A flashing sign told Rangerette hopefuls to smile” during tryouts in August. Smile they did — and sweat and kick and hope and cry. The 35 vacant places in the famous Rangerette ranks were filled from 116 girls trying out for the honor. Sophomores competed for officer posts during the shovvoffs, held Aug. 25. Five officers were selected from those competing. Another year began in the long tradition of the Rangerettes, coached by Miss Gussie Nell Davis. Registration . . . Can It Lead to Mass Confusion? On August 29, small confused crowds could be seen pushing through the library, selecting course cards, altering schedules and dealing with the frustration of closed and conflicting classes. For approximately 2,414 freshmen this was the beginning of college life. The 917 sophomores found registration a well practiced procedure. Along with the 519 students taking non-credit courses were 3,850 persons involved in registration. As the ordeal of registration ended, students found themselves with sore feet, strained nerves, endless information, a mountain of books and empty pockets. 20 21 Assembly Dr. Watson Retires . . . Farewell to a Friend Wesley Does It Great The Wesley Foundation once again reached into its bag of tricks and pulled out a solution to end the “hum drum” of college life. On September 21, students once again converged on the 3rd Annual Wesley Olympics. The Olympiad consisted of such events as the tricycle race, balloon bust, sack race, inchworm, three-legged race, and added to that was the excitement of a relay. The evening reached a climax with the awarding of the championship trophy to Jennifer Dorsett. 25 Wesley Co-Host a Night Filled With Spooks The fall semester of 1978 was not unlike that of any other year. Along with the school colors, fight song, and general robust spirit, were the social, professional, service, and religious clubs. On September 26, beginning at 8 o’clock in front of the Randolph Watson Library, students were introduced to the different types of organizations that are involved within the structure of Kilgore Jr. College. Those organizations represented were Circle K, Business Club, Delta Psi Omega, Engineer’s Society, Phi Theta Omega, and the Lawyers Club. Also, Young Democrats, Karate Club, Beta Chi Omega, Baptist Student Union, Zeta Phi Omega, Phi Theta Kappa, Chi Sigma Delta, Agriculture Club, and the Rodeo Club. 28 Rush Week Coke parties, formal teas, promises of initiation, sister and brotherhood, are all symbols of Rush Week which is held on the fourth and fifth weeks of the fall and spring semesters. The social clubs of KJC are Chi Sigma Delta, Phi Theta Omega, Beta Chi Omega, and Zeta Phi Omega. While the College does not foster national social fraternities and social sororities, it does encourage the organization of local social clubs under faculty supervision. A grade average of “C” is required and not less than 12 semester hours for membership. 29 KC Karate Tournament 30 Masters Gymnasium was the site of the first annual KJC Karate Tournament sponsored by the National Dixie Karate Studios and the Kilgore Jr. College Karate Club. Entrants numbering approximately 150 came from as far away as Florida, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana as well as Texas. Competition was offered in Kata, Free Sparing, Black Belt, and other phases of karate. The tournament ended in the evening with demonstrations by Mr. Ken Richardson instructor of karate here at KJC. Dorm Life Your Home Away From Home Living in a dorm is an experience unlike anything else. Once you are used to being at home with a mother who took care of ‘details’ like clean clothes, the change can be drastic. There are a number of things you can always count on. For example, you can be sure that when you wake up at seven twenty-eight, (if the shower isn’t already occupied) all of the hot water will be gone by the time you get in there. While rummaging through your closet you discover that the last clean pair of jeans you had you mistakenly let a friend borrow last night. But finally you dig up something and dash out the door managing to be only ten minutes late for class. During the course of the day, you make a few pit stops at your humble residence to pick up books and maybe even relax for a minute or two. Before long, though, it’s off to class. The bell rings, signaling the end of the day and you gather your things and begin the journey home. As you drag into your room, the thought suddenly hits you what a disaster area it really is in your rush that morning you left the bed unmade. The dirty clothes you've been promising yourself you’d wash are heaped in a corner. Scraps from yesterday’s late night snack from Colonel Sanders’ remain on your desk, along with other assorted junk. The trash can is overflowing, dirty glasses line the sink and books are piled carelessly across the floor. And your side is only half as bad as your roommate’s! Suffice it to say you decide to clean up. So goes the life of the dorm resident. But it isn’t always so bad. The fun parties and pranks usually outweigh the hassles more important, you gain your independence, make life long friends, and generally have the time of your life. 32 33 A Day in 6:30 a.m. Alarm clock rings. Oh dear, it’s Monday again. I’ve so much to do in so little time! Shower, get dressed, grab something to eat, and . . . oh yes! I have to buy gas! (Forget breakfast on a day when the gas tank is on empty.)” 7:30 a.m. “Where are my keys?!? I promised myself that this week I would arrive at school early enough to find a parking place on campus instead of three blocks away. 8:15 a.m. “Well, it’s happened again! I can’t give my instructors the old ‘I couldn’t find a parking place’ routine again! (They’ve started offering to call me at 5:00 a.m. so that I can make it to campus before anyone else!) 12:00 noon. “Now, let's see . . . with no cash left in my wallet, (Remember — I got gas this morning.) I suppose I’ll run home for lunch — besides I forgot my books for my afternoon classes!” 1:00 p.m. “Now, now — where to park? I’m getting dizzy going around and around this full parking lot! But I can’t be late for class!!! Let’s see — Oh, what the heck — no one walks on this side- 34 the Life of a Commuter walk anyway . . . 4:00 p.m. “Well, I made it through one more day of classes! Now I’m homeward bound! What?!? A ticket!!! It’s a vicious cycle: penalized for being late to class and penalized for being determined to get there on time! In October an enchanting fantasy came to the Dodson Auditorium stage when the KC Fine Arts Department presented “Camelot. The Lerner and Lowe musical featured Kelly Daniels as King Arthur and Pam Cooper as his Lady Guenevere. 36 of Fine Arts ewe y Lemer ure King DODSON AUDITORIUM October 26, 27, 28,1978 7:30 p.m. imiiicd by TAMS W1TMARK Directed by Bill Holder, “Camelot” told the tale of brave knights, the noble deeds of King Arthur and the bittersweet love affair of Guenevere and Sir Lancelot. The stage sparkled with superb sets, lovely costumes and an excellent production. 37 Ranger Pep Rallies 1979 RANGER HOMECOMING 78 The festivities of homecoming 78 began on Thursday morning, October 12, with the annual pep rally and the election of the seven finalists for the Ranger homecoming court. From among the thirty-three entries the following young women were named to the court. Faye Walstead of the Engineers Society. Trela Van Hoy of the Rangerettes. Jennifer Dorsett of Phi Theta Kappa and Leslie Blount of the Business Club. Priscilla Perales representing Phi Theta Omega was crowned Homecoming Queen of 1978. Queen Priscilla and her court were presented during pregame ceremonies at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium on October 21. The 1978 presentation also included the crowning of the Coming Home Queen Marlene Swin-gler. Other honors noted during the night were Ex-Student of the year Marita Ater and Ex-Teacher of the year Mrs. Annie Lou Ballerd. The evening's atmosphere remained pleasant as the Rangers defeated the Henderson County Cardinals 57-21. 41 42 Students Choose Ranger Beauties Kilgore College was presented 34 of the most beautiful girls on campus during the Ranger Beauty Election, November 7. Students were presented with the impossible task of choosing eight as Ranger Beauties. The program, sponsored by the Student Affairs Congress and the Fashion Merchandising Department, is an annual event held to choose representatives to be featured in the Rangerette Revels. The audience was well entertained by the Swing Choir. Mrs. Chris Stewart, organist, provided background music for the beauties as they were presented. Kevin Jackson, President of SAC, was Master of Ceremonies. Martha King and Bonny Edmond, Instructors of Fashion Merchandising, and Joe Webb, Director of Student Affairs, were in charge of staging. Ranger Beauties Representing Delta Psi Omega is Lane Stuart, a Sophomore from Sapula, Oklahoma. Lana is majoring in theatre and has been active in eight Kilgore Junior College productions. Rebecca Williamsis a sophomore from Pine Tree representing the BSU. She is a member of the Business Club and also a Ranger Cheerleader. Kara Lisa Williams represents the Oil and Gas Club. She is a sophomore from Longview majoring in Speech Pathology. Kara Lisa is also a member of the Ranger Band. Karen Bassett represents the Business Club. She is a freshman from Henderson and is majoring in Secretarial Science. Karen is also a member of the BSU. 44 Jennifer Dorsett is a sophomore from Henderson majoring in Biology. She represents Davis Hall, is a member of P.T.K., Young Republications, and was a member of the Homecoming court as well as being a cheerleader. Representing the Ranger Band is Susan Parish of White Oak. Susan is a sophomore majoring in Psychology. She is also a Kilgore majorette, SAC vice-president, BSU member and the 1977 Homecoming Queen. Lorri Parrish represents the Rangerettes. She is a sophomore from Kilgore majoring in dance and has also been involved in Kilgore Junior College musicals. - Priscilla Perales is a sophomore from La Pryor. She is majoring in Home Economics and is also a member of Zeta Phi Omega, Spanish Club, Rangerettes and is the 1978 Homecoming Queen. 45 THE INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS RANGER BAND SPIRIT OF 78 47 Garland Bowl Win Climaxed a Great Year After winning the Texas Junior College Football Conference, the Kilgore Rangers went on to defeat Jones County Mississippi 30-0 and win the Garland Bowl. Jones County had come into the game as the champion of the Mississippi Junior College League with a 10-1 record, but KC used its devastating ground game, a third quarter 23-point blitz and a rock-ribbed defense to post the triumph. During the third quarter rusher Michael Wright and fullback Jimmy Kegler pounded out 231 yards between them, and fullback Kenneth Sessions added 69. Wright scored a touchdown and Kegler scored two, including one on a 38-yard scamper. The Rangers then scored once again by an intercepted pass from M. J. Marble resulting in a final score of KC 30, Jones 0. Just as Kilgore’s offense was vital to the game, so was its powerful defense. The Ranger defense allowed just 121 total yards, 92 of it on the ground. Jones moved into KC territory just once in each half. 51 Adversity, which, like the toad, ugly and venomous, wears yet a precious jewel in his head. Kilgore’s Rangerettes and Ranger Band practiced their half-time performance December 31 on an ice-laden field, and marched in a freezing Cotton Bowl Parade the following day. Celebrity parade hosts Larry Hagman (of “Dallas”), Judy Narton-Taylor ( The Waltons ), and Loretta Suit (“M A S H”) praised the Kilgore participants on nationwide television, and the Rangerettes and Ranger Band were featured in the Cotton Bowl half-time performance. 57 THE SUPERSTARS OF KC 58 Seven teams competed in the second Collegiate Superstar Competition held at K.C. on November the eleventh. The event sponsored by Anheuser-Busch and R K distributors of Longview was developed to be much like the Superstars of television. The teams consisting of six members and two alternates, competed in events such as the 880 relay, volleyball, frisbee relay, obstacle course, round of bud, and tug-o-war. The Black Knights composed of Darcus Bell, Manuel Johnson, Sharon Smith, Bruce Thompson. Terry Dillard, Geneva Bell, David Canida, and Lajuanta Mitchell prevailed as the 1978 Superstar Champions. The Muskateers took second place while Bogay's Best and the Spoilers took third and fourth. Other teams competing were The Who, Tough Staff and The Good, Bad Boodie. “CAPS OF WHITE” The dream of every one of us is coming true tonight when we say the pledge of Nightingale and receive our caps of white. And, at this special time, it must be clear to each of us That with these caps, there also goes a heavy responsibility and trust. With the eyes of an eagle, we must watch those entrusted to our care. Silent as an oak, we must be of the confidences we may share. When there is a need for strength, we must have strength. Side Picture: Doug Boggus — 2nd Place, Mike Osborne — 1st Place. 67 3:%m, A Place to Rest, Study, Eat or Find a Friendly Face 68 69 Audience Raves Revels ’79 71 “It Was a Good Time” 75 Business Administration Division In the formative years of Kilgore College, it was not unusual to see a shorthand class meeting under the trees on the campus while typing and accounting classes were conducted in a nearby church building. However, as the college facilities were established, the Business Administration Division occupied two classrooms, then four, then an entire floor: and eventually an entire building. Since September, 1965, classes have been held in a modern, attractive Business Administration Building located on Brook Drive. The Division is headed by a director, a Data Processing and General Business Department chairman, and an Office Occupations Department chairman. These three people and seventeen other instructors make a total of twenty instructors in the Division. Courses offered within the division have increased from twelve during the first year (1935-36) to fifty-three in the year 1978-79. The Business Administration Division serves the needs of students interested in one and two-year cer- tificates as well as the needs of students who are taking the first two years of a four-year course of study. Also, students who wish to increase or update their knowledge and skills in business may take selected courses of interest. The Division is aware of the changing times and. in keeping with the change, consistently updates the programs of study offered. Each year new courses are offered to meet the needs of industry and education, with the most recent additions to the business curriculum including income tax accounting, internship in data processing, human relations, legal transcription, medical transcription. and word processing. The Business Administration Division also updates teaching methods in order to better meet students’ needs. Some of the more recent innovations include individualized. self-paced instruction in keypunching which utilizes slide-tape presentations and computer-assisted instruction in a variety of other courses. 77 78 .jA oomIi Engineering — Science Division Science and Engineering programs at Kilgore College are strictly university parallel and are specifically designed to give our students the same science and engineering courses that they would receive at a major university. Students in our programs have transferred as many as 70 hours to the University of Texas, Texas A M University, Louisiana State University, The University of Houston, Stephen F. Austin, and East Texas State University. Students in our engineering-science division receive a top notch education that includes basic and advanced mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, agriculture, geology, engineering graphics, introduction to computer programming, and other engineering courses. Currently, there are two optional programs in our division that offer the students an opportunity to learn at their own rate. These programs are in the areas of basic mathematics and in general biology. Both programs have received praise from the students and faculty. We rest assured that these special methods of teaching are very effective and in most cases students are able to cover more material than is possible in a traditional course. This is made possible through the special study carols and equipment that is available in our learning center in the library. In the library, computer assisted instruction is available to students. In this program students may select from a variety of modules dealing with basic mathematics, biology, chemistry, geology, and engineering graphics. Computer assisted instruction is very special because the computer has been programmed to react to the students responses. Upon completion of a pre-professional program in science, our students can go directly into the third year of study at virtually any major university. 79 Fine Arts Division In order to involve as many students as possible, productions of the Fine Arts Division are open to the entire student body — both majors and non-majors. In addition, Fine Arts courses are offered as part of the continuing education program. Small classes and individual instruction give students the foundation for developing their best potential. Opportunities for performance are many and varied for all students through a very active theatrical and musical schedule which is enthusiastically supported by the entire community as well as the faculty and student body. Modern, air-conditioned facilities house the three departments of the Fine Arts Division — Art, Music, and Theater — including the Van Cliburn Auditorium which is used for small productions. The Dodson Auditorium, which has excellent acoustics, seats 1600 people and is used for large productions. This facility is one of the finest of its kind in East Texas. Communications Division The Communications Division which includes English, French, German, Spanish, speech, broadcasting, journalism, and philosophy is one of the largest divisions on campus. It offers a broad base for several large fields of interest, and many students who have not decided on a major elect to take courses in this division. In addition to strengthening the basic skills of reading, grammar, and composition so vital to career preparation, these courses provide the means for exchanging ideas, desires, and dreams. The interdisciplinary nature of communications attempts to blend the areas it represents into meaningful experiences that are practical and yet aesthetic to give students better foundations for entry into a variety of studies and professions. 82 Social Science Division The Social Science Division offers a variety of courses in Anthropology, geography, government, history, psychology and sociology. These courses are designed to meet requirements for graduation from state-sup-ported colleges and universities in Texas. They also provide the foundation for meeting degree requirements for social science and other liberal arts majors. The Social science Division utilizes extensive audio-visual facilities to supplement its courses, and students gain first-hand knowledge of the application of principles discussed in class through field trips and lectures by guest speakers. With the average class being approximately 30, students receive individual attention. They get to know the instructors personally and are encouraged to visit with instructors during conference hours. Instructors sponsor subject-related clubs such as the Campus Democrats, Campus Republicans, and the Lawyers Club. 86 Physical Education Division The Physical Education Division attempts to offer a broad curriculum of activities that will appeal to every student. The philosophy of the division is to encourage students to learn and to become active in skills that will allow participation for a life time. Therefore, many lifetime sports are included in the program. The facilities available on campus are two gymnasiums, eight lighted tennis courts, a heated swimming pool, four handball courts, a gymnastics room, and a dance studio. In addition, the college uses a 32 lane bowling alley and a nine hole golf course which are located off campus. Our primary objective is to provide a service program which consists of physical education courses needed to meet the requirements of all students attending Kilgore College. A variety of activities are included in this service program. It consists of five basic programs: aquatics, body conditioning, dance, individual and dual sports and team sports. Most of these courses are coeducational. This program includes activity courses required of freshmen and sophomore physical education majors, a specialized course and a club and a wide variety of activity courses. 87 Occupational Education Division The purposes of the Occupational Education Division of Kilgore College are: 1. To provide basic instruction and adequate preemployment training for students preparing for positions in industry requiring high degrees of skill and technical knowledge. 2. To provide students majoring in other divisions of the college the opportunity to supplement their work as the need may arise. 3. To assist students in selecting careers in order to live fuller lives and better assume the responsibilities of American Citizenship. 4. To provide instruction that will extend, or improve the existing occupational competence of employed persons. The Occupational Education Division maintains contact with industry for the purposes of up-dating programs; and to provide employment opportunities for the graduates. Each program has its recommended course of study which is based on the needs of the specific industry. 89 Continuing Education Through its continuing education division, Kilgore College provides opportunities for adults to prusue, or resume, intellectual interests, to increase their vocational competence, to develop worthwhile hobbies, and to improve the quality of their lives as individuals and as citizens. Trade courses are offered in all trades or skilled occupations for which there is sufficient demand. These courses are designed to satisfy the needs of specific groups of workers from the trades, to teach them more about their jobs, thereby increasing their productivity and assuring them more opportunities for advancement. Hobby courses for the enrichment of leisure-time activities constitute a valid facet of continuing education and, for the increasing number of adults who have more leisure time than ever before, this is an area of tremendous importance. The Continuing Education Division serves the community by arranging graduate and upper level courses offered, on the Kilgore campus, by other institutions of higher education. 90 KC at Longview 91 Most Representative 94 Trela VanHoy Students 1978-79 Kevin Jackson Jackson, Van Hoy Names Most Representative The Most Representative Students of Kilgore College were selected by faculty members in late February. Students are chosen on the basis of excellence in scholarship, character, and participation in extracurricular activities. This year receiving a student’s highest honor were Trela Van Hoy and Kevin Jackson. Trela is a sophomore from Shreveport, Louisiana, majoring in Secondary Education. She is the captain of the Rangerettes, and was second runner-up for Miss Kilgore. Trela is a member of Wesley Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa, Circle K, and German Club. She plans to attend Baylor or Louisiana Tech and get a degree in education. She hopes to have her own drill team someday. Kevin Jackson is also a sophomore, from Longview and is a Communications major. Kevin is both President of the Sophomore Class and of the German Club. Kevin is a member of Chorale, Phi Theta Kappa, and the Texas Junior College Association of Student Government. A Beta Chi Omega member, Bobby is majoring in Physical Education. He is also active in intramural sports and Circle K. 1 le is from Gladewater. Sherri Alford represents Cosmetology in Who’s Who. Sherri is a Henderson resident, majoring in Cosmetology. Her hobbies include painting, music, and writing. Tony Bass was named as Who’s Who in Mid-Management. Tony is a Mid-Management major from Kilgore. His hobby is reading. Tina Belflower was selected in the field of Chemistry. A Pharmacy major from Longview, Tina is active in Phi Theta Kappa and the Para-Med Club. Annette Bennett was named Who’s Who in Women’s Physical Education. Annette is a Physical Education major from Kilgore. She is a member of GALS and enjoys cooking, sports and reading. Gloria Branch represents General Business in Who’s Who. Gloria, a Longview resident, is majoring in General Business. She is secretary of the Business Club. 102 Jona Ellis was elected to represent Agriculture. Jona, an Agriculture Education major, is President of the Agriculture Club and Vice President of the Texas Junior College Agriculture Association. Jona is also active in Phi Theta Kappa and the Rodeo Club. Sandra Florence represents the Photography Department. Sandra is a Photography major from Overton. A wife and mother of three, Sandra is active in Phi Theta Kappa and is Editor of THE RANGER. Cheryl Griffin was selected as Who’s Who in Secretarial Science. Cheryl is a'Secretarial Science major and is a member of both Phi Theta Kappa and the Business Club. She is from White Oak. 103 John Guy represents History in Who’s Who. He is a Pre-Law major from Monticello, Indiana. John is Vice President of Beta Chi Omega. Roger Hemphill was named a Physics Department’s Who’s Who student. Roger is an Electrical Engineering major from Longview. He is active in the Engineering Club and he enjoys electronics and gardening. Jessie Herndon was selected to represent Automotive Mechanics. Jessie is an Automotive Mpir.hanipQ mninr from I.nnovipw 104 John Hines was selected as the Industrial Electronics representative. John is an Industrial Electronics major from Longview. He enjoys hunting and fishing, and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Eva Koonce was named Who’s Who in Operating Room Technology. An Operating Room Technology major, Eva is a member of Chi Sigma Delta and the Para-Med Club. She is from Gladewater. Billy Lang represents Electronic Technology in Who's Who. A Kilgore resident, Billy’s major is Electronic T echnology. 105 Raye Nell Martin was selected as Who’s Who in Government. Raye Nell is a Pre-Law major and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She is a Longview resident. Barbara McCollum represents Nursing. A Longview resident, she is a member of Texas State Nursing Association and enjoys singing and dancing. A1 McCool is representing the Accounting Department. A1 is an Accounting major from Gilmer. V_______________________J 161 ± OPENERS PROMISED A GOOD SEASON 163 Kilgore 34 — Wharton 0 Jim Miller’s Kilgore Rangers start the season off right on September 9 by beating Wharton 34-0. Kilgore’s defense kept Wharton out of Ranger territory until only 11:17 minutes were left in the game. Michael Wright came out on top in rushing with 103 yards on 12 carries, averaging a first down in almost every play. His electrifying, 50-yard TD run on an option pitch play with 2:51 left in the game had the crowd in a frenzy. The victory over Wharton was just the beginning of many good things to come. Kilgore 3 — Navarro 0 Retiring Kilgore College President Randolph Watson was honored September 16 in St. John’s Stadium. Speeches by Kilgore Mayor Foster T. Bean and Kilgore College President Stewart McLaurin paid tribute to Dr. Watson, and a special presentation by the Ranger Band and Ran-gerettes was dedicated to the former president. An exceptional defensive performance and a 38-yard field goal by freshman Kenneth Sam propelled the No. 8-ranked Rangers to victory. All-TJCFC noseguard Roger Adams, the Ranger's lone homegrown player, also recovered a fumble to stop a Navarro drive at the Kilgore 35 with 3:45 left in the third quarter. Quarterback Ricky Hardin completed three of 14 passes for 65 yards. All-American split-end David Scott saw double coverage most of the night but still managed a brilliant 39-yard fingertip reception. Kilgore left St. John’s stadium with a 3-0 victory over Navarro, projecting the Rangers into a higher slot on the NJCAA poll. 164 Kilgore 21 — Henderson County 3 September 23 found the KC Rangers in Athens, where they faced the Henderson County Cardinals. Henderson County picked up the first points in a defensive first half, following Sam Choice’s return of a Brian McFarlin punt to the Cardinal 39. The Cards took the ball only as far as the KC 24, where the Cardinal kicker booted a 41-yard field goal to give them a 3-0 lead. The Rangers then mounted a nine play, 88 yard drive to take the first half lead. At the third and three from the Cardinal 41, Sessions bolted over the left guard for his six points of the evening. Sam’s pat kick was good and the Rangers led 7-3. During the third period a combined effort of Wommack, Sessions and Sam produced a 14-3 lead. The final scoring of the evening came on a five-play 67-yard drive. Michael Wright scampered in and Sam’s kick was good, ending the scoring at 21-3. 165 MIDSEASON LOOKS GREAT Kilgore 23 — Blinn 3 The Rangers displayed their winning spirit September 28 when they faced the Blinn Buccaneers. KC opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal by freshman Kenneth Sam. The Rangers saw action again when Jimmy Kegler ran up the middle at the 2:08 mark. The play was aided by a crushing lead block by fullback Ken Sessions, who picked up over 20 yards during the thrust. Sam then crashed in on the point, making it 10-3. KC regained possession on their own 41, and the scoreboard was revamped two snaps later. Kegler gained nine on first down, then Wright hit through the Buc front and sprinted 50 yards for the tally. The final touchdown came when Roger Adams pounced on a Blinn fumble at the B-26 with 11:13 left. Six plays later, Wright went through a hole for the final five yards. Sam connected on the extra point. Kilgore 31 — Tyler 10 The Rangers triumphed once again over arch rival Tyler Jr. College by defeating the Apaches 31-10 before a capacity crowd. With only 15 minutes left in the game, TJC scored against the Kilgore defense, but it was too late for the Apaches. Ranger tailback Michael Wright punched across three touchdowns on the ground and wide receiver David Scott pulled in a 39-yard aerial from quarterback Ricky Hardin to stake a 31-3 lead. 166 RANGER DEFENSE STOPS TOUGH BULLDOGS, KILGORE WINS 7-0 The Rangers found themselves in a deadlock as they entered the fourth quarter against Navarro. The score was 0-0. With 8:10 left on the clock, nose-guard Roger Adams pounced on a Navarro fumble at the 15-yard line. The ball was then moved inside Navarro’s 5-yard line on three runs by Kenneth Sessions. After Sessions’ first down, Hardin charged through the middle five yards for the score. Kenneth Sam booted the extra point and the Rangers were left with a 7-0 advantage. 167 KILGORE 57 — HENDERSON COUNTY 21 168 Henderson County left the Ranger Homecoming feeling anything but joy, for within the first 15:17 span K.C. placed 34 points on the scoreboard. Before the night came to an end the KC Rangers had set a record win of 57-21 over Henderson County. Michael Wright became the league’s top rusher by pounding out 206 yards on 29 carries, while All-American split-end candidate David Scott caught eight passes for 180 yds. including three scores. Quarterback Ricky Hardin registered one of his finest performances by completing 14 of 20 passes for 252 yards and fourTD’s. In all, Kilgore amassed 585 yards, 333 on the ground and 252 through the airways. Henderson County resulted in only 188 total yards. KILGORE 34 — WHARTON 0 The Rangers entered the eighth game of the season against Wharton with a 7-0 record. During the first half Sessions ran for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Rangers’ first score of the evening resulted from Ricky Hardin scoring a strike moments before Wharton could recover threw a 48-yard scoring toss to All-American Split-end Candidate David Scott, as K.C. overcame a listless opening period for a 20-0 lead at halftime. Although Kilgore did not score in the third quarter, Wharton had only 15 yards and fell behind 33-0 when Wright spun away from a Pioneer defender and ran 11 yards with only 9:46 left in the game. 169 KILGORE 39 — BLINN 27 Blinn Buccaneers were up against a number 1-ranked Kilgore team on November 4. Kilgore fans saw a superb performance when Michael Wright rushed 292 yards on 35 carries and scored four touchdowns. Despite the excellent offense, it took three incredible defensive plays for KC to pull out a 20 point fourth period explosion. With the Blinn Bucs ahead 27-26, noseguard Roger Adams came up with a fumble recovery. Moments after the fumble QB Ricky Hardin hit David Scott with a third down pass. Fullback Ken Sessions got the go ahead TD from three steps. A two point conversion was tried but failed, leaving the score at 32-27. The game was still open when Eddy Graf scooped up a fumble by a Blinn Buc. Wright then dashed the distance on an option play from Hardin and scored. Kenneth Sam toed the final point with 3:05 left on the clock. 170 KILGORE 28 s. The score was t: less than four 76-vard drive November 11 proved to be a day of reckoning fj times during their bout with Tyler. But the Apaches came back with a 93-yard scoring thrust — the longest drive against KC during the regular season. Tyler scored a TD on a 66-yard pass but KC came back with a 14-play, 81-yard drive to regain the Wright then sapped the thrust with a 9-yard run and the score became 14-7 when Sam kicked the extra point. Tyler scored once more, but KC came back fighting. Michael Wright dashed into the end zone on a 6-yard sprint. The Rangers were now 21-14, Tyler rebounded soon after with a three play scoring drive. Another touchdown each for Kilgore and TJC brought the Rangers’ record to nine wins, zero losses and one tie. 171 KC Rangers No. 1 The Kilgore Ranger football team is truly an outstanding group of young men. In the year of 1978, they became not only the Texas Junior College Football Conference Champions for the second straight year, but also the Number One J. C. Gridwire Team. It was not a surprise when ten men were named to the All-Conference team and five were named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American Team. The defense and offense each proved its ability by placing five members on the All-Conference Team roster. The defensive unit consists of David York, Line Backer; Charles Champine, Tackle; Ike Griffin, End; Kyle Cunningham, Free Safety; and Roger Adams, Nose Guard. The offensive unit consists of Roger Cannon, Guard; Andy Golden, Center; David Scott, Split End; Michael Wright, Tailback; and Ricky Hardin, Quarterback. Ricky was also named Most Valuable Player in the conference. In early December it was announced that Michael Wright and Roger Adams had been named to the first team of the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American Team. David Scott was named to the second team, while Charles Champine, David York, and Ricky Hardin received Honorable Mention. Kyle Cunningham the only freshman on the Ranger team to make All-Conference also was named to the first team of the J. C. Gridwire All-American Team. These young men were not the only recipients of honors this season. Coach Jim Miller was named Texas Junior College Football Conference Coach of the Year for the second straight year. Stewart McLaurin is a man of warmth and humor yet he is one who readily accepts the burdens of responsibility. As students sit within his office, Dr. McLaurin talks to them not only sincerely but also as a friend. He expresses many beliefs and ideas, but one thought that remains clear is his desire for students to know that he is human and touchable, though he claims the title of president.
