It takes a rare kind of person to make a teacher. He must possess the qualities of intellect, humor, patience, optimism, enthusiasm, creativity and love. His personality is a split one — master, teacher and friend. A portrait of this teacher is one who can awaken the student's mind and guide him along the road to learning. Kilgore College is indeed fortunate to have a faculty of teachers such as this. 10 11 12 The Story August 1973 — May 1974 ) 3 26 Hopefuls chosen Rangerettes as 24 named alternates Aug. 23 c. Each year they return. They work long hours for two weeks — stretching, smiling, polishing, crying and praying. What is their goal? Each has in her mind the hope of joining the ranks of the world famous Kilgore Rangerettes. Rangerette pre-training began Sunday, Aug. 12 with a get-acquainted tea in the Faculty Lounge of the Administration Building. Orientation began that night. Miss Gussie Nell Davis, director, briefed them on Rangerette tradition and responsibility. The culmination of two weeks' work came at 1:30 p.m., Aug. 23, when 26 girls were chosen to fill the ranks. Also chosen were 24 alternates. Friday night, Aug. 25, Renee Reese of Austin was selected captain of the Rangerettes. Named lieutenants were Kathy Barbour, Mesquite; Deanne Harris, Texarkana; Belinda Loredo, San Antonio and Marsha Coogan, Dallas. The new Rangerettes were presented to the public for the first time, and the returning sophomores gave a performance that night. 15 B. Some 850 students completed the five steps involved to preregister. They began with visits to their assigned counselor to plan a course of study and to receive a time assigned for registration. On the day assigned, each student picked up a permit to register in the Office of the Registrar. From there, they picked up their course of study and prepared a schedule in LA 116. The next step was the Library for yearbook and identification pictures. Then they returned to the Office of the Registrar for schedule approval and to turn in each form. Early registration for new students ran from July 24 to August 10. New students had two more steps to follow. They paid their fees and then reported to the Student Service Center to get their ID cards. Regular registration was August 28 — 30. After it was all over, 3,906 students were enrolled in classes during the day, at night and in extension courses held for the first time in Daingerfield, Lone Star, Longview, Marshall, Ml. Pleasant and Pittsburg. Psychology and sociology teach a basic understanding of individual and group relations. Mathematics provides not only a basis for local, national and world economy, but a way of assessing values in a finite form. All are important parts of the Liberal Arts Division. Marlin Edwards gives history assistance Becky Stewart. II Debbie Caffey asks oris Bolt a question about the U.S. map. Solon Holt observes Riley E. Lord taking a test. D. Elizabeth Ponder helps Pam Davis with her German. E. Steve Reed and Penny Wilson listen as Elwyn Bone explains a research paper. 115 It's finished! It is an anxiously awaited day in May when the yearbooks arrive. The staff wonders how the book will be received, and students want to see how this year's picture turned out. The Ranger is published by Taylor Publishing Company in Dallas. Students are selected for the staff by ability and eagerness to work. They write and arrange the annual. Mrs. Margaret M. Miller is faculty advisor, and David Richards handles the photography. Rebecca Powers, sophomore, is editor. Associate editor, freshman Becky Stewart, helps oversee the big task. Jason Searcy and Al Goforth, both sophomores, write sports copy. Tina Todd, Anne Marshall and Karen Harrison, freshmen, spend many hours selling ads in the East Texas area. Many hours during the week, at night and on week-ends are spent in preparing a yearbook. We hope the efforts are appreciated. 116 V Becky Stewart chooses a Ranger Beauty transparency for publication in THE RANGER. B. Tina Todd bills the advertisers. C. Al Goforth crops a basketball team picture. D. Rebecca Powers draws a final layout. E. Jason Searcy types the football captions. 117 The Record August 1973-May 1974 119 William Terrell Accounting John Cobb Agriculture Who's Who James Draper Behavioral Science itfjf Doug Chandler Biological Science 120 Steven Wolf Chemistry Curtis Plaxco Airline Donna Walker Art Loletia Taliaferro Cosmetology Kenneth Freeman Automotive Engines Sue Ann Plummer Data Processing Bonnie Bomer Commercial Art Farzin Kohanloo Engineering-Science Steven Moorman 122 Government Rochelle Turner Geology Martha Dauster General Business Marsha Majors Library Science Kathy Endsley Foreign-Language Rebecca Powers Journalism 123 Janice Hamilton Mathematics Jay Downs Men's P.E. Watson, a busy president Dr. Randolph Clark Watson began his association with Kilgore College in 1945 as a teacher of government and history. In 1946, he became chairman of the Social Science Department, and in 1947, he was made director of the Technical Vocational Division. He served as Dean of the College from 1953-1964 and became president on July 31,1964. Under his guidance, the College has grown from 12 brick structures valued at five million dollars to a campus of 28 acres valued in excess of 12 million dollars with a replacement value in excess of 25 million dollars. The newest addition to the campus is the Engineering-Science Building which opened for classes on Feb. 18. Renovation plans are underway for the old Engineering Science Building. Dr. Watson has been the recipient of many honors during his years as administrator. He received an award in 1966 from Henderson High School for his accomplishments as the outstanding ex-student. In 1968, he was named Man of the Year by the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce and was listed in Personalities of the South. In 1969, the Texas House of Representatives of the 61st Legislature passed a resolution in appreciation to Dr. Randolph C. Watson for his outstanding service to Texas and Texans. A leading educator, administrator and distinguished citizen of Texas, Dr. Watson has been the guiding hand that has made Kilgore College the nation's leading junior college. A. Dr. R. C. Watson. 8. For his devotion to youth, his dedication to responsibility and his unique sense of humor. mm Wmm ;i'(p 270 The Closing LEARNING — what is involved, how it is done and who aids in the process — is the theme of the 1974 Ranger. Look through its pages. By looking over the coverage of day to day activities and a record of the people involved in the'74 school year, you can evaluate your year. But you must also evaluate yourself. When the last page is turned, it is you who will know how your year was spent and what it was that you learned. 271 Yearbook editors never have an easy job, but having worked together on the yearbook in high school, we knew what it meant — work, work, work. Our task was made easy by a willing and capable staff. We would like to take this space to express our appreciation. Thank you: Mrs. Margaret Miller — sponsor, teacher, co-worker, friend. Mr. David Richards — a good photographer, creative and easy to work with. Wayne Smith, Angela Jenkins and Dwayne Blackmon — able assistants to Mr. Richards. Jason Searcy — editor of THE FLARE who found time in his busy schedule to help us in so many ways. Al Goforth and Bucky Burch — sportswriters who covered that portion of the year for us. Tina Todd, Anne Marshall and Karen Harrison — advertising managers who spent many afternoons on the road selling ads for us. Mr. Ed McMeans — Taylor Publishing Representative who checked pages and gave needed advice. Laurie Macmillan and Patti Moseley — typists whose fingers worked fast and furious on the class section. Faculty and students of Kilgore College whose cooperation was greatly appreciated. Rebecca Powers — editor Becky Stewart — associate editor
