Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1950 volume:

f Published by THE LONGHORN STAFF of KIMBALL COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Prom the Principal: In every department our school is advancing up the road we wish to follow. Let's dig in and have championships in all departments. We have the students; we have the faculty; we have the equipment. let's exert the energy and hit the top. IXoJj Prom the Superintendent: The 1950 Longhorn preserves for future enjoyment the cherished memories of our high school days. Someone has said that there is profit and fun in jobs well done, but that wasting of time is a bore. Many K.C.H.S. students of high caliber are making enviable records, not only in their academic work, but also in athletics, speech, and music. May this trend continue through the years, making our high school the envy of the Panhandle and an institution of which we may justly be proud. ____ ( I rftutcccU Seated: Delores Le May, Joan Strasheim, Margie Stahla, Shirlee Mulvihill, Jane Mockett, Darlene Wilson, Lois Dickerson. We struggled through a music contest, 2 May fetes, and a play. Some of our educated group were Jack Vencill, Kenneth Clinger, Joan Strasheim, Bill Maginnis, Sonia Torgeson, Donna Mulvihill, Jim Stander, and Robert Pinkerton. In 1946, 14 boys and 15 talented girls entered K.C.H.S. A week later none of us thought we were so talented after the initiation we were put through to become Freshmen. During our freshman year we were led by Mr. Flanders and Johnny Vencill. During our Junior year through the leadership of Jim Stander, Mrs. Marhefka and Mr. Panchear we put on the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet for the seniors. Our theme was the Stork Club. Miss Swick directed our junior class play, NUTS AND BOLTS”. As seniors we were led by the boys and Mr. Pancheau. The play, BEST FOOT FORWARD,” was presented under the direction of Mr. Babcock. The outstanding athletes of our class were Jim Stander, Bill Maginnis, Sammy Marshno, Martin Esch, and Frank Land. DONNA BARRET is now in Dix and is known as the number one lady of society, since she has taken up the occupation of teaching women drivers and has provided the city’s first stoplight. SONIA TORGESON is starring in a Broadway theater and sells Packards on the side. ANNABELLE BLACK has established a lonely hearts club in one of the large cities. Her customers are complaining, though; it seems she keeps all the best prospects for herself. B. J. RAPER can’t make up her mind which college to attend - - Yale or Harvard. BILL MAGINNIS is seen arguing with history teachers - as usual at Creighton. JACK VENCILL bought a cow and is now attempting his own milk route. CLYDE NELSON is the proud owner of a ten acre ranch. We are still wondering why we see MAX LITTRELL’S Chevrolet crossing the Colorado line in the wee hours of Sunday morning. DELMAR TJARDES and La VERN GORANSEN are very successful in the burlesque show business. BERDINE PETERSON is living near the highway and is enjoying her private swimming pool. We see BARBARA SMITH teaching at K.C.H.S. It seems they want to keep it in the family. ROBERT PINKERTON is the Professor of Science at University of Nebraska. He still loves to be thought of as a genius. MARTIN ESCH once had hopes of becoming an M.D., but due to circumstances beyond his control has now resorted to being a veterinarian. DONNA MULVIHILL is happily married. We won't mention any names but his initials are Lloyd Kallhoff. We see RITA.now soaring through the wild blue yonder as an airline hostess. We can’t understand why she makes so many trips to see the pilot. JEAN KEITH spends her time among the three states of Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado. MARY ANN and ALMA have taken up school teaching at Oliver. LEE RAY is now one of the prominent judges on the Miss America Contests. (Still looking them over, huh, Lee?) DICK SHEPARD has an establishment in Jacinto. He sells Chevrolet cars. DORA STAAB hasn’t decided what career she wants as yet - - manager of Hesteds or Stahla’s Dairy Store. JOHNNY VENCILL lent the Ford to their son for his first date, the same one he and Lois used. DELORES LeMAY is married to one Dick and worries about the other one. ERVIN CLAY is now making millions selling a new invention of his. It is a gun that gets up at sunrise and goes to hunt ducks by itself. SAMMY MARSHNO has taken up a new kind of business - - - interior decoration for cars. FRANK LAND had ambitions of being a bronc rider at Frontier Days. All the farther he got was a job opening the chutes. JEAN BRADT took up the occupation of driving the school bus from Bushnell to Kimball. KENNETH CLINGER is making a living beating tom-toms at Indian pow-wows. Settun Ccl4a TVilt I, DONNA BARRETT, will my crush on J. S. to any other girl who thinks she can do any better. I, ANNABELLE BLACK, will my reserved ways to any girl who thinks she can use them. I, JEAN BRADT, will be good. I, ALMA KINDVALL, will my bashfulness to Shirley Dickerson, who could use it. I, BARBARA SMITH, will my knowledge to Lyle Story. I, JEAN KEITH, will my last 20 to Mary Jean Christiansen. I, DORA LEE STAAB, will keep out of trouble. I, LaVERN GORANSON, will never tell. I MARTIN ESCH will my athletic ability to Richard to keep it in the school awhile longer. I, MAX LITTRELL, will my ability to pick up girls to Donald Clay. I, FRANK LAND, will my cowboy boots to Ronnie Cortney. 1, JACK VENQLL, will my model A to my little brother, Jim, for as long as it will run. I, DELMAR TJARDES, wrill my bottle of H2O2 to Karen Naylor. (Better luck next time;. I CLYDE NELSON, will my chair in band to all up-and-coming saxophone players. I, SAMMY MARSHNO, will my quiet running car to Don Case, who likes to be quiet. I, ERVIN CLAY, will all the days I have been absent to K.C.H.S. I hope they are as good to the school as they were to me. I, JIM STANDER, will my conceit to Connie Good, but what will he do with any more? I, BOB PINKERTON, will my funny jokes to Jack Davies who may use them next year in Mr. Babcock's classes. I, JOHNNY VENQLL, will not will Lois. I, DICK SHEPARD, will take any girl’s bandana I can get. I, BILL MAGINNIS, will my ability to get along with people to Dick Schindler. I, LEE RAY EDENS, will do anything. Three new clarinet players entered school, which added a great deal to the organization. The main fall activities consisted of playing and marching for the county fair three days. Soon afterwards was the parade and concert for Farmers’ Day. Then the band went to Denver for Denver University Band Day on October 29. The pep band played for all home football games and two away. Popular numbers were played between the acts at the senior play. In the winter and in the spring there were concerts. The pep band played for basketball games. The climax was the spring music contest. Delores LeMay, Billie Jeanne Raper, and Donna Mulvihill, all seniors, are training 30 girls in twirling and drum-majoring. A drum major and some twirlers will be selected from this group to lead the band in the fall of 1950. tyi dd' tyCee Cu6 The club was organized at the beginning of the school year with 75 girls. Conflicts caused some to drop out for the rest of the year, leaving the membership at 68. In the fall we learned to sing together in harmony and in an appealing style. There were many new to the chorus from the freshman class and from other towns. Some had never participated in a large club before. Main preparation from November on was to furnish background music for the Christmas program. In the winter there was a concert followed by the spring music contest. 0 The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is the development of agricultural leadership, co-operation and citizenship. We were always the top contenders but could never quite hit the first-place division. Our ace quarter-miler broke his ankle just before the district meet so that eliminated us from the state championship. They ranked second in the Pan-Handle B” conference and third in the North Platte Valley conference. Starting the season with only eight seasoned men, the team had a long pull but they worked hard and came through with much success. The low spot of our season was the two successive losses on successive week ends to Gering and Bayard but the high light of the season was the Sidney game when they came from behind with 19 - 7 at the half time to beat Sidney 20 - 19. James Stander, our senior tackle, was selected ‘All State” which finished a brilliant career for Jim for the Longhorns. Our honorary captains for the year were James Stander and Martin Esch. The team for 1950 will miss the services of Bill Maginnis, Delmar Tjardes, Frank Land, LeRoy Marshno, Martin Esch and James Stander whom we lose through graduation.
