Dr. Justin Ford Kimball was one of Texas's most versatile and successful citizens. His list of accomplishments and services to humanity tells a story that would take volumes to picture accurately. Born on a farm near Huntsville, Texas, in 1872, Justin Kimball came from a long line of preachers, teachers, and scholars. As a boy, he could read Hebrew and Creek, and was well-versed in many other subjects. By the time he was twenty-seven, he had received three degrees, Bachelor of Arts from Lebanon College in Louisiana, Master of Arts from Baylor University, and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Michigan. He later was awarded the Doctor of Laws by Baylor University. Dr. Kimball's professional experience was as varied as his educational background. He owned several farms during his lifetime, taught school from the elementary to the college level, was a lawyer, a specialized law clerk, a superintendent of many school districts, including that of Dallas, a vice-president of Baylor University, a leading insurance executive, and an excellent public speaker in wide demand. Some of his main accomplishments include the formation of Blue Cross Hospitalization Plan and the writing of Our Dallas, adopted as the official history of this city. This kindly, scholarly man died in 1956, leaving a brilliant record of accomplishments, a lingering memory in the hearts of all who had known him, and lasting mementos of his historic educational, social, and business advancements for mankind.
