Keyes High Qclsoolfeaclwuts The annual staff issued a questionnaire to the high school teachers. Everyone of them came up with fantastic answers, but the lack of space forced us to edit some of their answers. Thank you, teachers, for your cooperation. Here are their responses: Mrs. Rhotons My philosophy of education is, if you can get a student to use his! her God given ability to think, you can teach himfher anything. Coach Davis: My goal in teaching is to better prepare a student for life, to give him knowledge enough to further his education, and, most of all, give him love and respect which is greatly needed. Mr. Stark: According to the dictionary there are many definitions of philosophy. The two that perhaps fit yeur inquiry are I0 and ll: 'A basic theory: a viewpoint and the system of values by which one lives'. I feel that science helps one understand his environment, himself, and others. It also has contributed greatly to our present standard of living. I feel it is important to have a basic understanding of science. I also feel that science, in its various forms. offers opportunity for individual taste, development, and challenge. Mrs. Elms: My philosophy is to help young people achieve a goal, improve so they will be accepted by the larger part of society, teach them to have a desire to improve their status, be happy, be a good citizen, and individual enough to have initiative in helping those around as well as self. Mr. Cliyford: In order to teach, I think you must have the attention of the class. To gain their attention, you must be able to maintain constant communication. Mrs. Overton: To try to help every student I have to become better prepared to live a productive life. Mr. Hanes: To make the subject I teach interesting enough that the students will leam it. Mr. Rhoton: My philosophy is to get the students' attention, and your chances of teaching him something will be greater. Mrs. Stark: I try to consider the whole individual and help him become the person he should and can be. Mr. Elms: My philosophy is not necessarily to teach a student perfection, but to instill a lasting interest, and working knowledge, and appreciation of music. Coach Whitehead: In order to teach. I think you must have the attention of the class. To gain their attention, you must be able to maintain discipline and gain their respect. A good teacher must have a good relationship with the students and maintain constant communications. When the teachers were asked what they look for in a good student, they replied: fd Mr. Cljfordr Spanish Oklahoma History, and Grade Principal Mr. Elms: Band, Music, Sponsor of Eighth Grade Mr. Hanes: Math, To me a good student is not necessarily one who can make the best C0001 Davis-' Sponsor of Juniors grades, but one who makes the best grades he can. Willingness to work, and to leam, honesty, a desire, good attitude, being able to do the best they can with what they have got, initiative good use of time, gets along with others. not too critical, well-groomed dependability, attentiveness, cooperation, leadership, sensitivity, enthusiasm, respect, neatness, one who will try, curiosity, self-motiva- tion. 9 7 Pirate. . .8 Athletics, Social Studies, Sponsor of Seventh Grade Mrs. Elms: Home Economics, Sponsor of Senior Class Mrs. Overton: English, Business, Sponsor of Sophomore Class

J: but do we really know the people behind the faces of those ahomework-hungry monsters at the front of the room? The annual staff decided to expose the personalities of these teachers to the stu- dent body to prove our faculty is. in fact. human. Did you know, for instance: 'Ihat 17927 of our teachers attended college out of state, and 70'Zp of the other 83921 attended Panhandle State University? That 752 do not have a degree beyond a Bachelors but the remain- ing 25'Zp have a Masters? Of those not having a masters, a good part of them have hours beyond their Bachelors? That 75 Zp grew up in Oklahoma and 5676 of those in Cimarron County? That our teachers have a total of I66 years of teaching experience among them, and l0l of these years passed right here in good ole Keyes High? That we have one Grade A faculty here at KHS? We would like to take this opportunity to thank them! fA ceremony seldom enacted by the student body.J Wl1atGwesYowwGfwabQenwohA ' '? Mr. Stark: Doing something right. fl feel like a failure most of the timej Coach Davis: To see one of my students successful in life. Mrs. Elms: When I see that at least one student is motivated to do something constructive, then I feel I have accomplished something. Mr. Shafer: Seeing a student learn and use the information taught. Mr. Clwbrds To find that my students have become successful in whatever area they choose. Coach Whitehead: To see a student finally realize a goal for which he or she has been striving. Mrs. Overlon: Watching students leam to do new things. Mr. Hanes: To see that I have taught a student something. Mr. Rhoton: Being able to help a student when he comes and asks for help, gives me the greatest feeling of accomplishment. Mrs. Stark: Seeing a student improve. Why DtzLYow Become afTeaclww'? Mrs. Stark: I always wanted to be one: even in grade school, I love school and learning. Mr. Rhoton: Good question!!! Coach Whitehead: I enjoy being around school age students, I also enjoy social studies and coaching, and feel this is a good opportunity to be able to do both. Besides, I like the nine-month work year. Mrs. Elms: I had examples set before meg most relatives and respected friends were teachers. Mr. Clwords To help others accomplish their goals. Mrs. Rhoton: When I was taking my first business course in high school in Califomia, I had a great business teacher. She made such an impression on me tha-t I said that I would like some day, to teach students as much as she had taught meg and, in that way, pay her back for her dedication. I am sure that the fact that my mother was a school teacher influenced my decision in being a teacher also. Mr. Hanes, Mrs. Overton, and Coach Davis all became teachers because they like working with young people. Pirate . . . 9
