F Class History F RESHMAN YEAR In September 1955 a gay group of freshmen, not being a bit shy, came roaring into Keyport High School ready to get into the swing. It didnit take us long to become a real part of the school clubs and follies. Football, basketball, band, twirlers and cheerleaders were only a few of the school activities in which we became interested. Robert Sulli- van got us off to a good start by being chosen our representative to the Student Council. VVe were determined to make our class outstanding in social and academic functions during our four years at Keyport High School. SOPHOMORE YEAR Returning the following year as sophomores, we began to take part in many more of the extra-curricular activities. WVith many of our boys on the football team, we finally accomplished our goal-we beat Matawan! This was the year that we were undefeated and won the Shore Confer- ence Championship in Group B. Sophomore representatives were added to the Student Council. Two sophomore members, Harriet Wolfe and judy Brown, were elected to the National Honor Society. IUNIOR YEAR A This year we were nearing the peak of our high school career. We formally organized our class and elected officers. For President we chose 'john MacLean, Vice President, Harriet Wolfe, Secretary, Clementine Mon- tagna, and Treasurer, Mary Luccarelli. These officers were ably assisted by our class advisers, Miss Reilly and Mr. Fiedler. Candy was busily being sold by all the juniors to help pay for all Washington Trip expenses and class dues. Our two dances, Star Dusty and Mardi Crasf, and the arrival of our class rings were the highlights of our junior year. Fifteen more juniors were elected to the National Honor Society and were introduced at the Spring Concert. SENIOR YEAR At last! Seniors! We were off on the most exciting year of our high school career. The school was operating under a staggered session with the seniors astaggering inn at about 7:30 a.m. We showed our enthusiasm and leadership by heading many committees in school. Our class advisers, Mr. Fiedler and Miss Reilly, again aided us in the organization of our class. Our officers were Robert Sullivan, President, jay Phillips, Vice President, Carol Ullmeyer, Secretary, and Mary Luc- carelli, Treasurer. These executives represented a class of 162 seniors. Many exciting events took place this year. VVe started with our two dances, Corn Cob Rocki' and Silver Wonderlandf' In january the student body selected Vernon Stultz and Carol Ullmayer as Campus King and Queen. They were crowned at the annual Open House ceremony on April IO, which was held for our family and friends. Then came our senior trip to Washington on March ll, 12, and 13. The Hotel Raleigh, the Capitol Building, Mount Vernon, and all our en- joyable times there will hold a special place in our memories. Next came the Spring Concert which was a success as always. We all eagerly an- ticipated the final social event of our four years at Keyport High School --the junior-Senior Dinner Dance. It was an eventful evening with fun and excitement for all. Then came graduation! Receiving our diplomas made us feel both proud and sad. The gay whirl of the last few weeks had come to an end and as we sang our Alma Mater for the last time, we realized how much our four years at Keyport High School had really meant to us. fm WASHINGTON TRIP Early Wednesday morning, March 11, three touring buses were hur- riedly filled with ninety-six excited seniors and seven vigilant chaperones, who were Frank Woods, head chaperone, Miss Ethel Reilly and Wilbur Fiedler, class advisers, and Mrs. Vera Carlson, Charles DiFazio, Thomas Cuinane and Mrs. Kathryn Nolan. Happily bound for our nation,s capital, our first thrill of the day occurred when the third bus, soon nicknamed the Red Raftv, dropped behind the other two for repairs while its passengers had their breakfast break at the nearby Howard johnson Restaurant. On to Washingtonlv was the cry as the bus come to a halt atop the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Upon rejoining the others in Delaware, those aboard the Red Raftv rode with the first two buses for the rest of the trip to Washington. Everyone ate heartily at Scholl's Cafeteria, upon arrival, and it was there we ate throughout most of the trip. A cheer went up as the seniors welcomed back the third bus and all could enjoy a comfortable tour of the capital. Our first visits were to see the Supreme Court Building and the Capitol. Afterwards, as we were all watching the abirdiev, the traditional senior picture was taken on the Mall. As a fine mist began to fall, we went scurrying towards the awaiting buses and headed for a brief hour,s rest at the Hotel Raleigh and to become settled in our rooms. We were served dinner in the colonial atmosphere of the Old Club in Alexandria, Virginiag we passed the Pentagon and many of the buildings we were to visit during our stay en route. Entertainment supplied for the evening was a choice of either Cinerama, South Sea Holiday or Up Periscope and the Hanging Tree. The shrill ring of the telephone and that cheery Rise and Shinev at six in the morning' will long be remembered. First on our list for today was the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. fHave you ever cleaned your eyeglasses with a twenty dollar bill?j With a large charge about half of us started the climb to the top of the 555-foot tall Washington Monument, while the others had the pleasure of walking down. There was a lovely View of the surrounding city between the snow flurriesl QWe wonder if the tune of Old MacDonaldv will forever echo in the stair well?j At the FBI Building, we quickly learned that crime does not paylv We saw displays of famous crimes, an example of their expert marksman- ship with various guns, and a look at a laboratory in action. With a wish for color film, we viewed the beautiful flowers of the Botanical Gardens and back in the junglev we heard the cameras click- ing again. As the afternoon drew near, we saw the impressive statue of the Iwo lima flag raising and when we visited the Arlington National Cemetery, we were just in time to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Next, at the George Washington estate in Mt. Vernon, Virginia, we took a brisk walk to View the home and its surrounding buildings on the bank of the Potomac River. After dinner at the Old Club, we saw the awe inspiring Lincoln Memorial and the historical Library of Congress. At the Washington Airport, with the wind blowing for all its might, a few of us went outside to see planes landing and taking off. After breakfast at the hotel, our last day was spent by visiting the Iefferson Memorial, Smithsonian Institute, National Gallery of Art and National Archives in the morning. Then we packed for the trip home after a good lunch at Scholl's. Goodbye Washingtonlv Homeward bound-we stopped at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and there saw the tomb of John Paul Jones. Dinner was en- joyed at Howard Iohnsonis. At the end of the long ride home, ninety-six tired seniors and our seven tireless chaperones made their way safely home.
