Although they are small, we could not survive without them. The 1979 Pirate was put together this year not only by the annual staff, but also with help from the photography class. After all, a yearbook would not be very good without pictures. I would like to express my appreciation to the mem- bers ofthe annual staff for their help and also to the stu- dent body for their cooperation. Co-Editor , 5 if 1 N . There are two groups that the majority of us take for granted the most: those who per- form small but important jobs, and those who take care of us with the larger, more complicated jobs. Our School Board falls into the latter cate- gory. These people slave over such issues as bussing, heating, hiring good teachers, and providing us with the fantastic facilities we enjoy. They do a superb job of molding the tax payers' money into a grade A school. Thank you, Board Members, for taking so much time and effort to pro- vide the best for us. We are living in a world which moves so rapidly that we seldom take time to slow down and enjoy the beauty of things around us. Take, for example, the sun. How often do you take time to enjoy the beautiful sunrise and sunset in the Panhandle? We are often quick to criticize the weather but never take time to say, Thank you Lord for the beautiful sunset. I am afraid that we are in such a state of frenzy of the time that we cannot appreciate the great life we have. Everyone of them came up with fantastic answers, but the lack of space forced us to edit some of their answers. Thank you, teachers, for your cooperation. Here are their responses: Mrs. Rhotons My philosophy of education is, if you can get a student to use his! her God given ability to think, you can teach himfher anything. Coach Davis: My goal in teaching is to better prepare a student for life, to give him knowledge enough to further his education, and, most of all, give him love and respect which is greatly needed. Mr. Stark: According to the dictionary there are many definitions of philosophy. The two that perhaps fit yeur inquiry are I0 and ll: 'A basic theory: a viewpoint and the system of values by which one lives'. I feel that science helps one understand his environment, himself, and others. It also has contributed greatly to our present standard of living. I feel it is important to have a basic understanding of science. I also feel that science, in its various forms. offers opportunity for individual taste, development, and challenge. Mrs. Elms: My philosophy is to help young people achieve a goal, improve so they will be accepted by the larger part of society, teach them to have a desire to improve their status, be happy, be a good citizen, and individual enough to have initiative in helping those around as well as self. Mr. Cliyford: In order to teach, I think you must have the attention of the class. To gain their attention, you must be able to maintain constant communication. Mrs. Overton: To try to help every student I have to become better prepared to live a productive life. Mr. Hanes: To make the subject I teach interesting enough that the students will leam it. Mr. Rhoton: My philosophy is to get the students' attention, and your chances of teaching him something will be greater. Mrs. Stark: I try to consider the whole individual and help him become the person he should and can be. Mr. Elms: My philosophy is not necessarily to teach a student perfection, but to instill a lasting interest, and working knowledge, and appreciation of music. Coach Whitehead: In order to teach. I think you must have the attention of the class. To gain their attention, you must be able to maintain discipline and gain their respect. A good teacher must have a good relationship with the students and maintain constant communications. When the teachers were asked what they look for in a good student, they replied: fd Mr. Cljfordr Spanish Oklahoma History, and Grade Principal Mr. Elms: Band, Music, Sponsor of Eighth Grade Mr. Hanes: Math, To me a good student is not necessarily one who can make the best C0001 Davis-' Sponsor of Juniors grades, but one who makes the best grades he can. Willingness to work, and to leam, honesty, a desire, good attitude, being able to do the best they can with what they have got, initiative good use of time, gets along with others. not too critical, well-groomed dependability, attentiveness, cooperation, leadership, sensitivity, enthusiasm, respect, neatness, one who will try, curiosity, self-motiva- tion. 9 7 Pirate. . .8 Athletics, Social Studies, Sponsor of Seventh Grade Mrs. Elms: Home Economics, Sponsor of Senior Class Mrs. Overton: English, Business, Sponsor of Sophomore Class Mr. Rhoton: English, Driver's Ed., Math Sponsor of 4-H, and Sophomore Class Mr. Shafer: Shop Sponsor of BB's and Freshman Class Mr. Stark: Science, Sponsor of Senior Class Mrs. Rhoton: Business, Sponsor of BB's, Junior Class, and Annual Mrs. Stark: English, Library, Sponsor of 4- H, Eighth Grade, and Drama Club Coach Whitehead: Athletics, Social Studies A student spends an average of 180 days. 1260 hours, or 75,600 min- utes a year with their teachers Knot counting extra curricular activities, of course! The annual staff decided to expose the personalities of these teachers to the stu- dent body to prove our faculty is. in fact. human. That 752 do not have a degree beyond a Bachelors but the remain- ing 25'Zp have a Masters? Of those not having a masters, a good part of them have hours beyond their Bachelors? That 75 Zp grew up in Oklahoma and 5676 of those in Cimarron County? That our teachers have a total of I66 years of teaching experience among them, and l0l of these years passed right here in good ole Keyes High? That we have one Grade A faculty here at KHS? Mr. Shafer: Seeing a student learn and use the information taught. Mr. Clwbrds To find that my students have become successful in whatever area they choose. Coach Whitehead: To see a student finally realize a goal for which he or she has been striving. Mrs. Overlon: Watching students leam to do new things. Mr. Hanes: To see that I have taught a student something. Mr. Rhoton: Being able to help a student when he comes and asks for help, gives me the greatest feeling of accomplishment. Mrs. Stark: Seeing a student improve. Why DtzLYow Become afTeaclww'? Mrs. Stark: I always wanted to be one: even in grade school, I love school and learning. Mr. Rhoton: Good question!!! Coach Whitehead: I enjoy being around school age students, I also enjoy social studies and coaching, and feel this is a good opportunity to be able to do both. Besides, I like the nine-month work year. Mrs. Elms: I had examples set before meg most relatives and respected friends were teachers. Mr. Clwords To help others accomplish their goals. Mrs. Rhoton: When I was taking my first business course in high school in Califomia, I had a great business teacher. She made such an impression on me tha-t I said that I would like some day, to teach students as much as she had taught meg and, in that way, pay her back for her dedication. I am sure that the fact that my mother was a school teacher influenced my decision in being a teacher also. Mr. Hanes, Mrs. Overton, and Coach Davis all became teachers because they like working with young people. Throughout the year, both displayed their dedication and loyalty -again and again, but their ability in the field of music did not start in this great yeair of '79, their talents have been in the developing stages since gradetschool. Tisa Adams,ta,so.phomore, has been in the Keyes Band for six years. While ini 'i,it he band, she has occupied first chair. She has also taken, voice lessons for two years. Though herizmusic ability is a great asset to the KHS Band, her enthusi- asm in music engulfs all the members of the band. She reveals this when she says, I Love Music! Wesley Sain, a Senior, has also been in band for siztyears, four of which were in the KHS Band. Hisftalents are hidden in such instruments as Bb Clarinet, Bass Clarinetii'Sax, Barry Sax, Piano, Organ, guitar, and drums. He was the drum major for the marching band this year. There is hardly any traffic in town, but the lights from the Keyes gym are blazing brightly. Inside, the stands are filled with fans, and one can feel the excitement in the air as they anxiously await the outcome of the homecoming activities. Out of eight hopeful candidates Q2 from each classj one boy and one girl receives the high honour of becoming homecoming King and Queen. Just to be nominated is an honour in itself. As the candidates are announced, a great cheer arises. King Bron Gardner now crowns Queen Billye Cochran with the traditional flowers, tiara, and kiss. The Pirate has progressed much this year. and they are looking forward with great expectations to next year. ET Pirate. . .58 ign- Q.-4 ,,.o- .. Betty is quite disturbed about his manners and decides to rehearse Elmer on how he is to act. The rehearsal works perfectly. but when the young people arrive, Elmer becomes excited and his antics are screamingly funny. Well into the party they decide to play a game called Murder. This requires turning out the lights. When the lights are flashed on again. Mr. Bixby is found unconscious on the floor, and a necklace has been stolen, Practically everyone in the group is suspicious of the other. Finally, Elmer, assisted by Beevy, solves the mystery to the surprise of everyone. Betty realizes that Elmer is the boy for her. I'm going to miss old KHS for a million different reasons . . . I remember what it was like to be new around here . . . the place seemed a little stranger then and though I never admitted it. a whole lot scarier! For a while, I wondered how I was ever going to fit into this strange, super- sophisticated world . . . but now I wonder what I was so worried about . . . the confidence came . . . and so did the fun. Most of all, there were the good friends I made here . . . and all the together times we shared. I remember times when we won together. and times when we lost . . . times when we worried together, and times when we cele- brated . . . but how do you ever say thanks for a mind full of beautiful memories? Looking back Ilm amazed that so many crazy and colorful things could have happened in just these few years . . . but I'm glad they all happened to me! It won't be easy saying good-bye to this school . . . to these friends . . . but I have so much more to learn about the world and about myself . . . and it's time to get started. I only know that wherever I go, what- ever I do. the days spent right here will always be a really spe- cial part of my life - a time to remember as it happened. Valedictory address - Billye Cochran.
