory! They swatted the Yellow Jackets I8-I2 in a battle which was nip and tuck for a while, but which ended up with Atwood on top. After a scoreless first period Jim Cullar started the ball rolling by recovering one which had rolled out of the hands of a Yellow Jacket on the opponent's 38-yard line. From there Brown and Atwood moved the pigskin to the 9. With 516 minutes remaining in the second quarter, Raymon Brown skirted left end for a TD! Late in the 2nd, Denison climaxed a 73-yard drive by obtaining six points of their own. After a lovely halftime perform- ance, a Yellow Jacket buzzed 64 yards to up the score 12-6. This was just enough to reorganize the Kimball team, for, minutes later, Atwood cuddled a pass from Stewart to put the Knights in scoring position. On a fourth down play, with inches to go to pay dirt, Atwood smashed through the line to re-tie the score. Late in the fourth, the Knights displayed their desire, determination, and ability as they continued to drive. After Blackburn had placed the ball on his own 45, Sir Atwood did a gallant thing, he took the ball, stomped, wiggled, and raced 55 yards for the winning touchdown! Needless to say, Kimball fans went wild, and it seems anticlimatical to say that Atwood inter- cepted a Denison pass and Gary Davis recovered a Yellow Jacket fumble before the game was over, to assassinate any attempt at retaliation. 4 7 y rf RAYMON BROWN, Sophomore I ,, Q 1' X ,ft -5 MIKE COLLINS, Sophomore Victory for the battle-weary Knights. ..i r J fort A fi aff 1 Brown slips away from an anxious tackler. CORKY CROSS, Sophomore JIM STEWART, Sophomore KNIGHTS BREAK 6-AAAA ICE l-1-6 Scatback Raymon Brown broke the ice at frigid Cobb Stadium Thursday night, November 5. to give the Knights their first win over a Dallas team, the victim being Crozier Technical High School. The Knights were three quarters in thawing out as a freezing north wind whipped players and fans, alike. After a scoreless first half a Wolf managed his Way across the goal line early in the third period, but the attempt for extra points was muffed. Either Brown was standing closest to the heater in the locker room, or else he decided that the end zone was the warmest part of the playing field, for, early in the finale he took the hall on first down from the Tech 37, quickly knocked the icicles from his cleats and blazed a broken path into the Wolf den to retrieve his prize of six cubs. On the try for extra points, he took the ball and got in a little basketball practice by dribbling it on the ground a couple of times, before he gave the Knights a two point lead. Several plays later linebacker Mike Collins picked off a Technical pass and romped to the Vffolvesj 37. History repeats itself and so did Brown as he took the ball on first down and shot through the Tech defense for the winning TD. It's Brown again for the TD. ive-H., lb A if ff ar I y ,IDI HOUNSEL, Sophomore JIMMY BIVINS, Sophomore Leopard tackler grabs handful of air. LEOPARDS SNEAK BY The Knights poured their hearts into the last game of the season with Adamson at Sprague Field Thursday, November 12, but, although they scored as many TD,s as the Leopards, two extra points made all the difference. Early in the first period of play the Leopards drove to the Kimball 23 where they passed the ball over the goal line. The pass for 2 points was incomplete. With 11:08 left of the scoreless last half, a Leopard dived over from the one. Then came the pass play for the two points which were to spell the difference between a tie and defeat for the Knights. Two consecutive passes from the hands of Jimmy Stewart to the arms of Raymon Brown sparked the fire which almost won the game for the Knights. Brown made superb nabs of both passes which were for 1-1 and 32 yards. He then marched 17 yards for the score on the oldest trick in the bookg the Statue of Liberty play. Brown, hlowever, was unable to pick up the extras. After some fine defensive work, largely on the part of Sidney Geiser. Stewart passed his way to the Adamson 31. Then he hit Robb, who made a magnificant catch, on the dead run in the end zone to raise Kimball's score and hopes. Stewart's pass for the all important extra points was intercepted. With one more quarter the Knights might have won, hut. such was not the case and Adamson sneaked by to win the finale, 11-12. KIMBALE. 130115 'B Action at the Sunset game. BASKETBALL - 1960 Excitement, fast action, and upset emotions marked the first season of city basketball competition for Kim- ball, as the spirited Knights chalked-up a record of 15 wins and ll- losses. Late in October. the squad, twelve strong, was already hard at work, practicing long hours in hopes of bring- ing honors to Kimball in a courtly manner. Gallant determination and concise teamwork paid rich dividends as the Knights took 14 of their first 20 games, defeating, in fact, the team that eventually won the Con- solation Championship of the Dr. Pepper Tournament, Waco High. Illness and injuries took their toll as several players were temporarily side-lined during the season due to sprained knees and ankles, and the flu. The city race commenced at Cobb Field House on January 5, in a contest with Sunset. After a nip and tuck battle, the opponent managed to win the game with a margin of only a few points, 62-58. The second game was, however, a different story, as the Knights defeated Crozier Tech in a-high-point thriller, 62-56. This victory, early in competition, placed Kimball neatly in second place, along side the Bisons. 226 Lookin ' Back on the eason. . . Action from an early season game The remainder of the games, terminating on February 9, with a 5-point loss to Adamson, were exciting and often very close. The Knights did not quite make the grade as they were slowly edged out of the race to end the season with their still impressive record of 15 wins and 14 losses.
