THE KIDD TRADITIGN Q DDG-993, is the second ship to bear the name of WWII hero RADM Isaac C. Kidd Sr. The first. DD-661, was com- missioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in April 1943. DD-661 soon began to live up to the KIDD tradition as she constantly went into danger in order to win. On one mission, she risked her own survival as she closed to within 2000 yards off the enemy coast to rescue a downed aviator. Her exploits in the Pacific Theater earned her six Battle Stars and numerous other awards. DDG-993 began her career as a vessel built for the Iranian Navy. Subsequent to the political power struggle in Iran, DDG-993 was destined for the U.S. Navy. Commissioned June 27, 1981, she began a distinguished career that contin- ues to today. n L ii . 158 ' 5 K,
