Class History Time: 8:15 A.M. A sweltering August 29, 1954 Destination: Assembly 34 scared freshmen marched into the prison doors. They were ordered to sit in the front cells where they could be watched. The rules were laid down and filed properly in C-29 fwaste basketj. Wardens for the year were assigned. The wardens assigned to us were Mrfl-laynes and Mrs. Harlan. The party machine took control for the year, they were Larry Pickering: Boss, Gail Hoyt: Assistant Boss, Carol Severin and Kathleen Ulcha Bookies, Darlys Junge: Stool Pigeon qSqueelerJ. We were sentenced to four years at hard labor. Objective? ............. Escape with signed diploma Uniforms were issued for the year. Girls attire consisted of gunny sacks and shorts. Boys were dressed in diapers. There was a slight riot and the next day all inmates returned in the garb which they would wear for the remainder of their sentence: Blue Jeans and skirts. On several occassions the wardens allowed us parties to celebrate our good behavior. On one rare oc- casion we presented two one -act plays to the fellow inmates. During our first year of detention two in- mates were transferred to solitary confinement at another school because of bad behavior. They were Betty Burr and James Pedigo. After a summer parole we were back breaking rocks. This year our chain gang consisted of Larry Pick- ering: Bib Link and his assistants, Dennis Havran, Rosemary Selken, Shirley Eichmeyer, and Kathleen Ulch. We were required to join the ranks of the Declamation division of our cell block. We competed against other institutions of our district. This year our warden was Miss Wimmer. One of the assistants was Mrs. Stodola who assigned us to the state farm to pick up corn. This year Bonnie Hilton escaped over the wall Summer came and we were again paroled. Fall came and we were herded into the prison for another year. Our chain gang was broken up and we were issued separate links to wear on our fingers as a permanent means of identification. They called them class rings. This year our cell block presented another play to which our friends and relatives were invited. Chief trouble-maker Dennis I-Iavran starred in this money making scheme. This year our warden was Mr. Drinkwater QWHO SPIKED THE PUNCH?J Our leaders in conspiracy consisted of Dean the chief spy, Dennis Havran: his chief assistant, Bonnie Selkz Decoder, Shirley Eichmeyer: fake treasury agent, and Sandra Bockholt: propagandist. We threw a gala extravaganza for our departing inmates. The theme, one of the outside under-world, was a night club CLUB 57. We were allowed another warden parole, our last. By this time we were all hardened criminals. In the fall we returned to the class for our last stay. We held an initiation for the new inmates. After this year initiation was abolished. We had our mug shots taken for the permanent record of inmates. Voted most likely to succeed in the outside world were Robert McCormick, Dennis Havran, DeLores Cohrt, Darlys lunge, and Carol Severin. We were granted a reprieve for one weekend. We took advantage of this opportunity and went to the gangster capital of Chicago. We invited our friends and relatives to our final celebration. GRADUATION! A The end of our sentence and opening of the wide door to the outside world. 53
