Jo Edens —9— MEMORIES One September morn, in the year 1935, some 30 odd little beings passed through the portals of the great institution of learning, the Kimball Grade School. In those days punishment was administered with rubber hoses instead of the dictionary. The years trickled by, and we found ourselves trudging nearly a mile to school everyday. Most of us, that is. The obedient students of the brilliant class never seemed to do anything wrong, but we could never understand why every teacher quit teaching after we got through with her - - she just simply gave up! Then one bright sunny day we found ourselves not quite dry behind the ears, graduating from the 8th grade. However, we left our mark with the establishment of the 8th grade banquet. It seems they are still having trouble trying to give them. Freshman initiation was a gay affair (for the seniors, -that is)! We soon learned how to pick dandelions for sneaking with the seniors. Take this to heart, lower classmen! In our freshman year we were led by Jack McMurray and Mr. Flanders, and in our sophomore year by James White and Mr. Flanders. When we were sophomores we all went on a picnic to the Pine Bluffs Hills. During our Junior year, under the leadership of Maxine Mulvihill and Mrs. Grosshans, we gave the seniors the most spectacular (not bragging or anything) Prom ever given. A mystery-comedy play, The Night Was Dark, was put on with a howling success. We always do things in a big way. Kimball was represented at Boys' State in 1947 by Alvin Danielson and Francis Cortney. Maxine Mulvihill attended Girls' State. Leonard Sterle, one of our outstanding football players, was chosen to attend the football all-state rally at Lincoln. The class of '48 was honored also in '47 when Francis Cortney took first in the state high jump meet at Lincoln, jumping 5' 11 On the last day of school we all piled in the box of a truck and took out for the Wild Cat Hills for a picnic. After loafing all afternoon, we went to Scottsbluff to a show. As it this wasn't enough, we went to a circus. Then after a hard day we climbed back into the truck and rode home in the rain. —10— MEMORIES (CONTINUED) Our last and final year in deal old K. C. H. S. has been rather dull. We find ourselves in exceedingly great joy to be graduating after much struggle. We did give a comedy play, Me And My Shadow. The Honorable Val Peterson, Governor of Nebraska, was graduation speaker. There were only 10 who have managed to struggle through from kinder-garden. They are: Elsie Christensen, Alvin Danielson, Mary Davies, Jack McMurray, Maxine Mulvihill, Jack Russell, Charles Singleton, Myrna Taylor, Shirley Vogler, and James White. Poor Virgie S. has her worst competition with a pool table. (Wes, why don't you reform?) Juanita can t make up her mind whether to live in Kimball or Dix. Francis and wife Shirley have just willed the taxi to their son for his first date. It is the same one they used. Myrna has decided to marry Diving, so he doesn't have to drive sixty miles a day to see her. Mona has always been a Taylor fan, but now it's Chuck Taylor. Pauline was last seen riding toward Dix on a motor scooter. It seems that Bruce has a hard time keeping her in Kimball. Evelyn is the successful manager of a Graham Factory Company. Jo still likes her J's. Better decide between Jack and Jerry. Norman is the successful operator of New York's New Burlesque Show costaring Wayne Henderson and Gypsy Rose Lee. Joyce is putting to practice her knowledge gained in Beauty School, on all her little Maxted's. —12— IN THE FUTURE (CONTINUED) Jack R. was last seen riding his motorcycle to Denver and Jerry. Now in addition to washing bottles at the Dairy, Richard is washing them at home for his wife Carol. Jim D. is now publisher of his own dictionary. It is loose-leaf for convenience. Dale is now secretary and bookkeeper for the Vogue Shoppe using what he learned as a Senior in K. C. H. S. Ray is Dale's man in waiting. They both loved shorthand in their senior year and worked hard at it. LeRoy has set up a garage between Cheyenne and Kimball. Not only can you eat, but you may bowl while you wait. Janiceks seems to have fallen for the Morrill techniques used by Joan Jensen. Jack M. has been seen in all parts of the world, but there is no mate for him yet. His only companion is his little red pick-up. The new hit tune, Miles Away from Paper , was written by the young composer, Jim W. one day in shorthand class. The tune is so popular that it is being printed on boards all over the state. Due to the high cost of living and of gas Phil Schwindt has put up a permanent bunk in the Pine Bluffs Dance Hall. Delores B. is now the famous stenographer at Houghteling Grocery. Darlene B. is the well-known country school teacher living near Pine Bluffs. Mary is head of her laboratory technique class using the knowledge she gained in K. C. H. S. —13— FIRST ROW: Miss Haas. Dan Janicek. Dick Wilson. Kenny Kellner, Howard Barrett. FOOTBALL The 1947 season ended with the Longhorns winning three and losing six games. Kimball was represented by a scrappy sauad which lacked weight in certain positions. Leonard Sterle and Jim Davis were the lads who held the team together. The fine showing made by the freshmen: Linn, Clay, Good. Schindler, Larson, and others, speaks well for football in Kimball during the next three years. On offense the work of Clay, Kellner, Sterle, and Wilson was apparent Mueller, McMurray, and Davis provided good backing. On defense Sterle, Davis, Schindler, Good, Linn, Schadegg, Pancheau, and Stander played good ball. -28— FOOTBALL (CONTINUED) The seniors: Mueller, McMurray, Singleton, Sterle, Davis, and Stahla, who played most of the games, will be missed when the 1948 season rolls around. BASKETBALL This year the Longhorns had a fairly successful season; however, the team was hot and cold. We won 14 and lost 6 during the regular season of play. In the District Tournament we won 1 and lost 2. The starting regulars included Francis Cortney, our best player and captain of the team; Jack McMurray, tricky forward; Jim Mueller, rebounding guard; Dick Wilson, faking guard; Kenneth Kellner, scrappy forward; Clitus Kelley, defensive guard; and Jim Stander, tippling center. Our Freshman Team consisting of Berton Linn, Conrad Good, Donald Clay, Jerry Strasheim, and Dick Schindler show promise of becoming a winning team. The Yearlings beat Scottsbluff, Minatare, Sidney (twice), and lost only to Mitchell. The Junior High Team under the capable tutoring of Mr. Blank won the invitational Junior High Tournament at Sidney. Later they lost a close game —30— BASKETBALL (CONTINUED) to Scottsbluff and then were defeated by 3 points by Gering in the Scottsbluff Junior High Tournament.
