West Virginia University ommercia The commercial department of the Key West High School is geared to meet the needs of the community. Most of our commercial curriculum graduates remain in town, therefore, we concentrate on preparing them for work in local offices. Every commercial major must take bookkeeping, two years of typing, two years of shorthand, business English, and business mathematics. In order to obtain a credit in typ- ing, a student must reach the speed of 50 w.p.m. in the second year, and a speed of 100 w.p.m. in the second year of shorthand in order to receive the shorthand credit. In addition to the needed team sport to help students in developing a consciousness in group responsibilities and achievement, many individual sports such as gymnastics and archery are being emphasized in the program. These are not only fun, but help students in gaining ualities of poise and confidence which are important in the personal traits of mature and successful people. Co-ed classes in archery, social dance, square dance, and recreational activities for older students point out the social values of sports. KI-KI CAPPONY B. S. Hanover College MARTHA RAINER B. S. Pavalko. enior-5 The Senior Class schedule was a hectic one this year. After class elections, in which lack Katz was elected president, Danny Garcia Vice-president, Peggy Haynes treasurer, and Sherry Parrish as secretary, the Seniors held two money making projects in order to secure sufficient funds for their activities at the close of the year. Their first fund-raising project was the pres- entation of the comedy, Best Foot F orwardf on Oct. 27th 6: 28th and the second one was P ge Forty-Two the selling of Christmas cards. With the coming of May, their schedule be- came tighter. There was Conch Day, the an- nual excursion to Bahia Honda for a day of frolicking fun in the sun, graduation reher- sals, and, of course, the All Night Affair. In leaving behind our beloved Alma Mater, we the class of ,59 wish to express our deep- est gratitude and appreciation to our sponsors for making this our last year, a mast memor- able and worthy one. This worthwhile project gave the students a deeper insight into their city government and helped make them better citizens. The girls held court proceedings, wrote out parking tickets, had a city commissioners' meet- ing and did every other item that arises in city government. Julie Wallace, the Police Chief, and her patrol- men, Ida Pierce and Orchid Hernandez, arrested lawbreakers while jane Gomez, the City Iudge, tried and fined them. Fire Chief Nancy Iamardo, Captain Linda Curry, Lieutenant Toby Stickney, and fire fight- ers Brenda Adams, Sandra McLean, and Patsy Roberts put out all fires occurring in the city. Personnel Director Ledia Anti, and Recreation- al Director Esther Yarnall were holding discus- sions with our Finance Director Karen Best and Purchasing Agent N oelia Alvarez about the plans for the city in the coming year. Peggy Hynes, Building Inspector, was pro- claiming several buildings unsafe while Dianne Higgs, City Manager made sure all city matters were running smoothly according to rules set by City Commissioners Barbara Gaines and Christy Pinder. This educational, as well as entertaining, day was under the sponsorship of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Key West. enzor Superfafcued Please wrlte m your cholce for the followmg superlatlve categorles BOY GIRL BEST LOOKING MOST COURTFOUS gl-g,,,.:'a,ezL,,,,,,,, ,64.w-44, dam MOST SCHOOI SPIRIT BEST SENSE OF HUNIOR MOST INTELLIGENT NIOST ATHLETIC BEST ALL AROUND HARDEST YVORKBRS S 5 . . Page Eighty-Four A MESSAGE FROM COACH ALLEN The 1958 season furnished plenty of interest and excitement for our school. Some of the best games were: South Broward, North Miami, Miami Senior, and Southwest. I feel that this year's team was one of the best in our school l1istory. Some of the outstanding players were: Capt. Sam Hollancl, Boog Powell, lack Katz, Lorenzo Bancells, George Mira, Calvin Harris, Wayne Owen, Bob Daley, and Ronnie Young. Due to injuries, two of our most promising players, Danny Garcia and Charles Stephan, were unable to participate in this seasonis games. The Junior Varsity Football team is designed to offer the opportunity of playing football to as many under- classmen as possible. This also leads into the traditional purpose of junior Varsity Competition. This year's team record, from a won-lost standpoint, could have been better, but the competitive spirit of this group was very good. J. 'M GAQQFLGJQFJ The J. V. Cheerleaders were found- ed about four years ago. In order to become a J. V. Cheerleader a girl must maintain a average in all subjects, be able to do a jump, cheer, and cartwheel. This organization was established in 1957, and it endeavors to meet the dual need of class government and service organization for the eighth grade. Purposes of the council are to establish higher and better ideals of conduct, to encourage student participation in all school activities, to create and foster a spirit of under- standing between students and faculty, and to establish and promote a spirit of co-operation between students of this grade and students of the higher grades. During the week, these young men learned the ways in which all government from state to city level work. Each citizen of Boys' State was a member of either the National- ist or Federalist parties. These parties were the backbone of the elections and politics. The government was on three levels: city. county, and state. On each level officials were elected and appointed.
