'bump While Key West High School is growing in size, it must of necessity play a larger part in the life of the community. Sheer size, however, means little. With this growth in bulk must come growth in responsibilities, growth in quality of courses offered and growth in awareness of what is needed in order to make this a finer community. Let each student, in his own way, accept the challenge, and know that goals are only reached little by little, and step by step. Beauti- ful as Key West High School may be today, it will mean nothing unless we strive to ad- vance ourselves educationally. ep--4 , Margaret Wellons ' . ., -ax, ' 1 'bf If.- --.-...-.-.,..-....,...... Physical Education BOYS' PHYSICAL EDUCATION In setting up the program of Physical Education the instructors consider that Physical Ed. is education through the physical and not iust of the physical. They believe that Physical Education is a vital and integral part of Educational Curriculum. They also consider the student's needs both individually and collectively and re-evaluate the program in the light of these needs in the hopes of attaining not only their obiective but to fulfill those of the students. GIRLS' PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical Education is important in developing within an individual the coordination of mental alertness and physical response, healthy habits in everyday life, an understanding of cooperative and competitive living, and an appreciation of the importance of recreational activities throughout life. The girls have a variety ot activities planned in their classwork both in the area of team sports and the area of individual activities. Custodians, we salute you for a job well done. Arriving early, and leaving late, they keep our school a spot of beauty. Their wide variety of work includes the cleaning of classrooms, halls, and restrooms. They keep our windows shiny and our campus tidy. To the rescue they appear to saw off locks, or assist door opening, when keys are forgotten. Each cus- todian is assigned to a building for whose upkeep he is responsible. To these men we again say, Thank You! Cafeteria A wide selection of palatable but inexpensive food is served in the cafeteria five days a week. Special dinners are served, at moderate prices, on holidays. At least two choices of hot meals are available each day, plus an assortment of sandwiches. Due to the size of the student body, lunch is served in two shifts- Our cafeteria is so immense and pleasant that it doubles as a ballroom for school dances. AL. These elected representatives must have a C aver- age and citizenship in good standing. The proiects of the Student Council are two- fold. The community proiects are the Commun- ity Chest, Polio, Library Drives, and others. The services to the school include: printing of the student handbook at the beginning of every year, stocking, managing and maintaining a student supply store, scheduling all elections, Homecoming Queen, etc., scheduling of all con- cessions at sports events throughout the school year, being in charge of assembly programs, decorating the stage in the auditorium for all special events, forming a list of clubs and dates to sponsor dances, issues all activity cards to individual students, takes the lead in money making drives in school, sets up a system of monitors, sponsors an inter-club council, con- tracts for and organizes all paid assemblies which provide us with excellent talent, and ar- ranges tor and makes reservations on busses for all away football games. One award is made each year by the Stu- dent Council to the outstanding worker for the year. Campbell, and the Student Council President. The students, who are monitors, were selected by the class sponsors of the eleventh and twelfth grades. For the first time in the school year, l957-58, the Eighth Grade Student Council served as monitors. These students were chosen on the basis of schol- arship, leadership, and character. They were identified by grey and red arm bands with the eighth grade wearing red and the others grey. The responsibility of the monitors was to keep violations of school regulations to a minimum. The sophomore class of 1958 had its usual varied program of class activity. Regular meetings were held for the purpose of organizing and putting into proper operation the things which were hoped to be accomplished. Under the able direction of our sponsor, Miss Barbara Everitt, these things were readily accomplished. Such things as candy sales, and a class play were planned for the purpose of raising monies for the support of our proiects. Plans for class fun were made and all entered into them with great enthusiasm. I X I I Coach Allen talks to Managers. ,ff The i957 football season opened with a new picture, the changing of formations, and the new look of the T formation from the Single Wing. The boys took to the change quite rapid- ly under a new coaching staff. They worked very hard, and after getting a few games of experience, started to move well. The 1957 season ended with a 500 average, having won five games and lost five. However, this does not give a true picture of the sea- son as a whole. The defensive team of the Conchs was steady all season, but the offen- sive unit did not getmoving until later in the season. Outstanding games for this year were the Miami Beach, South Broward, Curley, and the South Dade games. With the interest in football rising, and the return of the entire Conch line, bigger things are expected from the football team next sea- son. They didn't realize at the time that the boys were playing together for the first time, nor did they foresee that the Conchs were des- tined to improve with each game. The Conchs battled their way into the Class A Dist- trict 8 Tourney Finals by beating Stuart 68-42 and Lake Worth 56-49, but once in the finals they were unable to cope with Pompano's height and speed. This found the Conchs on the short end of a 72-46 score. This defeat marked the end of the '57-'58 season Key West .... .... 3 2 South Dade .... .... 5 I Key West ....,. .... 5 6 Ft. I Her Honor the Mayor Kathy Carman. iw! City Government at work. Taking over the city offices for a day, is one of the highlights in the senior year for many of the girls. This effort is under the sponsorship of the Business and Professional Women. The girls were welcomed with all the fanfare which could be provided by the city fathers. This worthwhile proiect always gives the students a deeper insight to their city government, and will help in making many of them better citizens. Our appreciation is expressed to the Business and Professional Women's Club for their ef- forts in this important matter. Thousands of lights and thousands of voices! On December l9, 1957 Key West High presented to the community its fourth annual Christmas Pageant. This pro- gram was presented through the efforts of the dramatics department, the art department, the maintenance crew, the Chorus, the band, and the 8th grade voice choir. Members of the community, who were present, con- tributed well in that they entered whole heartedly into the carol singing, and listened reverently and attentively to the program. Here's hoping that there will be many more Christmases similiar to this. Our Clv 1-IA tmaw Wt To Il The Conchettes contribute.
