CLASS OFFICERS Bill Leininger Marilyn Louthan Lois Robinson Gene Bowman Miss Golgart President Vice-president Secretary Treasurer Sponsor SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of '45, a band of timid (?) green freshmen eagerly thronged (anyway, we came in), to K.C.H.S. After a week of initiation, we were hardened to the brutality of the egotistical seniors. We chose Miss Desjardins to lead us past the pitfalls of the meager freshman existance. Our social activity was a Freshman Dance. After a year of abuse, we blossomed forth as Sophomores. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Kelso, we found life easier physically but harder mentally. We shocked the social world with an unexpected Sock Dance. It was an outstanding success until some upper classmen got cold feet. Six class members were chosen to serve at the Junior-Senior Banquet and attend the Prom. On the morning of September 4th, we entered the portals of learning (anyway the side door), as upper classmen. The year of 47-48 held several outstanding social activities for us. Miss Kragel directed our Junior Class Play. —9— CLASS HISTORY - Continued - - Almost Summer. With the able guidance of Miss Haas, our sponsor, we put on one of the most impressive proms ever held in K.C.H.S. The theme was Hawaiian, and the native dancers, imported ti leaves, and orchids added to the natural effect of the decorations. We might add that senior ingenuity wasn't good enough to outwit the shrewd juniors on Sneak Day. At last our goal was reached. We were Seniors. Memories of our own bitter past were kindled as we sought revenge on the lowly freshmen. We put on Atomic Blonde under Miss Swick's direction. We took a Senior Sneak Day, and a fine time was enjoyed by all. Seniors who have gone to school for thirteen years in Kimball are Marilyn Louthan, Dona Bradt, Beth Alden, and Jim Bickel. Members in Pep Club for four years are Beth Alden, Dona Bradt, Marilyn Louthan, and Dorothy Schneider. Kenny Kellner was the only four year letterman. K Club members are David Irwin, Claude Kelley, Clitus Kelley, Kenneth Kellner, Ray Pancheau, Glenn Vencill, David Janicek, Sterling Kath, Dick Wilson, Jim Bickel, Howard Barrett, Jack Stormberg, and Larry Pedrett. CLASS PROPHECY Beth Alden has been elected cheerleader at the University of Nebraska. We see her cheering for that famous football star, Kenny Kellner. The famous geologist Howard Barrett is getting along fine with his friends— the rocks. We now see Jim Bickel in the Navy with a girl in every port. In spare time he gives dancing lessons. Gene Bowman has become the driver of the Star Bus which runs from Scotts-bluff to Kimball. Somehow he always gets delayed at Harrisburg. Dona Bradt has won Rodeo fame. She is known as Calamity Jane. Margaret Buddecke is now the successful manager of the Hested's Stores, Inc. Robert Christiansen can't decide whether to take up banking or farming. Probably he will decide on the easiest. John Eby is running a gas station and is kept busy changing tires—or is it diapers? Speed demon, Harold Foos, just broke another record, also his neck. Gwen Huff is now part of the Hagen Company. She spends most of her time taking care of her little implements. David Irwin is a cartoon artist. Which is he, the cartoon or the artist? David Janicek and his wife Peggy are living happily on their farm. As yet they haven't decided what to raise. Bill Johnson is now a millionaire and has opened Johnson Hotels in all the leading cities. Danny Janicek has finally consented to let his son use his Plymouth provided that he is as careful with it as Danny always was. Sterling Frankie Kath is the new sensation of the bobby sockers. The Kelley twins, Claude and Clitus, are posing in Which Twin Has the Toni? ads. -10- CLASS PROPHECY --Continued-- Leonard Larson is making a happy living selling motors and buying cars. His establishment is at Harrisburg. Larry Pedrett is in a rut now. He has become the proud owner of his own gravel pit. Lois Peterson is happily married; we don't have to tell you the lucky person. Lois Riley is head of the telephone company and only bothers to answer personal calls. Lois Robinson has established a newspaper in Potter, since most of her interests are there. Jack Stormberg is a famous sculptor of pin-up girls. He has a hard time keeping his models. Glenn Vencill is now a famous singer; his theme song is Juanita.’ Dorothy Schneider is a stenographer sitting on her boss s knee; by the way, her boss is Ray Pancheau, who enjoys his job very much. Bill Leininger spends most of his time hunting; we won t say what! Dick Wilson has finally persuaded Dee to find a job in Canada so she can keep him company. Barbara Foote has finally made up her mind. She couldn t stay away from Columbus. Marilyn Louthan is now head boss at the dairy. She makes more in tips than in salary. Betty Wilson is happy as a wife. She is kept busy with her little truck drivers. FOOTBALL 1948 The 1948 Longhorns had two distinct seasons rolled into one. The forepart of the year we met with three straight defeats at the hands of Mitchell, St. Pat's, and Chappell. It looked very much as though the Longhorns were in for one of the worst seasons on the grid-iron in years, with the toughest part of their schedule still to be played. In the fourth game we met St. Mary's of Cheyenne and came through with a 26-13 win and followed the next week with a 44-7 win over Lyman. Then we met Gering, which was the low point of our season, and were defeated 20-0. Although this was the low point of our season, it also seemed to be the turning point of the season. The next week we defeated the Bayard Tigers 15-0, and then came the high point of the season with a convincing 25-7 win over the previously undefeated Bridgeport Bulldogs. The following week Minatare was taken in stride 13-6, followed by a victory over our longest and biggest gridiron rival, Sidney 14-12. —26— FOOTBALL -- Continued - With the passing of the 1948 season the Longhorns are going to miss the services of the following seniors: Sterling Kath, Glenn Vencill, Jack Stormberg, Dick Wilson, Kenneth Kellner, James Bickel, Dave Janicek, Pay Pancheau, Howard Barrett, Larry Pedrett, David Irwin, Gene Bowman, Claude Kelley, and Clitus Kelley. After our homecoming game with Sidney Jack Stormberg and Glenn Vencill were elected honorary co-captains by the members of the team. —27— FIRST ROW: Jack Vencill, Alfred Forsling, Eldred Westback, Bob Aue, Mike Riley, Lee Ray Edens. BASKETBALL Kimball won the North Platte Valley Conference this year in basketball for the first time since entering this conference in 1937. We won seven and lost one of our conference games. Another feature for the Longhorns this year was that they did not lose a home game. Our reserve team won 16 games while losing only one. This shows considerable promise for future Longhorn teams. The Freshman team won the Invitational Freshman tournament at Sidney. They also participated in a tournament at Mitchell, but they were eliminated by Mitchell. The Junior High Team was represented by a hard-fighting team that lacked size. They won the consolation trophy in the Sidney Junior Tournament. Mr. Blank coaches the Junior High team.
