Ra hel Gregory Harpenden Herts England Amerucan Fueld Servuce lnternatuonal Scholarshup OUR FIRST VISITING STUDENT One day last sprung the foreugn students who were spendung the year un Manutowoc came to our assembly and talked to us about theur natuve countrues Soon afterwards ut was suggested we could have a foreugn student at Kuel Hugh School for the comung year uf we could put forth the effort A druve was made to provude the flnancual means forthe program and arrangements were made by the Kuwanus Club and the Amerucan Fueld Servuce to brung a student from Europe to Kuel Funally ut was known we would have a student from England When we returned to school un September we were told that Rachel Gregory would be our student from England Everyone was anxuous to meet and to knofv her MY YEAR AT KI On July 2nd I954 I receuved an Important letter whuch sand that I had won an American Fueld Service lnternatuonal Scholarshup Thus entutled me to come to the Unuted States to attend hugh school for one year After school was out at the end of July I began to make preparatuons to come to Kuel I had to make several trups to London to get my vusa and other papers and buy some clothes Eventually I sauled from London on August 23rd on the Arosa Kulm wuth 20 other Englush students The crossung was very enuoyable and as ut was a student shup varuous types of recreatuon were provuded Eleven days later we sughted the Statue of Luberty and a few hours after that we docked at Hoboken New Jersey At the dock we boarded a bus and drove under the Hudson to New York We stayed the nught un a large hotel and the tlrst evenung we went up the Empure State buuldung to Tumes Square and we walked down Broadway The next day we explored New York and vusuted the Unuted Natuons buuldung Early on Sunday mornung about twelve of us boarded a Greyhound bus for Chucago At Chucago we all separated and I travelled alone for the rest of my lourney I arruved un Kuel un the afternoon on Monday September 5th and school started the very next day The flrst bug dufference I notuced between mv EL It has been a pleasure to have Rachel wuth us thus year Those of us who came to know her ard were un her classes especually know what a fruendly and cheerful person she us When Rachel was absent from class to speak to another group or organuzatuon her absence was readuly notuced Her ready res oonse to any questuon asked by the teacher and her luvely uokes and comments to her fellow classmates made her a welcome fruend Even though our type of athletucs were new to her she was a fauthful support er of our team at all games and pep rallues Her co operatuon un every respect along wuth her fruendluness and cheerfulness made her a valuable addutuon to our student body HIGH SCHOOL school un England and Kuel Hugh School was the boys' In England I go to an all gurls school and I found ut rather duuoferent to go to classes wuth boys In contrast to the varuety of brughtly colored clothes worn by the students here students un England wear a school unuform our wunter unuform consusts of a navy blue skurt a pale blue taulored bous and a royal blue and gold struped tue un summer we wear a pale blue dress wuth whute collar and cuffs No Iupstuck or lewelry us permutted The school year un England us duvuded unto three terms and the final term ends at the end of July Our vacatuon us duvuded so that we have three weeks at Chrustmas three weeks at Easter and sux weeks un the summer I have enuoyed all the actuvutues at Kuel Hugh School especually watchung football and basketball games I became a member of the GA A F T A and the Lubraruans Club The clumax of my wonderful year came when Mr Zuelanus permutted me to take part un the Graduatuon exercuses and all the senuor Commencement actuvutues I greatly apprecuated the fruendluness and courtesy whuch all the Faculty and giuynts extended to me whuch helped to make thus legit a happy one for me Thank you very much for makung ut possuble for m to share your school year wuth yo.J Page Twenty C 1 1 . . . . Standmg S Brocker L Meyer P Lubeley J Kubale J Wuse S at d S Frels J Spnndler Mr Znelanus D Henschel 8 R Steffen H Nett A Shumaker Mattes W Ziegler STUDENT COUNCIL Durlng the second week of September when classes were well organuzed the members of the thu teen tlrst perlod classes and study hall elected a representatlve from thenr respec uve groups for the Student Councll On September T4 the fourteen representatives met to organize and Mr Zlelanls presided The following officers were elected Kay Melselwltz President DeLyle Henschel Vlce Pres: dent and Barbara Mattes Secretary Treasurer The Councnl met every Tuesday alternatung perlods so members missed each class only once every seven weeks The representatuves reported the transactuons of the Council to their class groups and asked members of thelr group for suggestlons for each meetlng Thus organnzatron takes charge of a number of school events durlng the year The Hornecomlng parade and choosing the ludges for th floats were under the supervlslon of the Student Coun ul Then came the Junlor Red Cross Drlve which netted S26 69 through the co operatuon of the entlre student body Followmg thus prolect came Save the Chlldrens Clothmg Druve An appeal was made to the students to bring clothrng In good condltlon to be gxven to needy children There was a splendid response from the entrre student body Nuneteen bags of clothung were collected from grade and hlqh school students and were packed by the Councrl members to be transported to drstant places Free transportatuon was provuded through the good wlll of motor transoorta tnon companles During the weeks prevuous to the holnday season a lighted arch was erected In the second floor hall way and bulletln boards were decorated wxth Fr boughs and red bows by a commlttee of Councul members Each representative sold Christmas s als an has respectuve classrooms The program for Parents Night was planned by the Council who sent out unvltatlons to all the parents of the varslty basket ball team and decorated a sectnon of the bleachers for them Two members acted as hostesses for the evenung and before the game began Mr Zxelanus Introduced the players and their parents to the aud :ence Members of the Council took turns lntroduclng the elght assembly programs throughout the year There were several outstanding programs this year and one of these groups was the Ambassador Ma e Quartet Thus group presented a program of modern classlcal and sprrltual numbers with the help of theur famous Swnss Bell rendntuon Another flne pro gram was that of the vanlshlng art of glass blowing demonstrated by Charles Mapel He made a be ut: ful pitcher and vase from plaln glass tublnq and also made spun glass from a solid glass rod durung the program Bob McElroy a ventnloqulst and balloon artlst presented a program of comedy and laughs The dog made from the balloons and the Easter bonnet for Marylee Bahr were most attractnve Kenneth Knler Curtls Meyer and Joe Meyer made fine characters for has Amos and Andy skit Once each week the Student Councll represertta trves collected conns ln theur class room for th Foreugn Student fund Supplementlng these weekly collectuons the Student Council has soonsored two movues durrng the noon hour and a dance after basketball game Proceeds from these events made addntlonal money for the fund Page Thirty ,Z N , ' A, I pp, .
