Riley chool Board n .125 John A. Lammert f':r?: ' President Russell K. Montgomery Maurice R. McDonnell Walter D. McClellan ' Since July, 1966, the Keystone Gaks School Board has consisted of nine members, with each of the three boroughs in the dis- trict electing three. This year 's major tasks have involved continued coordination of the programs of the formerly separate districts and planning for an addition to one of the elementary schools and the construction of the new senior high school. The work on the new buildings has necessitated many extra meetings with financial advisors, architects, county and state educators, and contractors. The board members' more routine duties include work on the six standing committees: Property and Supplies, Finance, Athletic and Activities, Education, Transportation, and Policy and Legislation. Their regular meetings, generally scheduled for the second Monday of every month, are opened to the public. These conscientious men certainly deserve a vote of confidence and a big thank you for their dedicated and time-consuming service. They are ably assisted by Secretary Eleanor McDonnell and Solicitor Herbert Brownlee. Superintendent I' l 1 1 L L e 4 5 Q Dr. JAMES S. ACKELSON JR. Keystone Oaks extends its welcome to one of its newest members, Dr. Ackelson, who joined the district July, 1966, as super- intendent. The former superintendent of Avalon Borough, he obtained his bachelor's degree from Edinboro State College and his masters and doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh. As the executive officer of the school district, it is Dr. Ackelson's duty to see that the legislative policies of the School Board are carried out. Being in closer con- tact with students and faculty, he also makes many recommendations to the Board. His greatest problem in the last year has been to create uniformity among the three old districts. He is looking forward to future adventures in developing the potentialities of the school system with the assets of the new high school and the possibility of comput- erized courses. Administrators fl 1 ,21.,f5 ',f , iii 1 Y if DEVERE R. CARLSON RUTH MAHAFFEY PHILIP L. EVANS ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH Aiding Dr. Ackelson in his mammoth task and directly responsible to him are his six competent assistants. Mr. Carlson, Assistant Superintendent, works in closest contact to Dr. Ackelson. Miss Mahaffey is particularly concerned with the certification, records, and insurance of personnel, office supplies, per- mits for the use of facilities, and is a notary public. Mr. Evans' duties include curriculum research and public relations. Personnel re- cruitment and selection, special education, AND PLANNING and counseling programs are Mr. Hardin's domain. Mrs. Roth heads work involving curriculum development, teaching aids, and special subjects. Finally, Mr. McRoberts is in charge of getting bids and purchasing equipment, computing budget information, and planning transportation services. All of these hard working people can be found in the new administrative offices located in the Lebanon Shops, which is shown in the administration divider. I.. They are helped in their work by stu- dent assistants. Faced with one of the world's toughest jobs, that of principal, is Mr. Michael Babyak. It is up to him to see that the school is running smoothly as he acts as a liason between his capable fac- ulty and over a ,thousand stu- dents, each with own particular needs and problems. Mr. Babyak is called upon to preside at many functions and to address various assemblies throughout the year. He also bears the great responsi- bility of recommending students for college admission and job appointments. In a pinch, Mr. Babyak can even be found sub- stituting for an ailing teacher. LETHA DENT, AND MISS ERMA MILLS Vice Principal Keystone Oaks, Annapolis Avenue, extends a fond farewell and best wishes to its former Vice Principal Mr. William Spence who left at midyear to assume new duties as principal of K.O.'s .freshmen, presently housed at the Myrtle Avenue School. He is rightfully par- ticularly proud of the year of unification when the students led by Student Council and its sponsor Mr. Spence helped to select a new school name, seal, mascot, and flag. Keystone Oaks students remember his understanding and interest in them and his friendly smile, and realize that their loss is the freshmen's gain. wg-nur-f , . This year's Eagle squad began ,their 1966 season with perhaps the toughest H G Q schedule in the W.P.I.A.L. competition. The Eagles rebounded with a victory over Upper ' 5,9 V, ' St. Clair, before losing to Montour, a team which has lost only one game since -ffm 'A ' ' ' 1961. Victories over Moon and Brentwood brought the team to a .500 mark. The ' ' final game of the season with Mt. Lebanon, Class AA champs, and perhaps the best squad in Western Pennsylvania, was a tough one for Coach Earl Ceh. Even Earl Ceh Mr. though we lost, many people were surprised at the performance of the Eagles, who were predicted to be crushed by the powerful Blue Devils. This years Eagle squad was characterized by many trademarks. Among the most important were fine spirit and desire to win. Dlscounting AA opponents, the team came through 66 with a fine 3-3 record. Keystone Oaks end, Rick Lammert, and halfback, John Lee, were honored to make Class A All-Star team. This Keystone Squad went to Shadyside and brought home a second place victory for our school. The team, as in every sport this year, had to change into Mr. David Ludwig higher competition. This competition, along with the lack of ex- Jim Marucci perience, was a factor in the record of this year 's wrestling team. The squad began its first year of play under their new coach, Mr. James Sims. Innovations were apparent from the be- ginning of the year with the Oakers coach stressing a hustling James B. sims Defensive style of play. The 6 and 14 record which the hoopsters Rick tallied was in no way indicative of their desire and courage.
