THIRD ROW: Coach Tangeman, James Bowman, LaVern Cheery, David Irwin, Bud Christensen, Ronald Cortney, Jerry Strasheim, Dick Janicek, Claude Kelley, Clitus Kelley, Harlo Longmore, Russell Kellner, Delmare Tjardes, Gene Bowman. FOOTBALL 1948 The 1948 Longhorns had two distinct seasons rolled into one. The forepart of the year we met with three straight defeats at the hands of Mitchell, St. Pat's, and Chappell. It looked very much as though the Longhorns were in for one of the worst seasons on the grid-iron in years, with the toughest part of their schedule still to be played. In the fourth game we met St. Mary's of Cheyenne and came through with a 26-13 win and followed the next week with a 44-7 win over Lyman. Then we met Gering, which was the low point of our season, and were defeated 20-0. Although this was the low point of our season, it also seemed to be the turning point of the season. The next week we defeated the Bayard Tigers 15-0, and then came the high point of the season with a convincing 25-7 win over the previously undefeated Bridgeport Bulldogs. The following week Minatare was taken in stride 13-6, followed by a victory over our longest and biggest gridiron rival, Sidney 14-12. —26—
