SHIP S NAIVIESAKE FIADIVI ISAAC C KIDD SR DDG 993 is named for Rear Admiral Isaac Campbell Kidd gi Senior who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor RADM Kidd was a native of Cleveland Ohio where he was born on 26 March 1884 He entered the U S Naval Academy in 1902 from which he graduated as a Passed Midshipman on 12 February 1906 Passed Midshipman Kidd first served on USS COLUMBIA which participated in the round the world cruise of the White Fleet On 17 May 1907 he reported to USS NEW JERSEY where he completed his two years at sea then required before commissioning and was commissioned Ensign USN Hetrans Ierred on 2 May 1910 to USS NORTH DAKOTA where he served until June 1913 He then joined USS PITTSBURGH on 1913 nd durin the Mexican trouble of 1914 1916 served as First Lieutenant Following this tour he served as 30 June a g Aide and Flag Secretary on the staff of Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet in the flagship PITTSBURGH and SAN DIEGO ff h th U ted He returned to the Naval Academy in August 1916 and was serving as an instructor on the Academic Sta w en e ni States entered World War I In 1918 he loined USS NEW MEXICO serving on that battleship until July 1919 during her fitting out and service in World War I His next tours were as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander in Chief Atlantic Fleet and in 1921 as Aide n Charge of Buildings and Grounds for the Superintendent of the Naval Academy CDR Kidd then served as Executive d h first command on USS VEGA Officer on USS UTAH from May 1925 until November 1926 He thereupon assume is which he held until June 1927 There followed a long period of shore duty irs a p Jntil April 1932 as Chief of Staff to Commander Fleet Base Force For three years he was in charge of the Officer Detail Section of the Bureau of Navigation in Washington D C He returned to sea duty from 25 February 1935 to 7 June 1936 as Commander Destroyer Squadron ONE Scouting Force He then completed the Senior and Advanced Courses at the Nlaval War College in Newport Rhode Island remaining there to serve on the staff for several months In September 1938 CAPT Kidd assumed command of the battleship ARIZONA serving until February 1940. He was then designated Commander Battleship Division ONE and Chief of Staff and Aide to Commander Battleships Battle Force ' i ' ' ' k d P IH bor with the accompanying rank of Rear Admiral. RADM Kidd was serving in that billet when the Japanese attac e ear ar on 7 December 1941. In the attack RADM Kidd became the first flag officer to lose his life in World War ll and the first in the U.S. Navy to meet death in action against any foreign country. He was killed when the USS ARIZONA his Flagship blew up from magazine explosions and a direct bomb hit on the bridge In addition to the Medal of Honor RADM Kidd was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. f t s Ca tain of the Port at Cristobal Canal Zone then from June 1930
