Dallas, Zfcws 1959 Hrs! Sdifiau On September 1, 1958, Justin F. Kimball High School became Dallas's newest and most modern high school. Located at 3606 South Westmoreland, the school plant covers 189, 981 square feet. It is built almost entirely on one level, around two inner courts. Miles and miles of corridors lead to sixty-five academic classrooms, with the library and the study halls serving all. A visual education room, a commercial department, homemaking and science labora- tories, music and hand rooms, two art rooms, and four vocational shops are strategically placed. The auditorium, the cafeteria, an armory, and a physical education department complete with spectator-gymnasium are among the facili- ties provided in this great comprehensive high school. VF T ' i - ' 39 ' 132 V? fx Q iii MJPEHMS Dr. Justin Ford Kimball was one of Texas's most versatile and successful citizens. His list of accomplishments and services to humanity tells a story that would take volumes to picture accurately. Born on a farm near Huntsville, Texas, in 1872, Justin Kimball came from a long line of preachers, teachers, and scholars. As a boy, he could read Hebrew and Creek, and was well-versed in many other subjects. By the time he was twenty-seven, he had received three degrees, Bachelor of Arts from Lebanon College in Louisiana, Master of Arts from Baylor University, and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Michigan. He later was awarded the Doctor of Laws by Baylor University. Dr. Kimball's professional experience was as varied as his educational background. He owned several farms during his lifetime, taught school from the elementary to the college level, was a lawyer, a specialized law clerk, a superintendent of many school districts, including that of Dallas, a vice-president of Baylor University, a leading insurance executive, and an excellent public speaker in wide demand. Some of his main accomplishments include the formation of Blue Cross Hospitalization Plan and the writing of Our Dallas, adopted as the official history of this city. This kindly, scholarly man died in 1956, leaving a brilliant record of accomplishments, a lingering memory in the hearts of all who had known him, and lasting mementos of his historic educational, social, and business advancements for mankind. Kimball made history for their high school last fall by selecting the team name of Knights.', We of the yearbook staff wanted a name for the annual, that would best carry out a theme of knighthood. Ideals imbued in the realm of chivalry led us to seek a title relating to a tangible yet symbolic object. Excalibur, King Arthur's magic sword, was the answer. Excalibur was given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake. As the story goes, Arthur had broken his sword in a duel with an enemy knight, and was saved just in time by Merlin the magician. Merlin took Arthur to a lake deep in the forest, and, as the king gazed thereon, he beheld an arm, clothed in white samite, above the surface of the lake. In the hand was a fair sword that gleamed in the rays of the setting sun. Rowing from the shore, Arthur took Excalibur, and the arm sank back into the water. With the aid of the magic sword, Arthur performed many deeds for the betterment of his kingdom. In keeping a promise, years later Arthur returned Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake. T here likewise I beheld Excalibur ...So this great brand the king Took, and by this will beat his foemen down. -TENNYSON l I N .5 li N Adminisfralivu lsr D Left to right: DON E. MATTHEWS, R. H. Kimball High School: School spirit grows in a new high school through the ideals held not only by the principal but also by the students. To set right traditions for those who will claim Kimball as their alma mater in years to come is the worthy goal of us all. It has been our privilege and our responsibility to build tradition and to decide many issues which will bring glory to our high school. We find our academic and activity programs summed up in this, the first school yearbook. You hold in your hand a treasured possession, one which reflects an important milestone in your life. History has been made at Justin F. Kimball during 1958-59. Let us ever uphold the high aims of Knights, striving for victory in every endeavor, building a noble tradition and protecting the high standards attained. That we shall work toward such a goal is my earnest hope. Very sincerely yours, W. P. Durrett, Principal 1 f,b V R. L. I48 798 Season Keeume' The first edition of Kimball's Knights found their infant season a rugged one as they played together for the first time. The going was rough from start to finish, but it was profitable for our experience-hungry team. The coaches had a great task as they built a team from boys of unknown caliber. We feel that the experience the Knights have received and the budding spirit here at Kimball will help them as we enter city competition next year.
