26 Hopefuls chosen Rangerettes as 24 named alternates Aug. 23 c. Each year they return. They work long hours for two weeks — stretching, smiling, polishing, crying and praying. What is their goal? Each has in her mind the hope of joining the ranks of the world famous Kilgore Rangerettes. Rangerette pre-training began Sunday, Aug. 12 with a get-acquainted tea in the Faculty Lounge of the Administration Building. Orientation began that night. Miss Gussie Nell Davis, director, briefed them on Rangerette tradition and responsibility. The culmination of two weeks' work came at 1:30 p.m., Aug. 23, when 26 girls were chosen to fill the ranks. Also chosen were 24 alternates. Friday night, Aug. 25, Renee Reese of Austin was selected captain of the Rangerettes. Named lieutenants were Kathy Barbour, Mesquite; Deanne Harris, Texarkana; Belinda Loredo, San Antonio and Marsha Coogan, Dallas. The new Rangerettes were presented to the public for the first time, and the returning sophomores gave a performance that night. 15

Three registration dates enable faculty to enroll 3,906 students Advance registration was held April 9 — 20 for students enrolled in the College. Some 850 students completed the five steps involved to preregister. They began with visits to their assigned counselor to plan a course of study and to receive a time assigned for registration. On the day assigned, each student picked up a permit to register in the Office of the Registrar. From there, they picked up their course of study and prepared a schedule in LA 116. The next step was the Library for yearbook and identification pictures. Then they returned to the Office of the Registrar for schedule approval and to turn in each form. Early registration for new students ran from July 24 to August 10. New students had two more steps to follow. They paid their fees and then reported to the Student Service Center to get their ID cards. Regular registration was August 28 — 30. After it was all over, 3,906 students were enrolled in classes during the day, at night and in extension courses held for the first time in Daingerfield, Lone Star, Longview, Marshall, Ml. Pleasant and Pittsburg. E. 17
