She is an honor guest at a dimer meeting of the local Business and Professional Women's Club, HELEN G UIBA ULT March MARGIE CORLEY May Z' WHO'S WH HELEN GUIBAULT Being President of the Drama Club Assistant Editor of the Kangaroo and an active member of NHS and the band makes Helen one of the busiest girls in school She was chosen March Girl of the Month because of her enthusiasm will ingness to work and dependability JERRY WHITE Besides serving as Editor of the 1956 Kangaroo and President of NHS Jerry was a Senior Representative to the Student Council As Vice President of the Senlor Class Jerry showed the stu dent body his willingness to work and leadership abil ity His election as Most Dependable speaks for itself CAROLINE FOWLER A very active member of the band Caroline has served three years as a twirler She has devoted her time to the Senior Class play FBLA and Choir As a result of her spirit and her enthusiasm Caroline was a delegate to Girls State She is a member of the NHS TRAVIS RIVERS With a total of twenty two A s at press time Travis is known for his outstanding scholastic ability. He has been an active member of NHS and band. Serving as President of the Library Club and Parliamentarian of the Senior Class involved a great deal of time and effort Travis was chosen March Boy-of-the-Month for his versatility in activities of KHS. PAUL PEEBLES -- As tri-captain of the '55 Kangaroos, Paul was one of the malnstays of the team, He was selected to the AA All-State Second Team, A dele- gate to Boys' State, Senior Class Treasurer, and member of NHS, Paul was selected September Boy- of-the-Month. Because of his jocular nature and pleasing personality, Paul was elected Best All-Around JACK REDING -- KI-IS' best all-around athlete, Jack is an outstanding student. As a tri-captain of the Kangaroos, he received All-State Honorable Men- tion. A delegate to Boys' State, a member of NHS Runner-Up to Best All-Around, Jack is one of the most popular boys in KHS. Elected Most Dependable, Maria has shown this quality in her work in KHS. KEITH GRIFFIN -- Because of his outstanding leader- ship ability Keith has been recognized as one of the most capable students in KHS. Serving as Student Body President kept his schedule pretty well filled, but Keith still found time to take an active part in NHS, Track, and the Annual Staff, in which he served as Business Manager, A delegate to Boys' State in 1954, Keith is truly Most Popular of KHS. DON ARMSTRONG -- Selected as December Boy-of- the -Month, Don was tri-captain of the Killeen Kanga roos. His athletic ability is not limited to football, however. He is outstanding in baseball and track. Don was a delegate to Boys' State and Runner-Up for Most Popular, CAROL NORMAN -- Busy, quiet, and hardworking, Carol is one of the KHS outstanding students. A dele- gate to Girls' State, an active member of NHS, Runner-Up to Most Popular, Carol devoted a good deal of her time to serving as Secretary of the Student Council. A cheerleader for three years, Carol has done more toward boosting the KHS spirit than al- most any other student. GAILYA TAYLOR -- Serving as Secretary of NHS and Captain of the girls' basketball team keeps Gailya very active. The latter has received most of the praise for a job well done, al- though in time and effort, the re- writing of the constitution was pro- bably the more difficult task, The council arranged for the construction of several benches to be placed about the campus for the stu- dents, and at its own expense, purchased and planted fifteen trees, grass and shrubbery. The band participates in two contests -- the state contest and Brady band festival. The Senior ensemble, made up of experienced members of the band play for the TSTA meeting on February 28. ACTIVITIES 'NEVER A DULL MOMENT' SAYS STAFF lt takes approxi- mately three weeks to get the paper ready for distribution. During the first week assign- ment sheets are made, The reporters then cover their assigned stories, type them, and turn them in to the editors. The second week finds the business man- ager getting his ads lined up, the photog- rapher scheduling pic- tures to be taken, and the page editors mak- ing up their dummies, By the end of the week all stories and ads are in and headlines have been written for all stories, The paper is then sent to press. Two days be- fore the paper comes out, the staff goes to the newspaper office to proofread. After this is done the paper is ready to roll, Friday moming the staff comes to school with just one more job -- to get the papers to the students and the teachers, Monday comes and the staff is ready to begin the same activities over once again. In October the members made a trip to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas, and in November representatives participated in a talent show sponsored by the Taylor FBLA. Mary Jo Donner, nominee in the Miss Kangaroo contest, was elected by the students to rule over the Kangaroo Court of Killeen High School. Marilyn West and Bill Lips- comb were elected as Mr. and Miss FBLA. Voting delegates to the state convention in Denton were Sylvia Weiss and Tom Young. Funds for this event were raised by cake sales. The purpose of this club is to promote dramatic activities in the school and to develop any talents in the field of entertainment that the student may have. This is accomplished by having each class perform skits for the entertainment of the club at the meetings, The mem- bers of the different classes take their turn in having charge of the program. The sponsor of this club is Mrs. Lemke, speech teacher in Killeen High School. She has had much experience in dra- matic work, as well as other types of speech activities, With the help of Mrs. Lemke, and the officers, the club has given some very profitable and entertaining activities. The Talent Show, which was sponsored by the Club early in the year, was a huge success, as was the party held at the American Legion Hall. Field trips were made during the year to the Killeen Daily Herald and to the Fort Hood Armored Sentinel, and reporters from these two papers were interviewed. Its object is to train boys for future leader- ship, and thus help to build better com- munities. Representatives from this club attended the spring meeting of the Future Nurses Clubs of Texas, held in Waco. I DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION SPQNSORS SALE OF CHRISTMAS CARDS The Distributive Education in KHS helps to pro- vide training for those students who expect to enter the field of distribution. The activities of the Distributive Education Club were numerous. During Homecoming, the organiza tion was represented in the parade by Mr. and Miss DE, who were Jan Franklin and Pat Hood. Pat was also the club nominee for Miss Kangaroo and was a runner-up for this honor. The biggest project of the year was the sale of Christmas cards, The design for the card was drawn by George Willard and was well received by the stu- dents. Richard Gautier, Tommy Gautier, Jeanne Cook, and Pat Hood were delegates to the D. E. C.A. convention in Austin, February 18 and 19, Pat Hood entered the State Sweetheart contest, and the other delegates entered the Job Interview and the Speaking contests. The annual Employer-Employee banquet was held on April 24. The program for the banquet was pre- sented by the D.
