26 Hopefuls chosen Rangerettes as 24 named alternates Aug. 23 c. Each year they return. They work long hours for two weeks — stretching, smiling, polishing, crying and praying. What is their goal? Each has in her mind the hope of joining the ranks of the world famous Kilgore Rangerettes. Rangerette pre-training began Sunday, Aug. 12 with a get-acquainted tea in the Faculty Lounge of the Administration Building. Orientation began that night. Miss Gussie Nell Davis, director, briefed them on Rangerette tradition and responsibility. The culmination of two weeks' work came at 1:30 p.m., Aug. 23, when 26 girls were chosen to fill the ranks. Also chosen were 24 alternates. Friday night, Aug. 25, Renee Reese of Austin was selected captain of the Rangerettes. Named lieutenants were Kathy Barbour, Mesquite; Deanne Harris, Texarkana; Belinda Loredo, San Antonio and Marsha Coogan, Dallas. The new Rangerettes were presented to the public for the first time, and the returning sophomores gave a performance that night. 15
