GRI' ady N of N S pain RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ SOMOZA Barcelona, the city where I live, has a pop- ulation of nearly three million people and is the second largest city in Spain. It is situated on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. We have a good climate, rather hot in summer and cold in winter. However, we have no snow. Our schools are rather different from the American ones. The basic difference is that boys and girls do not go to the same school. Also, we take more subiects. There are about I2 subiects, but we have them on alternate days. We cannot choose our subiects during the first four years of high school. We have six years of high school after which we can go to the University if we want to follow a career. I have already finished high school and when I go back, I'm thinking of becoming an air line hostess. I will probably have to go to Medical College for three years, as I must have a nurse's title to become an airline hostess and also must know at least four languages I have a twin sister named Elena. She is also an American Field Service student. Here in America, she is staying with a family in Staples, Minnesota and she, like me, is having a wonderful time in the States. When last year, in the month of December, I was told that the American Library was hold- ing an examination to win a scholarship to come to the United States, I thought it was too wonderful to happen to me. Nevertheless, I tried, and three days after, I knew I had passed the examination. However, the hardest part was yet to come. After sending many papers to America, I patiently waited for news from New York. When at the end of April, I was noti- fied byphone from Madrid that I was chosen to come to Kiel, Wisconsin, my happiness had no limit. The days that followed until my departure were the busiest of my life. I realized then how complicated it is to arrange a passport and get everything readyl On the third of August we left Barcelona. We went to Paris and to Rotterdam, Holland where the Arosa Sky was waiting to take us to the United States. There were about eight hun- dred students from 25 different countries on the boat and we had a great time. I don't think anyone will ever forget the eight days voyage we had. There were dances every night. We learned some American songs, played all kinds of sports, saw movies and had conferences about what would be our new life in America. On the I3th of August at 5 o'clock in the morning, we landed in New York where we spent the day. We were all very thrilled on our first day in the United States. That evening I took the bus which brought me to my American home. Since I arrived here I have had a great time. I enioy my new life in the Feile home very much, as they are such a nice family. I have had many new experiences .... even milking a cowl I have participated in and enjoyed the student life at school. As almost everyone feels who comes to this country, I hope to come back again some day. I also hope that Kiel will continue to have foreign students from the American Field Service as they have had in past years because of the wonderful year of experience and enjoyment given to the teen-agers of other countries.
